ber, and the other hall in February. This trust
is also nndrr the control or the Uuiirdians of the
I'onr, and the receipts lioni the legacy amounted
to f 194-10 last -year.
The will of James Datton, proved in 1813, con
tained a provision tortlio care of the poor of
Kouthwark and Northern Liberties. The ; re
ceipts last year amounted to $130.
John HcoH, of Kdlubureh, Scotland, be
queathed, In 1818, the mini of $7000, of three per
cent stocK, to the corporat ion of Philadelphia,
the Interest ot which to be luid out in premiums,
to be 'distributed amunir Insertions men and
women, whi make useful inventions; but no one
of such premiums to exceed $20, and alonjc with
which hi all be eiven a copper raedul with this
inscilption: "To the moft dei-ercine;." The
receipts last year amounted to $174310. -
The Fibe Depabtment. The Friendship
Fire Company have, we understand, purchased
a lot of ground on the corner of Sopviva and
Korrls streets, upon which they intend to erect
a handsome building, four ftories high. -
The liinijeold Hose Company, the only one
now in the city using the old ityle of fire equip
ments, intend following the fashion in a few
weeks, hy appearlne in new hats of the New
York style. Thehats are to be white, with red
lronta, and the naiae of the company in gold
letters.
Delegations from over forty fire companies
have held several meetings tor the purpose of
devising means for the relief f the firemen
injured at the fire in Koith Third street . A
benefit is to be given on Tuesday afternoon and
evening; at the New Chesnut Street Theatre; and
several others will soon te announced. i
The members of tho Southward Hose Com
pany turned out yesterday afternoon for the
purpose ot attending tho funeral of Dr. Henry A.
Drane, late a member of the company. Mem
bers of the National Lodge, No. 223, 1. O. of O. F.,
and of Columbia Lode, No. 91, A. Y. M., also
attended.
The Friendship Fire Company of 'Heading are
having prepared a magniticent frame, which is
to enclose the paotograph likenesses ofits mem
bers, for the purpose of presenting the same to
the Mechanic Fire Company of this city.
The Fairmount Fire Company "has com
, pany." A committee from the Northern Liberty
Fire Companv, of Washington, are with them.
On Saturday" tbey weie doing the various lions
of tho city in excellent style. ;
Massachusetts Gibl in Tbouble. On
Saturday evening one of the Fifth Ward police
noticed a femele in man's apparel and took her
in custody. Lieutenant Goldcy, not having any
proter accommodations at bis Station House,
sent her to the Mayor's olllce. One year ago she
was the sole support oi her mother, at Wor
cester, Mass., where she worked in a mill. A
youne man, who Is a machinist by trade, in
duced ner to leave her borne In a clandestine
manner. The rest of the story is soon told. He
accomplished her ruin, aim left her at Pittsburg
in a pitiable condition. A tier selling her cloth
ing, bhe donned man's apparel, and came to this
city on a coal train, riding the whole way on an
uncovered car. She has a very bad cold, and
save she suffered intense agony during her long
trip on the car. She expresses a great desire to
got back to her once happy home. She Is but
eighteen years of age, yet the misery ot one year
Has given ner care-worn iooc. i
lit The attention of the Mayor will be called to
her case this morning, and he will, without
doubt, send her to her friends. She is rather
