Rtade's works, ilk those of Dickens, are written to

'.Never loo Eato to Mend" was written to sotibel'ore
tne public the abuses ot the prison system in Eng
land, which was disgrace to a nation boasting of
its civilization, its great charitable institutions, and
its wealth.
Tbe book of "Never Too Late to Mend" caused a
groat sensation, di awing the attention of the Gov
ernment to tbe evils and abuses it described, and
ultimately effected great reforms, juit as Eugene
tine's "Mysteres de Paris" swept away whole
streets ignored by the authorities, which were dens
of crime ana misery. This is a noble triumph lor
works or fiction, and the drama can have no higher
purpose than to follow in the same path.
Hence tho great interost and success of Never Too
Late to Aend.. But it was a loool success and a local
interest. Here where the laws ol humanity and
equality are preserved even when a prison exoludes
the criminal lrom sooial llle, the evils and abuses
vortrayed in A'tvtr Woo Lute to Menri lose itielr
point, and It becomes revolting and tedious. iStill,
as a matter of curiosity this play is attractive. It is
well put on the stage, with every resource that tho
scenery allows. Mordauut, who plays tlie priucipal
part, was exceedingly eilect've, portraying tbe reck
lewness of tho flash thief with much spirit, aud after
wards the change to total reform, with much urtiatio

Hiss Orton, in tbe true spirit of art, accepted a
part that was of no great importance, and would
have been insignificant if she had not played it. Mr.
Lewis showed some talent in the eharaoter of the
"Jew," the first glimpse w have seen, Mr. Foster
has not loroe enough lor "George Melding." Miss
Andrews, though correct and evidontly expe
rienced, has no magnetism about her, and is utterly
wanting in pathos.
Walnut Street Theatre Mrs. Bowers' "Oa
PDille" is the only "Camille" we have now on the
etaxe lull of delicacy, teudorue-s, pathos, and pas
siou. Through tho long scenes ot tue last acts Bhe
Interests to the last to tke last the audienoa is in
tent on her every word aud movement. The low,
p ambve strains ot Traviata (played like dream
inuBio by Mark Hasslor) complete admirably the
poetry of this beantitnl artistio doliuoation. This
evening, Mrs. Bowers will give us her fine creation
of ".Lady Audlov." It is tbe finest original concep
tion that has been given in our dramatic world tor
many years, and would even, without any ot her
other achievements, give Mrs. Bowers a diploma of
genius.
Mr. McCollom is entirely free from rant and man
nerism, lie has a fine vuioe, and a handsome and
expressive face. He was received with great tavor by
the audience. Lady Aud Icy will be plaved but once.
All who have seen u, and all who have not seen it,
should remember that this eharaoter is a great com
bination of intelligence, soul, and artistio finish.
Arch Street Theatre The Inconitant; or,
Wine Workt Wondtr$ wih be the porlormance of
this evening. ''Young Mirabul" ia a part that Mr.
Murdoch alone ean play. The scene of the "Red
Burgundy" is electric, and produces on the audieno
s magnet io eflect, carrying ic away into the reality
of tear, ioy, and sorpriso, which he so wonderlulfv
portravs. The play will be put on tho stage with
the elegance which distinguishes tnis theatre, and
will be cast with the elite of the company.
