Opening of Ibe Wood Tulp Works nl JHanaynnk, and Speeches by the Wood Pulpers. The staid city ot Manayunk was la-it Thurnday mirprifled by au inroad of litcr-raU from tho principal cities of ttio Union. They had all come to see a Mill, and It being a paper mill, instead ot a real ono, saved the visitors from 'arrest by our vipilant police. Alter the "pulpers" were taken through the "settling pond," the "liine-kilns," the "wood-chopping twtablishmcnt," and the "drying-rooms," they were thought in a fit stale to bring back to the city, when they were taken to tho Continental Hotel in a famishing condition, where they were led and drunk in the usnal manner, The following bill of fare ww prepared by the host of the Continental tn honor of the ccanion : WOOD PULP DINNKR. Hie Honor, Mayor McUicuael, was served up at the head of tho table. After the cloth was removed, which the -waiters aid as soon as they saw how unsteadily the glasses of colored liquid were passed across it, the "pulpers" began to make speeches. Pulp Jones was called upon for a speech, lie spoke of the paper making business in this country as rapidly on the increase; he had made little paper once that got into an Alderman's hands in Roxborough, and It cost him $7560 to get it out ; it was valuable to him on account f having his autograph on it, and he was anxious to keep these things in the family. Tulp Jenckes, the President of this Poplar Company, made a few remarks. He said that the Pulp Company endeavored to meet a want long felt by all classes. Poplar trees are neither use ful for shade nor beautiful to the eye, and any inventor that would make one into a newspaper, even a New York Herald, could not be called a small thing. He must here be understood as referring to the invention not to the Herald. Paper had long held its head up like a poplar tree, and had been very dear in some cases, as the preceding speaker had Just given an instance, and the object of the Company was to fell the trees and full in the price of paper, which he had no Aoubt would follow, and now men can learn from trees, particularly poplar trees. (Great cheering.) He claimed no particular merit in the discovery of the poplar, or In locating the woi& in the beautiful city of Manayunk, except as poplar trees were there abundant and books scarce, it seemed natural to harmonize the wants wMch nature had de signed. (Cheers.) Pulp Jenckes was here oftwed a piece of Toast, called "The Press of New York," by our .Mayor, which was accepted by Pun Tilton, of the New York Independent. This pulp, it would seem, is in a yet very pulpy state. He began his appropriate flow by saying that he thanked God he did not live in New York; he lived in Brookl1'",-) hat particular cause there was for than yXss for that fact we don't see, unless that, Je car-drivers in New York are on a strike, Una no cars are now running, this pulp was glad ho did not have to walk to his home after landing at the battery; but could go over to Brooklyn in a Ferry-boat for three cents. He Temarkod that he had been in Washington for some time past; but he had seen more log rolling In the Manayunk Pulp Works than he had during his whole Btay in Washington. As soon as this ioko was fairly comprehended by the pulpers, they wanted to engage this pulp to write a funny column for their papers, all seeming to be of an opinion that It was as good as anything seen In the Supper Table Series. He continued, and said he held in his hand a piece of paper made of wood, and he was happy to say that the day had come when if we had no Popular Government we had poplar newspapers. (Great cheering, dnring which oilers were renewed, asking the pulpito state his price.) This piece of paper, made at the Pulp Works, he believed was strong enough Jor all practical purposes, The Indf pendent was not made of wood, but lt editors were (immense cheering) much plenned to see the progress made towards cheap ening literature, and he believed the time was coming when thnl paper would be furnished to ail of Its subscriber for $2"50 a year in advance. This pulp cloed his remarks amid rapturous applaus The herins Kditor of the S-upper Table having Veen discovered drawing a cork by the Mayor, v. as callrd upon by that worthy to exhibit to the pulps a specimen of his drawing, which he did by taking t wo more bottles and repeating the orcrntlon, Hftcr which he mnde the follow ing sketches iu chalk on the buck of one of the sleeping pulp: RKKTCII I.
