A Family Poisoned,
IEATU OF A YOCNO LADY FIVE 0TUEB PEaONS
rKOSl'ilATE.
A whole family living in Westchester county
were recently poisoned. The particular?, as far
as we have them, are aa follows:
A lew dayh aso, tne family ot Uriah Tomp
kins, a Justice ol the peace of the town of Green
burg, Westchester county, alter partaking of a
meal at their house inTarrytown, became very
ill. with all the symptoms of arsenical poisou.
The tamily cousisted of Mr. Toropklus, his wife,
aud four children. The eldest of these, a daugh
ter of nineteen year of age, has since died; and
the others are in a very eiitical condition. One
or two of them, it is reported, will not be likely
to recover. Their fleh is horribly swollen, and
they are growing worse and weaker.
All the food that remained in the house was
sent to this city lor chemical examination, with
what result is not yet stated.
iso truces of the poison, and no fact3 in regard
to the manner or cause by which U was commu
nicated to the food, could be ascertained at the
house of Mr. Tompkins. Home persons believe
that criminals to whom the Justice had become
obnoxious were prompted to the deed by re
venge; but this is a mere suspicion. The facts
wilf doubtless be explained when the investiga
tions in regard to the icod are complete. JV. Y.
