Altogether, the First National promises to excel every other institution of a similar character in the country in the beauty aud magnificence of its business silucture. It' is the intention of the Directors to maue it a complete banking-house. The whole is being erected uikIt the immediate auspices of Mr. Clark, th President, and will coot, when completed, over $160,000. The con traitor for the work is John nice, Esq., aud the plan was designed by John Mx-Artbur, Jr., whose name as an architect is tecoud to none in the city. We are gratified to observe that quite a large number ot our wealthy corporations are setting a good example to private cithena in expending a portion ol tneir surplus funds in advancing and beautifying our pleasant city. These large lobs give employment cad support to thousands who would otherwise either suffer lroiu want or have to resort to vicious courses as a means of liveliuod. We hope, then, our other public bodies will soon follow the excel lent example set by the First National. A Pleasant Timk at tue Union League liousu. The Union League, of Pmla delphieyenioy the distinguished honor of piecing in the held dun ner the lute Rebellion no less than eieht tiis'-class regime, its. These organi zations have all performed sijnal service, hiving covered themselves with (Ury and retlected infinite credit on that patriotic body of Phila delphia genileraen, the Union League. Tho Union League regiments will bold a conspicu ous place on the page of history. ud their deed ot. valor in the Held, and no less fniiutjl dis charge of duty while iu camp or garrison, will long bo remembered. It ha.i been the intention, tor some time past, ol the Committee of tlie Union League to ex tend to the officers ot these regiments, when tho lust should reach the cii.v, it hearty greeting. Yesterday tho lat ol. the-e regiments, the 214tli, Biigadier-Ceueral D. ii. The ocea-loii was oue ot hearty and mutual congruiulation ut the close ot the Re bellion and the triumph ot the Union army. A Mdtuaid collation was spread in the ban- emetine room oi the Leuguo, and a brilliant iissemblusre of oll'icra a;i.i civilians were pre sent. The proceedings were of a highly iute resting, though ol not a particularly formal char acter. At about 10 o'clock Vn banqueting doors were thrown open, and jjier partaking of the viands abundantly spread belore them, the Ernests were welcomed home bv Mayor Me Michael, in a characteristic speecu. The Mayor alluded to the part that the Union League had taken during the war. aid congratulated them on placing so many regrueuts m the held, com posed ot. brave and stalwart soldiers. The Maor's address was received with the most uproarious apulausv?, und at the close he was ureeted with three heart v cheers. Mr. D o. liberty's remarks were peculiarly appropriate to t'.m occasion, b.'ing au admirable admixture ot w it, humor, aud soul! ment. 'Ihe occasion was Oiie of iuhuite pleasure and satisfaction to all coaeorned, ana was a most appropriate denouement to the part taken by the Union League Keimeuts during tho war Billiard Match roit the Champion fDip. The billiard match for the champion cue of Pennsylvania, which was won, at the ourcamcLt held in this city about two moaths ago, by Mr. E. J. Plunkeit, was contended tor last evening at Concert Hall. OrENIMO DAT. Once more the day brloved by mlU'ners has come, and show-rooms glitter with the beauty devised lor spring toilettes. Never betore within our memory has there been such charratmr variety in the matter 01 hits and bonnets. There is a pertett" garden ot bovlty and loveli lincM to select from, and each separate pet reauty so lair and tresh that every tante is grati fied. Unhappily tho weather is lar Irom being ronltions: and neither the streets nor the shops Bre throfiged to that extent which is genertlly Intost disagreeaoiy noriceaoie upon tuts tho first day ot tho new season. But. notwithstand ing tho cloudy sky, the wet and muddy streets and tho generally uninviting appearance of out door life, within the dulnty little boudoirs, vul garly known as show-rooinH, all is bri&ht, beau tilul aid radiant. A little einsv was the first hat we took tin. It was composed of white chips and tulle, held to- ether tn nanrs ana puns Dy DiacK velvet rin on. The strings ot the finest aud richest quality f broad white ribbon, simply held together with small strings ot black velvet. From the top depended along lall ot while tulle, held in Its rilaee bv a bunch ot delicate pink rones: and a similar'bunch ot flowers caught up tho tulle at the back of the bonnet, producing a very charm ing cfleet. The next uonnet which attracted. our special notice was a Leghorn of very tine quality, being, in shape, a slight modification of he tmpire cornet ot tne season 111st passed. The ditlerence between this variety of Empire and that Just referred to, is in the crown, whioti is gently rounded, instead of being square anil high.' This Leghorn was exquiitoly trimmed with black lace and a hunch ot scartut poppies made of silk. The stringi were of corn-colored ribbon; and the (arc trimminus smaller poppies let in a bltiek tulle ruche. This b3nn?t was extremely rich, elegant, and becoming to almost ny compifcxiou. Another very Deautitui non- net was of plain white and Dunstable straw, tiimmcd with pale violets and crape of the same shade: a long, wide veil of crape was fastened in a bow across the bon net and fell backward in such a way as to form either a Voluminous back trimming to the bonnet, or a veil to M; worn over the face, according as fancy or occasion should dic tate. A gipsy ot pale sky-blue crape, trimmed with tiny jet medallions