What Martha's Vineyabd Produces, A New
fBedtord (Mass.) paper reports that the steamer

Prize Money. The law reauiring the deduc
tion of bounty paid to personi transferred
from the army to the navy lrom all prize

pealed by Congress, and a large number of
'claims which have accumulated In the office
of the Fourth Auditor will now be taken up
and paid as last as possible.
Pay of Seamen. A month's sea pay Is allowed
to every officer in the navy, by a law which has
ust passed congress, lor clothing lost during
he war in 1861. Applications may be made to
the Fourth Auditor, enclosing affidavits that
such clothing was not lost oy the negligence or
fault of the claimant. A schedule of the articles
lost is required.
Direct Taxes from the South. The following
is a statement ot the amount of direct tax paid
by Southern States under tne act ot August 6,

Apolition of Slavery. At the last session of
the French Committee lor the emancipation of
the necroe?, two addresses were read, one to the
Queen ol Spain, and the other to the Emperor of
Urazil. These addrese9, which ask lor the
abolition of slavery in the Spanish colonies and
the Brazilian Empire, are signed by MM. Guizot,
Uroglie, Montalembert, Falloux, Henri Martin,
Laboulaye, and others.
Jcbt to Fbiodten II im. Anpgro was shot last
Sunday morning in front of the Macon (Ga.)
jail, while standing there conversing with some
prisoueis. An individual named Tom Knight
lold aim to move on; and upon his refusing,
Knight fired his pistol, the ball striking his
victim In the neck and wounding him danger
ously. Knight says Ue Intended only to frighten
the man.
Sickness in Texas. The Austin Intelligence
oi the 2'2d says that upwards ot seven hundred
cases of measles and other diseases are reported
in Austin and vicinity, and the epidemic is now
decreasing only for want of material. Of this
extraordinary number of cases a large per
centage has terminated fatally. At laht ac
counts it was rumored that the scarlet lever was
in the city.
Myb teriocb Disease. The New Albany (In
diana) Ledger of Tuesday says: "A diseane
something like hog cholera is proving very
iatal to the hogs in this citv. They are dying
in larf:? numbers, and the Street Commissioner
informs us that this morning there Wrre no less
than one hundred lying dead in a radius of flvo
or six wjuares, all of them having died aluce

White Blood Pbedomimatrs. Tho accredited
correspondent oi the JVafon, who so graphically
delineates "The Bouts aft It Is," tells us in his
thirty-fourth letter that In Mississippi the
seventy teachers in the colored schools are re
quired to report monthly to tho Freedmen's
Bureau, specifying among other things the num
ber oi pupils ol mixed blood. In the twelve
schools which happened to stand at the head of
the list there are returned 287 children ot pure
Alrloan blood, and 777 of mixed blood.
Fossils. Interesting remains of the Pllosaurus
have quite recently been added to the collection
ol the Brilhih Museum, and will be described in
the forthcoming volume of the Pala-ontographi-cal
Society's Memoirs, by Professor Owen. The
remains consmt of a nearly perfect skull, with
the lower Jaw of the same animal, which are
but slightly distorted from their normal form.
The skull measures nearly five feet in length.
The rami of the lower Jaw are each upwards of"
nve feet long, from the pivot on which they
work to the lront point, v. here they unite.
St. Peter's Eighteenth Centenary at Rome.
The year 1H67 is tixed as the centenary year of
St. Peter's martyrdom. The anniversary is to
be observed at Rome with great pomp, and
other celebrations are to be adderl, to make the
year memorable, and the city highly attractive,
both to the religious of the Catholic faith and to
the curious ol other creeds. A grand Oecumeni
cal Council is to be held, a canonization of
several saints, and other demonstrations of the
kind. The idea oi the centenary originated,
it is said, with the Pope, who was much im
pressed by the meeting last year to celebrate
the centenary of Dante. Hence be adopted and
applied it to another and a higher subject.
