'attentive hearers. At the Cathedral, lonfc before
the hour announced for the morning services,
thousands of persons had euiered the spacious
edifice, and Dy 10 o'clock pews, aisles, and

Although some inconvenience resulted from the
demand lor seats, the strictest decorum was
observed during the splendid ceremonies. Near
11 o'clock A. M, the Rrand march by Lind
palnter was commenced by the Gcrmanla Or
chestra, and soon the procession entered the
Cathedral from the Episcopal residence, and
took plnc.es within the sanctuary.
The Rieht Reverend Bishop, James Frederick
Wood, was robed in the maenificcnt dress of his
office, with mitre and crozier, and after the
sinking of Havdn's "Te Ileum" bv a fine combi
nation choir, he ascended the altar and began
the celebration of Pontifical Mans, assisted aa
follows: Assistant Priest, Hev. James O'Connor;
Peacon of the Mass, Kcv. Aug. J. klcConoiuy,
Chancellor of the Diocese; r-ub-Ieacon, Mr.
Eaniuel Mattinjrly, Seminar? of St. Charles Dor
xomeo; Deaconp of Honor, lievs. James O'Heilly
and John J. Elcoek. The followiDg seminarians
wereubordinale officers of the Mass: Master of
Ceremonies, Messrs. F. O'Neill and J. McbHroy;
Tburilcr, Mr. J. Mellon; Acolytes, Messrs. I).
Brennan and D. McDurmott; Torch Hearers,
Messrs. O'Brien, Kelly, Reilly, Lawlor, O'Hara,
and Boyle. The choral portion of the services
consisted of Ilummel's Chorus Mass in B flat
with instrumental accompaniment, opening with
the "Kyrie Eleison" in excellent style. Every
part ot the grand chorus was sung with fine
musical effect. The Duo, in Mendelssohn's
"Kong ot Prah-e," was splendidly sung by the
Misses Welsh, at the otrcrtorlura.
The altar presented a rich and brilliant ap
pearance duricg the services, and was decorated
with art and natural beauty. At its rear was
a grove of evergreens, and distributed among
elaborate candelubras were clusters of lilies,
jsponicas, and other rare flowers and twiuincs
ot ivy, myrtle, and laurel. Above were arches
of light, wound with green branches, and in ad
dition to innumerable candles upon the altar,
two bcantitul groups of gas lets were fixed at its
sides. A gorgeons eifect was produced as the
noon-day eun, reflected from the rich-colored
skylights, fell upon the vestments, lights, and
ornaments used within the sanctuary. An elo
quent sermon was preached by the Rev. JVJ.

After the Mass, the Papal Benediction was im
parted by the Right Reverend Bishop, and the
moraine services closed with the overture to
Mebul's Joseph by the orchestra. In the after
noon Pontifical Vespers was sung, and the attend
ance was as large a3 during tne earlier part of
the day.
Easter was also observed in St Augustine's
Church, N. Fourth street, by the celebration ot
a Grand Deacon and Sub-deacon Mass, the cele
brant being the Rev. Father PeroleBi, of the
Sistine Chapel, Rome, and the sub-deacons, the
Rev. Fathers Stanton and Mark Crane. The
main altar was splendidly decorated with na
tural flowers in great profusion, and other appro
priate adornments, and when lighted up with
jnDumsrable wax tapers arranged on it, pre
sented a most beautitul and striking appearance.
The church was densely crowded with worship
pers, many no doubt having been attracted by
ihe announcement that Hummel's Grand Mass
in D would be performed tor the first time ia
Philadelphia on this occasion. The mass was
admirably rendered with the utmost precision
and effect by the choir, which numbered up
wards of forty excellent voices, and included
some ot the best professional and ' amateur
talent in Philadelphia. . The amplest justice was
done to the splendid work, and reflected great
credit on all engaged in iu performance, as well
89 upon Protcssor Thunder, under wliose
auspices it was so creditably produced. II am

sustaining the solo portions in the most credit
able manner. The Rev. Fa'hef Crane delivered
an appropriate and eloquent discourse on the
occasion, and the celebration throughout was
ot a highly Impressive and interesting char
acter. Deaths in Philadelphia. -During the
tast week the whole number of deaths in this
city was 243, of which 17 were persons from the
country.' As usual, consumption of the Junes
carried off the largest number, 47; there were
2'2 deaths of inflammation of the lungs, 8 of in
flammation ot the brain; 76 were under one
year, 14 from 80 to 00, 1 from r!0 to 100, and 1

tract trial for several weeks past, and is now at
the Philadelphia Navy Yard, awaiting the orders
of the Navy Department. The conditions of the
trial are as follows: She is to make a three
days' tea trial, during which the performance of

boilers can burn fourteen thousand pounds of
coal per nonr, ana that her engines will work
eff in an efficient way the steam produced by
this coal. It is expected that the Chattanooga

ing to the Gas Worts, In Seventh street, above
Cheenut, by order of the trustees ia about to be

wines of the building will be extended, and

German Library Company of Philadelphia, by
whom the seoond story is still occupied. The

Charged with Highway Robbkbt.
A person bv the name of Oscar Willis was bo
ore the Recorder ou the charged highway rob
bery. A lew evenines since John McDerraot, of
Norristown, was robbed in the ncighbortiood'of
Ninth and (ireen street". He was about taking
the cars when be was enticed away by a'crowd
and taken to a drinking saloon, and after leaving
that was robbed of a gold watch, worth three
hundred dollars, and forty-seven dollars In money,
and a certificate ol stock. Willis.it is alleged.
committed the theft. The watch was recovered,
and the orwoner committed iu default of $3000
tun to answer.
! The Temperance Refobm. Yesterday
a large and interesting meeting of the friends
Of temperance took place, in the Eleventh
Street Methodist Church, tindor the auspice, of
the Frank ha Division, No. 6, a of T. Brief but
Interesting addresses were made by W. J. Mul
11 n, J. N. Morrison, and Rev. R. J. Carson.
Another temperance meeting, undor the
auspice of the Crystal Fount and Sliver Spring
Divisions, S. of T., was held about the same
time, in the church at Twentieth and Fitzwatcr
streets. Remarks were made on the occasion
by N. M. Tratt, Alexander Sloan, and others.
The meeting was an interesting one, and pro
ductive of much good.
Receiving Stolen Goods. A man named
Levi Bemhelmcr, who, at a previous hearing,
was held for a further examination on Saturday,
24th ultimo, upon the charge of receiving
stolen goods, was held in $2000 bail on Saturday
afternoon to answer at court. The piece of
goods was found in the house of the accused, and
two pieces of other blue cloth which were re
covered at 'a dychoute were tully identified by
George Campbell, of the firm of Campbell k
Pollock, Twenty-first street and Washlntrton
avenue, as their property. Mrs. Bcrnheimer,
who was charged with a similar offense, was
discharged from custody. Hernhelmer claimed
that he knew notning about the illicit purchase.
Running Cabs on Suntjav. The report
which was received trom llarrisburg last week,
by telegraph, to the effect that the Union Pa-
tenjrer Railway had neon made a post-route, and
would, therefore, be authorized to run its curs
on Sunday, appears to be lounded on facti The
officers of the railway have purchased, it Is
stated, a contract lor currying mails across the
city every day of the week, which has been a p-
E roved by the Postmaster-General, and they
ave been authorized to carry the contract into
execution. This gives them the right, however,
to run only at the arrival of the mail trains, and
not at oiner nours.

Companies, who were before the Recorder on