and cha ns, with a sim ple face'trimmlng of white roses, set in white tulle, and broad b'.ue ribbon strings, was very pretty and curious. The gipsy bat will hardly be very fashionable, lor it demands a face of almost startling beauty, and is imperative as egards the age ot its wearer. Only yonng ana retty women can wear the gipsy to all others must ever remain inaccessible, ana would. indeed, bo extremely ugly. A bonnet of the present modihca Empire shape, made ot white tulle, and simply trimmed with a wreath of myrtle leaves, with the bright, Hashing srrpen berries among, them, was greatly admired by every lady, aud merited the applause called T1 111 S J IL- Dl 111 J I II 11 A 1 lIVllll UV.V I. 7 k' W A V -J upon scores ot equally bcautitul bouuets demand our special praise, out it is mpossioie, at tne present time, to devote more space to them. Shawls, cloaKS, cosaques, sacks, aud mantles In exrraordiuary variety line the rooms and flash brightly in the windows of cloak rooms. It is net possible in one article to do fustice to such important points of the wardrobe as tho bonnet and the cloak, and we reserve until ano'her occasion a fuller description of the novelties in out door dresses. We are permitted to say on high authority that the Marchioness de Gallilet wore, a few evenings ago at the opera, a blue silk dress, with white grenadine muslin over it. xno start was made with a train, and there were no pleats at the waist. The blue silk bodice was low, the muslin one high; a blue moire sash was tied with two 1000s at tlio uacK ot tne waist; round the throat there was a don-collar necklace tied nt the back with three loops, and terminating with two extremely long ends ot rather wide blue ribbon velvet: a locket was suspended from this necklet in front, and in the centre of the locket tncie was a star of pearls; the blue velvet bandlets tn the hair were likewise ornamented wi'h small stars of pearls. Low dresses are now frequently cut neart- shaped, both in the tiont and at the back, and it is now not uncommon to see loue sleeves with low dresses in the Louts XVI style. The Fior d'Aliza Is tho last novelty in low dresses. This bodice is somewhat 111 Louis Alll style, tho cenlre ot it beioff a different color from the rest silk dress, with a low square cut bodice; in front there is a plastron of white silk, divided in the centre by a strip of trreen silk, whilo upon tlio white silk there is an interlacing of black velvet. The sleeves open almost to the top. A pelerine, made either of guipure d'art or guipure Bruges, completes this bodice, which is one ot ihe novel ties ot the stason. A more than usually elegant carriage costume which has come under our notice this week. may be summed up in the following few wor Is: A black velvet dress, whita caslunre shal, and white blonde bonnet, trimmed with .velvet pansies; aud though half a page might be writteu in praise ot tue simpio Deauty aud elegance of this toilette, nothing more could be said, we feel assured, that could more clearly Impress on the minds of our readers tho perfec tion ot so simple a costume. Very ion? trains are worn for lull dress and dinner dress, indeed, with almost every dress that is worn in-doors, and m proportion as tne ioopea-up sisirt seems to grow shorter, the trained skirt becomes lontrer and longer. A dress lor a bride, of whi 0, unwatcred moire, which came from the skilful hngers ot one of our most fashionable dress makers this week, had a train two vards in length, and which, in the absence of pages, must have cost the lair bride a world of anxiety. Kete York Times. The Postmaster-General has ordered an ex tension of the route from San Antonio to Fort Clark throuuh to 111 Paso, making the entire distance seven huudred miles, the service to bo performed once a week aud back. Olhcors aud soldiers ot the army in Texas are thus placed in clone noHal communication with their trieiiiia at the military pots in New Mexico, California, aud on ihe frontier. The President has finally approved of tlie awards of the Military 1'oinuii.ssiou who were appointed to distribute'the rewards forthe arrejt ot booth and the conspirators. These rewards amount to nearly a quarter of a million dollars, and nothing now remains but lor tho Secretary ol War to announce and pay out tho money, e'o tar as it hi his hands. Tbis will bo u great relief to many who are interested aud bave beea here waiting anxiously lor many months at heavy expense. A committee of pentlcmenjfxom Connecticut, influenced by many extraordinary reports from Wasbinutan circulating in that State, have had an interview with the President. Among; tho number waa Major-tJeneral Hawley, the ITuion candidate for Governor. Tho reports in circula tion, both in regard to tho feelings and opinions of tbe President and of tlie General, were referred to, and were found to be in most retpects proes exaggerations or fabrications. The President, of course, desired to sou hia policv sustained wherever the issue was din tiuct'y and lairly made; but ho had not inter b red, and did not propose to interiere, witn tne politics of the States, lib. friends there knew better than he what course it was proper fo? tbtm to take to promote the great obiects which all earnest lTniou men deoired to iee accom plished. Gen. Hawloy, with equal frankness, cor rected the false impressions which had oepn created in retrurd to himself, and the interview, ' on ihe w uoie, appearen 10 oe sausiaciorv to trie visitors, wholelt favoraldy impressed with the frankness of the Pres'denc, and thoroughly con vinced that all Lis hopes and sympathies are ttill with the g.-cut Un:ou party otr tho country.
