The Soldiers' Mash Meeting. Tke
soldiers' mass meeting iu Wo t I'hlladolphi.t, ou
Thursday night, was larg. ly attended by the
gallant veterans of 1881 and 18C2, and many of
their triends. A Aeries ot very strong resolu
tions were read and adopted with, the greatest
enthusiasm. The objeet oi the nicelinjr, was to
urge upon our members 01 Congress the itiitico
of the claims of the eailior soldiers of the Re
public to bounties equal to the ainouat given to
those who cnliued at a l:itr period, and who
had but little fiehtlng to do. The meeting; also
endorsed by resolution tlio nomination of the
late pallant commander of the tamed "White
Star Division" for trie eubernatorial chair, and
promised him a hearty supf ort. General Geary
and the soldiers undwratund one another. A
number 01 eminent speiikera addressed the
meeting. Over one hundred and tilty new
names were added to the rolls of tho permanent
organization.
Gkukbal B. F. Mullen, Chief of the
Military and Naval Department of the Fenian
Brotherhood, was serenaded last nigrht at the
Girard House, by the sympathizers in the move
ment for Irieh nationality. 1'atriotic American
and Irish, airs were perlorined by the Liberty
Cornet Band, and speeches mads by General
Mnllen, DUtrict Centre Andrew Wynne, and
John liassan, Esq. General Mullen promised
bis triends that they need not have any fears of
the violation of tha eutral!ty laws by Colonel
O'Mahony. Hie remarks excited maca nthu
siasm. During the next week the Fenian
, Brotherhood will hold a series of meetings
throughout the citv, commencing on Monday
ight at Jefferson Hall, when General Mallei,
Stephen J. Meany, ot Cleveland, and others.

Dkatii of ax Old Citizen. On Thurs
day, Colonel Robert Carr, an old and well-known
citizen of Philadelphia, died in his eighty-ninth
yeiir. He was a printer and publisher' in the
early part of the present centurv, and atnoa
other works printed some ot Tom Moore's, while
that celebrated Irish bard was in this country.
ColoBel Carr, we think, learned his trade in
Benjamin Franklin's old primiing ottice, but of
couiso after Franklin had retired. He had,
however, a vivid recollectiou of Franklin. He
was a soldier of the war of 1S12, aa early mem
ber of the Pennsylvania IJi"tortcal Society, and
also of the Typographical Soeiety, and was
highly esteemed by a largo circle of friends.
New Militabt Organization. A num
ber ot meetiays have been held for the purpose
ol forming a regiment compused entirely of
honorably dischareed'. Boldiers. Tho wort of
recruiting is progressing naely, and they will be
able to parade on the 4th of July or before. Last
Tuesday eening a meeting was held at the
Western Engine House, and about twenty mem
bers joined. Nearly every tira company in the
city is represented. The suit will be similar to
that worn by the 72d Eegiment P. V. (Baxter's
Zouaves) in the army, and will cost bat a trifle.

of II. H. Sterling, of New York, who caused his

City Council. Last evening the first
meeting of the new Council was iield al the
City Hall, and was organized by the election of
Jesse Hail, Kq., as President, and Mr. Joseph
Nichols as Clerk. Mr. Hall wan President
of Council last year, but Mr. Nichols takes tin
place ol Samuel' W. Thoman, who has ben an
energetic and fatthtul clerk for several years
past, and wis the caucus l.ominee of the
Union party for the clerkship last evening, but
the Union members of Council atervrards went

war.
