THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PnHADELPITIA, MONDAY, APRIL 9, 18GG.
I All THE FAMILY CAT.
Tcbii folrl up my claws
In my soft velvet pw,
And purr in the gun,
Till the short da? 18 done
For 1 urn the limllv cat.
I can doze by the hour
In the vine-covered bower,
. , --Winking and blinking
t ' - Through stinnhlnc and shower
For 1 am the lam ily cat.
From the toosoberrv bush,
Or where bright currants blush,
t I may suddenly spring
For a bird on the wing,
Or dart up a treo,
If a browu nest I see,
And select a choice morsel
For dinner or tea,
And no one to blame me,
Berate me or shame me
For I am the lamily cat.
In the cold winter nlpht,
Wfcrn the ground is all white,
And tho Icmles shine
In a long silver line,
I stay not to shiver,
In the moonbenms'palo quiver,
Hut curl up in the houso
As snug as a mouse,
And plsy Jacfcy Horner
In tho coziest corner,
' Breaking nobody's laws,
With my cbin on my paws,
Asleep with one eye, and awake with the other,
For pats (rom the children, kind woids lrom tho
mother,
For I am the family cat.

Colt's New Pistol Factory at Hartford.
The Hartford Time savs the expense of driving
the piles for the inundation ot the new Colt's
Pistol Factory (on the site of the burnt editice)
will, with the cost of the timber for piling, ex
ceed $GO,OuO. The new edifice is to have a Iront
of live hundred teet, all of beautiful "pressed
brick," with stone caps aud facings; and the
total cost of the new building must be about a
quarter of a million. ' It will be the most com
plete establishment of the kind In tho world;
and it will contain an Immense and very per
fect system of varied and most ingenious ma
chinery. The Impendino German Conflict. A German
caricaturist lbs well hit off the probable entire
and inevitable effect ot the deep quarrel which
has arisen between Austria and Prussia in regard
to the appropriation of the duchies wrested from
unfortunate Denmark. The scene represents a
Roman circus. Napoleon III occupies the im
perial seat, while a I'russian aud an Austrian
soldier, in gladiatorial costume, are entering the
arena, and salutine him with the ancient for
mula: "A ne, Ca-sar Im vera tor, morituri tn salu
lantt" "Hail, GVsar, Emperor! We, who are
about to die, salute you !" They fight, ai.d de
stroy one another for the Emperor's pleasure.
Negroes Voting in Wisconsin at Last. At
the Charter election at Milwaukee on Tuesday,
the iegulanDemocratic ticket, with one or two
exceptions, was elected. J. J. Talmadge, who
is considered a JohDson Republican, was re
elected. There was no Republican ticket run.
This being the first opportunity given the colored
people to vote since the Supreme Court declared
them voters, some precaution was taken to pre
vent any disturbance, but no ono seemed dis
posed to question their right, and their votes
were peaceably deposited side by side with the
white man's. There was not as many at the
polls as there would have been with a'Republl
can ticket.
Canadian Gallantry and Inspiration. Pa
triotism naturally inspires poetry, and the ele
vated sentiments" of a grand national struggle
spontaneously utter themselves in lofty verse.
It Is not surprising that our neighbors over the
border should feel the kindling impulse. A
Canadiau paper brings us an ode to "Our Volun
teers," the concluding stanza of which we copy,
to show how hiuh the enthusiasm rose during
the late peril:
Brave Darlinptonlans, should you go
W here bloody battles rage,
Mar Heaven gnard too while yon strive
Ihn strugg e to assuage;
And strike amongst the Fenian hordes
llli victory does appear,
, And we'll cry hurrah for Canada
And nor gallant volunteers.
Raffling for a Pf.v. The Pall Mall Gazette
savs: "An Enclish provincial lournal. a tew
davs since,' contained an advertisement of a
new' in some local church 'to be rattled for' by
so many members. This is surely a sign of
the spread ot American Ideas, ana one more
proof of the popularity of transatlantic cus
toms In this country." We do not believe the
Pall Mail Gazette ever heard of an instance In
this country of "rsffliuir for a pew" in a church.
We have, like other countries, some customs
that we arc not proud of, but we do not admit
this as one of tbem. We have also many
'iien' of a different sort, which we nave no
hesitation in recommending to our brethren
across the water, as calculated to supersede
some usages c 1 theirs quite as undesirable as
"raffling lor a pew.'
THIS FHSLXIAlXfel,
Meeting of the Senate To-Day.
Tho Senate or tho Fenian Brotherhood will
meet In this cily on Monday next, for the pur
pose of making the proper arrangements to
carry out the plan of the campaign laid out by
General Sweeney. It will probably be the last
session ot this tody for some time, previous to
hostilities. . The last call on the ciroles has been
issued by the Fenian authorities, and President
Roberts has pledged his word that the earnest
men in hi organization shall not be deceived
or deluded by false promises. JV. Y. Express of

Voimgn and Saying nt the Fenian Head,

From ihe JSeu) York Tribune.
The embryo Fenian bud appears to be slowly ex
panding under the genial influence of tnose sott
April showers and warm sunshine, so that probably
the early summer mil bring the lull bloom and loug
expected fruit. The Union Sou are authorities re.
Jorled lavorably yestcidav on their future prospects.
Urdly even for an instant do they doubt their
ability to cope with the loroo ot Kngland, army,
navy, police, volunteers and all. The sailing of tho
expedition, already announcod in the Iribuntt, Is
continued, and they evidence no desire to add or re
tract the statement a rend? published.
It is declared, however, that the announcement of
Bermuda as the destination is intended as a blind,
which t lie Canadians aipeurto thoroughly under
stand, if an opinion may be formed from the alarm
created in that quarter which scores ot telegrams
and nicseai rs to I onian dignitaries announce to ex
