" Recently tha Bra zilians have been incroaa'mjr their forces, so that the Allws must now have assembled forty-flve thousand men. By asreement President Ucne ral Mitre is Commander-in-Chief while the Allies occupy the Aremtine territory. It is said that by the end ol January matters in preparations -will be read; (or an attack on Fortress IlumaiU. Thl plnce lias lately been much strengthened. About two hundred euns are in position, chains are placed across the river, and torpedoes are planted near it. President Mitre Intends to attack thla fort simultaneously by land and water. TUB PARAGUAYAN DISPENSES. Across the river Parana there are two ferries, or fords, whcie the banks of the river are prac ticable lor tsams. These are Paso da Patria and Peso do los Bur-yes. At tha former the Paraguayant are stronely fortifying and prepar ing well to dlBpiite the pass. As the other pa is unfortified it is likely that PrcsieVnt Mitre will eboose this ona whun he is ready, lie has ordered the preparation of three hundred canoes, to hold twenty men each, for crossing. By such leans the Paraguayans often come over at night nd steal cattle and reconnoitre. General Flore?, of Urnpuay, is guarding the Paso da Patila with Brazilian troops; Ocneral Caceres, ot Cornentes, is at the city or Corrien tes, commanding Argentines: General Panucro is witn the commander-in-chief, two and a half leagues from the city of Corrientes. PARAGUAYAN ATTACK aMJPTJLBED. The most Impovtunt piece of news by this steamer is that the Paraguayans have again crossed over at the Paso da i'utria and attacked the cavalry stationed there tinier command of Genetnl Caceres. The enemy at tirst numbered one thousand men, but havm;.- beon reinforced by five hundred more, compris'ini; artillery and cavalry, they attacked Caceres' brave followers, but were driven back in disorder to the moun tains which abound in that section. A REION Of TE r.KOR IN PARAQUAT. The last conscription of Paraquay had added to many old men and bojs to the army pa to in duce the belief that, as to men, Lopez is limited. Several prisoners", Ion? incarcerated, have died, it is said, of poison. Many women are held in prison for political oflenses, such as expressing opinions averse to the Paraguayan Government. In bliort, Lopez has instituted a reign of terror that is too severe to last long. GENERAL TJBUIZA'S FORCES, of Entre Eios, have a?ain dispersed in largs numoers. General Mitre has written to him to send on to boadquartcr all the troops ready for the field, and4o punish the delinquents. Already large numbers of officers and men are applying to General Urquiza for pardons. Nina have already beea shot for mutiny er desertion. General Urquiza Is etttctually biding the Allies by his viRor and discipline. At the outset Para guay ottered htm great inducements to join Lopez; bur he declined, wisely as well as patri otically. Ills opposition to the Allies would have prolonged the struggle through yeirs. SCARCITY OP PROVISIONS AMONQ THE ALLIES. The fact that tho Paraguayans, in their one hundred and ninety-two days' invasion, swept away every cow and sheep In Corrientes, makes supplies of meat tor the army scarce and aear, A few days ago I saw eix very splendidly got up ambulances rtadv for the Army, labelled in large letters, "Argentine Sanitary CommiFsion." A recent fair lor that society here the first of the kind ever held yielded $20,000 in silver. The Allied fleet is maio up chiefly of Brazilian vessels. Four or five of the sixteen vessels are Argentine. TJraguuy has none at present; but she has just bought three fine gunboats fioiu the United States, wkleb, under the South American Barnes of Yatay, Vigilante, and Uruguay, will soon )o in the fleet. Tho Brazilian iron-clad 2'amandare has succeeded in getting above Cor rientes. She is greatly relied on in the pro jected assault on Humaita. The Brazilian monitor is also there. A Brazilian steam transport was wrecked last week on the Iuo Grande coast, while conveying troops to the seat qt war. There were on board 650 men, ot Mhom two officers and five soldiers perished. As to the state of ffeling here, no one ex presses any doubt as to the issue. Lopez must fall, and soon. Every confidence is expressed in our chief officers; thus far they have steadily progressed towards the subluxation of tho Pa raguayan horde. The discipline of the army is stricter than ever was known amoug Argentina troops, and they fieht with great bravery and dcttf iniiiatiori. j-he national paper currency is constantly increasing in value. Both bonds and buck issues nave advanced about ten per cent, since' tlie'war begun. The only excitine politi cal question is not war or no war, but the re moval 01 tne national capital irom iiuenos Avres. It is expected that Chili wilt make demands on this Government, as she did on Uruguay, for sending out privateers ana estaousning prize courts; and under tlrs impression vesterdav gold Increased one-twentieth of one per cent. not a very destructive rise. The Parana river is rising a fact favorable to the grounded Bra- zutiuiiH. 