General Bnell and Senator Sherman.
From tlte New York World to day.
General D. C. Buell thus puts his foot on a
slanderous story, invented to his discredit, out
of political hostility or- military lealousies, we
presume, and which Senator Sherman allowed
himself to repeat in the Senate the other day:
The Hon. John Sherman, United Sla'ea Senate:
Kir: 1 and tbe to How mar passage in a speech
which you delivered in the Henate on tho 2iith
ultimo: ...
"It ever the time shall come when I can no
longer confide in his devotion to the principles
upon which be was elec.ed, I will Did lure -veil
to Andrew Johnson with unaffected sorro.
1 wfll remember
that when a retreating general would have left
Nashville to its late, that again with heroic
courage he maintained his nosi."
It will be understood by most persons that I
was the ollicer to whom you mean to allude as
bavins been prevented from abandoning Nash
ville, during the invasion of Kentucky ov Gene
rals Braes and Kir by Smith in the autumn of
1H02. The story has "been a popular ono in cer
tain quarters, and once belore appeared in a
shape wnicn induced me to give n ouiciat con
tradiction. Admitting that importance has again been
eiven to it by the position in which you have
repeated and endorsed it, 1 shall, on some future
occasion more fitting than the present, recur to
the story, lor the -purpose of tracintr it to its
origin and refuting it. I will permit myself to
say here, however, that, in addressing the Senate
upon the important question of reconstruc
tion, vou would have done better if you had
not erone into the domain of Action to find ex
cuses, whither lor Anally givine to the policy of
the Executive the support wnicn it merits, or ror
now hesitating to commit yourself absolutely
against it. l our oneaient se. vanr,

Condition ot Western Colleges.
Our educational interests naturally suffered to
a considerable extent during the war. This was
especially true of our Western Colleges, whose
young men buckled on the Armor with an un
paralleled enthusiasm and unanimity. Since
the close of hostilities, however, these various
institutions have, as we learn Irom the recent
reDort of the Society lor the Promotion of Col
legiate Education, regained moot of their former
prosperity.

which is modelled after Yale, though noniiaully
under the controloi the Conaretratiouul Church,
is vet desicrued to furnUh educational facilities
for evory denomination. An effort is now being
made to secure an endowmeutol $100,000, which
will place the Colleue on a firm and permanent
basis. President Moinson has been spending
some weeks In the metropolis lor this purpose,
and is, we hear, meeting with encouraging suc