reticent as to the terrible lilo she has dragged
out since she ran away from her home, but her
distressed countenance would be sutllcicat to
make others appreciate their yirtuobs homes,
however humble they may be.
Distressing Case A Woman Bushed
to Death. An old lady named Ann Orme,
about seventy years of age, was burned to death
shortly alter 3 o'clock yesterday morning, at ber
residence, No. 941 South Ninth street, above
Carpenter. The sad aO'alr took place in the
back room of the first floor. Since the death of
her husband, which occurred about three weeks
ago, she waB in the habit of sleeping in this
room, borne of the neighbors broke in the door,
and by the application of a bucket ot water
subdutd the fames, which were gaining bea
way. The woman's body was found lying upon
the floor between the stove and partition. Her
hair was entirely burned off, and the face and
body greatly disfigured. It is supposed that her
dress caught fire from the stove. There was no
other occupant of the hoase but herself. The
room in which she wasi found was very much
scorched by the fire, and in a rather disordered
condition. She is English by birth, and, as far
as is known, is without a relative in this coun
try. Her husband bad been engaged in the busi
ness ct knife and scissor sharpening and um
brella mending, and had been living in the
house for the "past twenty years. The couple
were well known and highly respected in the
neighborhood. Coroner Taylor., will hold an
inquest on the body to-day.
Police Items. A Bostonlan at the Con
tinental on Saturday became noisily tipsy. He
was removed by a policeman to the Central
Station. Upon searching him there was found
one hundred and seventeen dollars In money,
three gold watches, and a large number of
chains. He bad passes upoa all the railroads in
the Eastern States. Had he fallen Into other
hands than those of the police he would have
made good, plucking. ;
OiEeers Nutt and Berry brought on lrom New
York, on Saturday, a man who is charged with
Betting tire to a stable in Say street, on last Mon
day night week, on wnich a number of calves
were burned to death. He was locked up lor a
hearing.
The Dollce of the Second District took posses
sion, on Saturday, of about 300 yards of canvas
and 58 long carriage-whips, which bad been
brought here horn Now 1'eik under what were.
deemed suspicious circumstances.
Committed fob Contempt of Cotjbt.
U. O. Wright, lately a special agent in the Trea
sury Department for the detection of counter
feiters, was before Judse Cadwalader, In the
United States District Court, on Saturday, for
contempt ol the Court's process. He is tho
chief witness in the case of several dealers in
counterfeit money, and did not make his appear
ance at the last term of the Court. Wright
stated to the Judge that he had been Induced to
keep out of the w? because of certain repre
sentations maae 10 mm by which be considered
it unsafe to remain. lie had been to Canada,
and bad returned voluntarily. . The Judee. in
. committuiK him for contempt, told him that if
he did not do that ne Biioniii require $ 10,000 bail
lor his appearance as a wnuess.
Accidents. On Saturday, Samuel Q.
Cox, a carter, was thrown from a cart at Twen
lieth street and Washington avenue, aud was
killed. The borse ran away at the whistle of a
, locomotive. He left a wit a and two children,
lie resided in Pritchett Erf eat, above Thirteenth.

