(Tlie Report of Onr Own Special.)
COLD IRON AND STEAL ASSOCIATION.
INTERVIEW WI1H THE PRESIDENT
He Explains His Policy for the
Twenty-eighth Time that Day.
Kie.. Etc, Etc. F.t ttto., JEto., Etc.
EJTMs respectable Delegation from the "pad
dling' districts ot our State made a call upon
the President yesterday. Just after the delega
tion from Baltimore pot ont, and before the dole
Ration from Pittsburg, on the subject of Oil, got
in, and as they were accompanied by Moorhead
than most delegations that the. President has the
pleasure of explaining his policy to, they were
received with marked attention. It was pre
dicted that some ot the more prominent of this
delegation would make their mark in the event
ot a visit to the White House, tfhich was
true, for it was discovered, after they left, that
nome of the yellow satin chairs in the East
Room were pretty badly marked with a compo
sition of iron-rust and oil, proving that the
chairs were satin to their detriment.
COLONEL HOORHEAD PRESENTING: THE DELEGA
TION TO THE PRESIDENT.
Captain Ward, of Detroit, President of the Iron
and Steel Association, formally presented the
delegation to the President; but as he was not
in want of any delegation Just now, having a
large stock on hand and more promised, ho told
them to be seated.
SALLTS OP WIT.
Mr. ,Ward (the Iron President) : "We have
come to tender you our respects." The Presi
dent here interrupted by asking where they
had left the Tender, it they had unhitched it
from the Locomotive? The Iron man replied
that they wire not railroad men. President
Johnson said, "What are you?" Mr. Ward an
swered, "I sell Iron and Steel for a living.''
"Oh," replied the President, "most of the dele
gations that come here to praise me do that;
if they don't sell Iron they sell something
else, and invarubly steal fbr a living." Mr.
Ward made the remark that he thought the
President was indulging in irony. "Yes," said
the President, "flat irony." Alter a few more
remark in this lively and interesting vein, in
which the President never tailed to explain his

pol'cy, Mr. Ward contain d ia his speech: "V
BT3 a combination of workinpmcn. These work'
tngnen represent 60.000 employes, with their
families, 760,000 people." This one fact con
vinced the President that an IroR and Steal
employe was among the most proline professions
averaging 15 persons to every family. After
the Iron and Steal men bad made soma other
remarks, in which they used other metallic sub
stances, sail sawder, for example, which was th
substance of their remark", the President ex
plained his policy.
MB. WARD GETS AM IMPRESSION.
Mr. Ward here said, "Weare under the impress
slon that we Lave a Government." Where he
roiild have got that impreoslon wns a wonder
lo loth parties. It wns found out afterwards that
it was an old Impression he got at the Govern
ment Printing Ollice, and it wai not a good one.
20,000 arcEcnEs by judge kellby. t
The Iron and Steal men ordered 20,000 Of
Judge Kelley's Tarlir Speech, as they liked to
read it so much; they thought they' could soon
read 20,000 through, by each man on the Com
mittee taking a certain number a day.

A CORSE CAR-TOON FOR THE NEW COUNTY
BUILDINGS.
1C24 Mifflin Street..
Mr. Scries Editor: Why don t you urge the
Horse Curs to run on Sundays? I have never
yet seen the Chesnut Street Bridge, and I under
stand its case has been decided in the Supreme
Court; but whether a decided good, or a derided
bad case, it did not state. Next Sunday week
Jim Maguire and Knuckle Ben are going to have
a dog fight, with two 16 ponnd pups, out near
the Falls. Now, how am I to get ont there to
breathe the fresh air, and be there In time for
tho fight? Besides, them as don't approve of dog
fights could go to church, whereas, now, they
can't go, unless they walk, if they are poor, as I
am. All of our chaps are in favor of the cars,
because when we goes to church we wants to
ride, or we don't go. We don't much anyhow,
but when we do go we wants to go right.

The good ship Continental that sailed with the
300 fair damsels for Washington Territory, will
oon arrive. The miners can now each have
their pick. A miner without a Pick would make
but poor progress. After striking a Lode of
silver they can now strike for the load of gals,
and perhaps reach the vain without much
trouble.
