The Closing qf Lent. The prespnt
week will close the religious season of Lent, t
The Catholic Church celebrates during this
week the pasnion and death ot Christ. ' i
The services at the Cathedral of St. Peter
and Bt. Paul are quite attractive llloly Week
toeiDg observed there in strict accordance with
the Old Roman Ritual. . ,
Towards eveniu? on Wednesday, Holy Thurs
day, and Good Friday, the Catholic Church
performs an impressive ollice called the
lenebrw, -which signifes darkness.' In addition
to the six lights always upon the altar, a trian
gular shaped candlestick, having ftlteen tapers
arranged along two ol its sides, is placed
within the sanctuary for the periormance of (he
ceremony, at the beginning of which all tho
candles are lighted "to signify the Lighte of
Faith preached by Christ and the . Prophets.
The triangular brunch represents the mystery
of the Holy Trinity, a fundamental article ot
, While the Tenebrw is being chanted, fourteen
yellow lights in the three-sided stand are ex
tinguished, one alter each psnlin. and at the

the altar are also put out to signify that the
Hebrews were deprived of the light of taith
when Christ was put to death. The while taper
left burning at the top of tbe triangular stand
Is typical of Christ, the light of the world, and
it la hidden tor a time beneath the altar to
signify that though Christ, according to Ilia
humanity, died and was laid in the sepulchre,
' jet He wa9 always alive, according to Ilia divi
nity, by which He raised Himself again to life.
In the darkness which, pervades thu sanctuary
at this part of the solenuji office, the Miserere,
long celebrated for the errandeur ot its music,
is sung, and alter the recital of a short
prayer, a rumbling noise is made to repre
sent tbe trembling of the earth, the rend
ingiyol tho rocks, the opening of the
ernes, and the tearing of the veil of the Jewish
Temple, which accompanied the Crucifixion of
Christ. To-day the Catholic Church commemo
rates the institution of the Sacrament of the
Eucharist, a subject of Joy and tuauksgivinor,
expressed by the tine music and ringing of belli
during the first parts of tho mass celebrated on
this occasion, and the white color of the vest
ments and ornaments used upon the altar.
After the Gloria in Excelsis, the organ and bells
are silent until tho recurrence of the same hymn
on Holy Saturday, Intended to honor the silence
ot Christ during His passion. At the mass on
this day, the priest coueecrates two Hosts, one
: lor the sacrifice of the day, the other to be car
ried In solemn procession, accompanied by
lights ard turning censors to the repository, a
small altar adorned with Innumerable lights,
the rarest flowers and sweet-scented plants and
most magnificent ornaments, where it is kept in
- ereat splendor tor tbe office of the next dny.
The Host is removed from line main altar that
the devotion in honor of the Passion of Christ,
which was there begun the evening before at
the Tenebra, may be continued without pomp
or magnificence.
Muititudeh visit the repositories on Holy
Thursday, a custom which is commonly culled
viEiung sepulchres, but very improperly aud
contrary to the intention of the Catholic Church,
which, in her Rubric, ordains that the honor
fiven to the Sacred Host shall be expressed by
lght and the richest ornaments, decorations
unbecoming a sepulchre. The oils ned in ad
' ministering the Sacraments of the Catholic
Church me blessed by the Bishops on this day,
during the Masses which they celebrate, and
the ceremony of waahing tho teet, in imitation
of Christ's washing the feet of Ilia Disciples
is also performed., Tho Prelate or Superior at
tends at the appointed place in bis Alh, Stole,
and Cope, of a violet color, accompanied by the
Deacon with the usual service ol inceuso and
lights, and after putting oil' his Cope, takes a
towel and kneeling bareheaded he wusb.es,
wipes and kisses the right toot of those who are
chosen for the ceremony. After the evening
service, on Holy Thursday, the Priest with his
ministers dtve&t the main altar ot it coverings,
to represent ihe stripping ot Christ before the
Crucifixion. The services Rt the Cathedral to
day comnienceat 10J o'clock A. M. The Right

and appearance of a disc of tarnished copper,
with its light so much diminished that it will
seem to be rayles or without scintillation. The
