Death or a Prominent CmzEir. Yes
terday James Kevins, Esq., at one time one of
oorniost prominent' brokers and e-titnable citi
zens, died at hia residence in this city. He wm
born in Norwich, Conuecticut, in August, I7i)0,
and is the only survivor of twelve children of
Colonel David Nevus, of that place. His brother
was for manv jenis'enior partner of the Urm of
Kevins, Townsend A Co., of New York city. Mr.
Kevins came to Philadelphia in 113, and in
partncr?hip witV his brother, Samuel Nevius,
Terv soon estaJltshed a large and prosperoaa
brokerage busfne-s. The firm was afterwards
changed to Nevins A Whclan, which coutinael
until Mr. Kevins retired, about lb&O. He married
the daughte.' of Jonathan Willis, and in this way
became collected in relationship with James
Martin, tt., whose death we announced some

Mr. Neane was au admirable specimen of the
pcutlemid of the olden time, gemal and kind in

oripinaJty ol mind, of a liberal disposition, and
given t hospitality. There was no one in Phila
delphia more universally esteemed, and his emi
nent ijcihl qualities always made 'him welcome

Brokn and other public institutions of the city.

STEALiNft Carpet. James Carr was ar
rest cd yesterday evening for the larceny of acme
carpet taken lrom Price's second-hand store,
situated on the Lancaster pike, near Thirty-ninth
street, llo was taken before Alderman Allen,
who committed him. Others were engaged iu the
robbery, but they managed to escape. Carr
was chased, and dropped the carpet duiing the
purposo.
