On baturtlay last the obsequies were performed which consigned to consecrated jrround, not only the oldest Inhabitant ot onr city, but one, In hli way, of the most remarkable men ot the ge Mr. Owen McCue, of West Philadelphia. Mr. Owen McCue, whose name Is hereafter a part of our local history, was born In the county ot Araia.tth, Ireland a county celebrated for the longevity and powers of endurance of iU Inhabitants. At an bk when ordinary men have either departed this life, or r;tlro from worldly pursuits, he emigrated trom his native Boil and landed at the port of Philadelphia. He was then no less than eighty years of age. His occupation in the mother country was that of a grazier and dealer in cattle, lust such a charac ter as Sir Walter Scott describes in his novel of "The Two Drovers,", in bis "Tales of My Land lord," with all the shrewd, "canny," business like manner of that class of pooplo. His In tegrity at,d truthfulness were anionic his moat Erominent characteristics, and amon? tho trade e stood the first in intelligence in his peculiar Tocation, His word was his bon I. At th time of h)s arrival in this cltvthe prin cipal cattle market was located in West Phila delphia, on the old "Lancaster pike," and ho immediately settled in that section of tho city, l'ursumg his business as a drover, he travelled as far South as New Orleans, dealing in Georgia and other Southern States, and driving bis cat tle as far as Philadelphia, and even Now York, for a market. Of course, he soon acquired a competency, although he was a man ot some capital when ho reached our city. He died on Monday evening of last week, at the advanced ago of one hundred and ten years, of no illness whatever, but pure physical ex haustion from old age. lie had only been com plaining of debility for a few days ami the Thursday before his death paid his hist visit tn the Catty Market. He always proteived locomotion. Mr. McCue was five feet tive in in heieht, broad-chested, broad-shouldered, with the phvsical strcneth of a giant. Mr. McCue retained the use of his faculties to the lust moment of his existence, only entering his bed to terminate his existence. Half an hour before the event he was sitlincr up in hia chair. He had a slight attack of debility early in the day, endurin? for a halt an hour, when he laid down. He rallied, however. When dissolution took place, no one was aware of the fact.