'ine united states war steumers wasp ana bnawtnui navi- arrived at Montevideo. In some parts of the country the crrasshonnerg are stripping the fields of all irreen vegetation. leaving the peach stones hanging on the leafless tiees, und drinking the streams drv. Several serious Indian invas'ons have occurred some of them within one hundred miles of Buenos Ayics. They are bolder than for years, knowing that our soldiers ar3 away at the war. Tho -wheat harvest has been Gathered: it is the iosl extensive ant productive ever known hero. Of wool, lour ana a hull trillions ot pounds nave been brought to this market. The price Is going down, us there is but iiitle comnetition. The in crease of theep this year is set down at ten mil lions of animals. From the San Juan silver mines eight and a hull tons ot tilver have arrived. Bvenoh Ayreb. December 29. To-dav a sun plemeutal mail leaves to overtake the other at Montevideo. I send vou the latest news. Two of the seven Brazilian transports aerotiQd in the Parana river ai cealn floating. That river is covered with Biuntl cralt, in the rivr trade, carrying trom one to twenty tons, nearly all under foreign flags, chiefly ilaltan. They are generally manned by iheir owuers,.who are mostly umible to, read or write, and they are skilful smuggler. They demand nil the reaped for iheir liiig that is due to an East Iudiainan. It is a wonder that the system docs not oecasion ceaseless European wars. LOPEZ IN A TICHT PLACE. No warlike movements have occurred, except that the allies are coucontrutincr. uud preparing for an Invasion of I anigcay. There ure rumors of peace; but the allies ure pledged to accept no other conditions tiiau the expulsion f Ljpez from South Aiuenca, and the division of tho spoils. Provisions ere bo scarce in Corrientes that cattle ure bought m Kntro Rio in pr-ei num bers. and driven over to th titrav. Tho result is that the pries of caltlo havo advanced so mueh as to almost suspend the annual killing iur iuo uiues, uuiiri, mm tuiiow. Such large reinforcements are comlncr from , Brazil that the allies ure believed to have iiit thousand men within a day's march of the passes ot mo rurana. EIGIITT THOUSAND BRAZILIANS IN in! FIELD A good authority b re estimates the Brazilian forces under arms in the allied service ou the frontier at eighty thousand men. Ten thousand men have atrived at Montovldoo during thelmt two months en route to Comentes. Within the last thtce days sixteen hundred more have arrived. Eighteen hundred are on the way, and four thousand two hundred are waiting lor transports to bring them to the river Plate. I cannot believe that all the designs of Brazil have jet appeared on the surface. The utmost activity prevails in the province of Entre Bios. General Urquiza is gathering troops with great industry for tho allied camp. AnoTdcrhas been isRucd shutting up all tho grog shops ol the "rural districts'' ol that pro vince. The same is proposed In this pro vince. Thus we shall have the "Maine law," and without a single temperance society in the country. ... , Later advices contradict the report of ian French war steamer Decldce bringing gold from Paraguay for Lcpez or any one else. The news by the French steamer yesterday has slightly raited the price of fine wools. During the month of December 17,683 bales of wool and 48t! bags havo been shipped. Aboui half of the whole amount went to the .United States. Immense quantities of new' wheat begin to strive. The old blockade-runners Aqnes, Arkle, and Lelia Bei have been scld to the Brazilian Steam Packet Company. The heat here 1s unprecedented, reaching for come days one hundred and two and one hun dred ana four degrees Fahrenheit In the shade. yesterday it niocetaiea, ana tnt nignesi wai eighty-nine degrees: to-day seventy-seven degrees.
