I have concluded to ami you a momoranda ol that
and its accompanying events. 1 accompanied tho
expedition into Xennessoo, made tor tbe purpose of
driving back General Uillem's bngado of Fedoral
cavalry. Wo arrived at Ureenvillo tarly in the
evening of the 8d September, J8K1. Greenville la
distant Irom Bull's Gap (General Gllieru't position),
mnitoen mi.os. Ibe General established his lioau
quarter at the houso ot a Mrs. Williams, in the
town ot Greenville.
His own brigade was tent on the road loading- to
Bodpersvillo, to a point three miles trom Greenwich,
lor the purpose ot getting lorae, and a detachment
of Tennessee cavalry, nix lnuiOrod strong, was
ordered under Colune Brad lord, to enoamD on the
road leading to Bull's Gap, and to picket the road
leading toward the cnomy. 1 his lores was not in
creased because larger number of horses could not
be foraged in that direction. The country between
Greenville and the Gap is hilly and wild and very
poor. Goueral Uillem stated afterward that be re
ceived Information of the status of affairs about

At Knoxvillo the staff officers were locked up in
iron cages, in a jail, whose windows bad neither
glass nor sash. They had neither change of olo!h
1 ing, nor overcoat, nor blankets. These bad all been
taken Irom them. 1 hey were permitted to go into

We found at Knoxvillo several officers and men of
Morgan's command, who had been taken two weeks
before us. Thoy told us that the soldiers who cap
tured them said that they bad orders not to take

Alter this it was rumored that the soldiers of
General Morgan's command refused to take as pri
soners ot war men belonging to tuo win Tonnessee
Cavalry. General utiicm sent a communication
nnder a flag ot truce to Genoral firockinndge on
this subiect. complaining that some members of tho
13th bad been killed, and stating that be snpposod
