Daring Feat. The Montreal Gazelle describes
a very daring leat of one of the Grand Trunk
engine drivers. Mr. T. Laughland, driver of
.Engine Mo. 73, was comini? down the line on
the 28t h ult., with No. 7 freight train, when on
cross ne round the curve, two miles west of
Cornwall, he saw a drunken man sleeoinr on
the truck. He immediately whistled down the
brakes, which the conductor and brakesman
applied as quickly as possible; but the distance
was so short, that it whs impossible to pull up
in tin e. Laughland immediately ran out on
the cow-ca'cher, and a9 the locomutive came
up he stooped lorwaid and seized the man by
the neck, and endeavored to pull him on to the
cow-catcher, but being unable to do so, jumped
off with the man, and succeeded in tlirowing
him clear of the train. The whole train of
seventeen cars passed the place belore it could
be stopped. On learning the facts the authori
ties ordered that tiro days' vay should be handed
oner to Laughland as a slight reioard for his
gallant conduct.
The British Soldieb, The Pall Ma't Gazelle
sa.istbe intellectual condition of the British
army appears to be of a much higher order than
is commonly supposed, thouh it still falls tar
short of what might not unreasonably be con
feidered attainable. According to returns jut
published, it is lound that 03Hi7 per cent, of the
men are able both to read and write, and 6-80
per cent, are of a superior education. Of the
remaining 2!ff2 per cent., IC'66 can read but not
write, and 12 07 can neither read nor write.
1207 per cent, of soldiers, therefore, are unable
either to read or wri;e.