Emma Weibln, lour yen old, was shockingly
burned yesterday at her parents' residence,
Brown street, below Front, by her clothes
taking tire. Her injuries ure such that but
blight hopes are entertained of her recovery,

ware Is so Iree from lee that navigation is not at
all impeded. Yesterday the wind wan high and
blustering irora the south and southeast, and
towards night some rnin fell.' A more disagree
able March dav could not well be experienced In
this latitude. The high winds, favorable for up
river navigation, brouaht quite a number of
ve ssels engaged in the coasting and oyrter trade.
A decline in the price oi bivalves may bo antioi
pated. Wo learn that very evore w eather was
experienced on tho coast, thero being, for the
pat ten dins, snow and rain squalls, and bittcf
cold weather, which caused much suflerluir
among the crews of the many vessels bulleted
about on the stormy ocean.
The Fenians' Fourth op July. St.
Patrick's Day will be nest Saturday, and the
Fenians are making extensive preparations to
do honor to thiir patron saiut. At the Academy
ot Music on that evening the Iicv. Dr. Moriarty,
O. 8. A., w ill deliver his annual lecture for the
benefit of the House of the flood Shepherd. Dr.
Moriarty has chosen for his subject "Ireland,"
the "Apostle," tho "Nation," "Faith." . At St.
Fatnck's Church the usual Impressive ceremo
nies will bo solemnized with all tho adiuncts of
superbly rendered music and an eloquent pane
gjric. Writ Refused. The wretched mur
derer, Christian Bergcr, who killed Miss Watt,
at Oermantown, is now nervine himself to meet
his late. He was intoimc d on Saturday that the
Supreme Court had refused the writ of error
aiplied for by his counsel. No one expected it
would be grautcd, but it probnged the prison
er's life byltiBtso many days. Tho caso now
awaits tho signature of the death-warrant by tho
Uoverhor. Meanwhile Uerpor iu his cell Is mln ,
istercd to by the Sisters of Charity. He mani
tests very Utile external emotion of Bny nature
whatever.
Fbom other Fobts. The schooner E. &
L. Marts arrived at this port yesterday from
Cientuegos with 370 hhds, 41 tierces sug'tr, and
130,000 cigars. Also, the schooner Ju'ia &
Oamage, trom St. Johns, N. b., with 326,0u0
laths and 60,100 pickets. Tho schooner (art
Dwen arrived on Saturday, from Wilmington,
N. C, with 290 bbls. rosin, 100 bbls. pitch, 62
bbls. tar, 3 hhds. dried fruit, 70,360 shingles,
6900 feet ol lumber, and 100 tons railroad iron.
Hospital Cases. William Mullen, twenty
seven years old, of Chester, Pa., while stepping
upon the platform of a car on the Philadelphia,
Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad, had his
rinht arm badly crushsd. Amputation was per
formed at the Hospital. George Co.vle, twenty
one years old, residing at No. 1418 Wood street,
bad two of his fingers crushed between cog
wheels. . at . Uald win's locomotive works, on
Saturday. ,
Btjbqlabt. The store and dwelling at
N. W. corner of Evangelist and Eighth streets, was
entered burglariously yesterday morning, and
robbed of $130, a goli watch valued at $75, aud
a check on a New York bank. The thiet was
seen in the house by one of the inmates, but
made his escape with the plunder.
The European Mania. On Saturday,
E. W. Latz, J. uurger, Caroline saeicht, L.
Ladner, C. Mann and lady, A. Schwarz, A. Ro
senbaam, T. Rosenbaum, and N. Kaercher, all
registered from this eity, left Bremen and South
ampton in the steamship Hermann.
New Railboad. A new railroad bos been
protected to run lrom the Norristown and Phila
delphia Railroad, near the WiBsahlckon, through
.Ft v mourn ana centre square, in Montgomery
county, and forming a function wiih the North
Pennsylvania Railroad at Lansdale .
Eclipse. A total eclipse of the moon will
occur on the evening of the 30th in at. It will
begin at five minutes past 9 o'clock, will be at
its height at twelve minutes past 10, and beein to
disappear at nity-one minutes past 11. Jt will D9
vinible throughout the United States.
Paying: Old Wabbants. The City Trea
surer commenced on Saturday to pay city war
rants dated prior to 1804. A large number were
paid, and a maioritv - of those receiving the
money had ouen holding the warrants as an in
vestment.

Since the war broke out, the Quartermaster's
Department at Cincinnati has nurchascd cloth
ing and equipage to the amount of upward of

Forelcn papers announce the death of Peter
Joseph Lenne, one of the most distinguished
horticulturists of German v, and the founder
of the modern German school of landscape
gardening.
Three young women, nr.raedMary Landalcer,
Louisa Landaker, and Amanda l'resler, were
frozen to death near Chain Lake Centre, Minne
sota, on the night of the 13th nit., while ou their
tray home from a sii giug school.
Brown University has one hundred and
scvenly-stx students, eighty-four of whom are
professors of religion. One conversion has been
made during the past year, and forty-live
students are preparing for the ministry.
The Naw 'Orleans papers mention the sale
of two large plantations, twenty-two andtwenty
six miles above that city, for $125,0U0. They

hundred and ntty thousand hotheads of sugar
in 1860.
A California paper says that the culture of
raisins promises to become an Important feature
in the industrial future of California. The Sacra
mento Union, speaking of samples sent to that
oOice, says they are full of saccharine matter,

out most ot the interior towns of Maine on tae
subject of local lotteries. Schemes embracing
farms, mills, spavined horses, cheap watches,
brass jewelry, etc., are more plentilul than suow
