Cannon and Cannon Halls.
We find an allusion to camion as early as tho
SnanlBh chronicle of Alfonso VI, written by
Pedro, Bishops of Leon. In describing a sea
fight in the eleventh century, between the Emirs
ot Seville and Tunis, he says: '"The vessel of
the King of Tunis had on board a number of
iron pipes, out of which volumes of thundering
lire (tonmos de fuego) were discharged." The
first cannon cast in Enalund are said to have
been made by John Owen,in 1621; but the art
appears to have been Introduced in a hi?h stale
ol perfection. Two largo brass guns, recovered
in 1835, from the Mary Rose, which was sunk at
ttpitnerid in io4& one a bs-poundcr and the
other a 24-poundcr in beauty of design and
workmanship are equal to anything produced
in t fie present nay. The largest gun ever made
in England, up to 1843, was one weighing
eighteen tons, cast in that year lor Mehcmet
An, Pacha ot Egypt. J. ho do re ot the gun was
about within one-tenth of an inch of sixteen
inches (15 9-10 inches). The wciirht of its solid
tVirtt u-ao Aff nnnnHo ami tfa almll lfifi nnnnla
This gun was twelve feet long, and had an im
mense quantity ot metal at the breech.
A story is told of a cannon in Belnpoor. India,
which weighs lorty tons. A scat in the interior
accommodates live persons, without much
crowding. It is formed of mixed metal, of
winch there is said to b some portions ot gold
and a considerable quantity of silver, and 1s
very sonorous. It was tho work of Chuteby
Coomv Khnn, an officer in the service of Iloos
seim Nizam Shah, at Ahmudnugger. In giving
a description ot it, colonel yises says; "Un
the visit of Sir John Malcolm during a period ot
his Viceroyship at Bombay, the Sattorah Rajah,
w ho holds the surrounding territories under the
British Government, directed that this gun
should be fired off as an appropriate salute.
Though not charged with more than half the
weight of powder which its chamber could con
tain, the concussion was awful; it shook many
of the buildings to their foundations, and the
terrified inhabitants, as the reverberations rolled
alone, expected to see tho domes and towers,
survivors ot the former shocks, come tumbling
auoui tneir ears."
At the siege of Antwerp, in 1830. General
Paixhans, ot the French Artillery, proposed to
King Leopold to shorten the siege by means of
a mortar, the shells ol which would, weigh a
thousand pounds, and contain each one hundred
pounds ot powder. The proposal was thought
to be inhuman, and it was not until after fifty
thousand cannon balls and shells had been
soent in a vain bombardment that the monster
mortar a charcoal casting made at Liege was
brought out. JNine shells were tired, huge nytng
masses, one of which burst in the air, and eight
descended into the citadel. Two days alter the
first shell was fired the Dutch surrendered.
The artillery used at the siege of Baza in the
war of Granada, during the siege of Ferdinaud
and Isabella, were called bombards. They are
still to be seen in that city, where they long
served as columns in the public maiket place.
The largest fare of about twelve feet in length,
consisting of iron bars two inches in breadth,
held together by bolts and rintjs of the same
metal. These were firmly attached to their car
riages, incapable of either vertical or horizontal
movement. The balls thrown from these en
gines were sometimes of iron, but more usually
of marble. Several hundred of the latter have
been nicked un on the hills around Baza, many
of which are lourteen inches in diameter, and
weigh 17S pounds. At the siege ot Balagner, at
the beginning of the fifteenth century, according
to Zurila, stone balls were discovered which
welched not less than 650 pounds. A sun reco
vered troin one of the Turkish ships destroyed
at Tohesme in 1770 was fourteen leet two inches
in lencth, nine feet in circumference, twenty
inches bore, and 210 cwt., or 23,526 lbs. weight.
The hrst instance ot horizontal shell firing on
record is that at the siege of Gibraltar, in 1779,
where Captain Mercier, of the 3iith Regiment,
suggested that five and a halt inch shells, with,
short-calculated fuses, should be - fired from
euns. This practice answered so well that it
became general, lted-hot balls were erst used
hv Stephen Bathor. Kinor of Poland, at the s'tece
of Dantzig, 1576.
Pistols were first used by the Germans; Bellav
mentions them in the jear 1544. In tho time of
Francis I and under Henry II the German horse
men, dea reiters, were called pisiohera. Army

The Retiring Pennsylvania Senators.
With the close of the present session of ths
Legislature the terms ol eleven Senators will
expire, as iollows:
1. Jeremiah Nichols, Union, of Philadelphia.
6. Wilmer Worthineton, Union ol Chester.
10. II. B. Boardslee, Democrat, of Wayne.
16. D. B. Mootfcomerv Uein of .Northumberland.
16. David Fleming, Union, of Dauphin.
17. Benjamin Ciiauipneys, Union, of Lancaster,
J. M. Dunlap, Union, of Lancaster
20. w. V. Householder, Union, of Bedford.
24. John Latta, Democrat, of Westmoreland.
?6. William Hopkins, Demoorat, of Washington.
28. Thomas Hoge, Union, of Venango.
Seven of the outgoing Senators are Republi
cans; lour are Copperheads. Fourteen Republi
cans and eight Copperheads . hold over. It is
not likely that any change will occur in tho
districts to fill these vacancies; .at least it is
not supposable thut any but seven Republi
cans will be elected to till the seats just mado
vacant by the retiring Republican Senators.
while there is every reason to believe that a
Republican Senator will be elected from the
Thirty-sixth District. In this district, the
t-ubstitution ol Beaver for Greene county (tho
old having been Washington and Greene, the
new district now is Beaver and Washington
counties), cive9 tho Union men a hand
some majority, and will enable our friends to
elect a eood man. For the retiring Senators,
wo cannot retrain from expressing a very high
admiration, alike for the iuithful manner in
which they discharged their public duty and the
unvaried courtesy with which they managed
their official intercourse with those having buai
ness in tho Legislature. The renomination and
re-election f the most of tho Republican Sena
tors would not only be a benefit to their re
spective constituents, but a credit to tho people
of the Commonwealth at largo. llarrisourg
