Semi-Annual Commencement at
the Academy of Muslo This
Mornlng-Llst of Graduates
Highly Interesting
Proceedings, Etc.
The Flfty.flfih Semiannual Commencement of
the High School occurred this morning, at the
Academy of Mubic. The immonse building was
crowded to its uMnoat capacity, the larger pro
portion ot the audience bolus; Indies, and the
pcisonal friends of the gradimtinR class. Mr.
Eaward Shippi n presided. The exercises com
menced al 10 o'clock, by the iiue performances
of the Gcrmaoia Orchestra, under the loudership
Of Carl Sent,, iollowed by an eloquent prayer
by Rev. J. Yaughan Smith.
, John Davifl Watson, of tho North American,
delivered tho opening address. He referred to
the fact that the existence of the High School
had been threatened in certain quarters. He
urged the people to sustain tho Institution,
terming it the capstone of the eJuca
tional pyetcm of Philadelphia. Twenty
seven years ago tho High School was established
because tho primary chool3 wore inefficient
and a head was needed. Mr. Watson referred
to tne chargo that tho High School sent on
drono into the community, instancing th
fact that almost every department of civil and
military life had representatives who wor
graduates of the Phila.ielp'.iU HUh School.
Mr. Watson went very thor u;hly into a dis
cussion of the system of education practised a
the nigh School, maintaining that its course of
study was equal to any college in the country.
He bolievcd that it the standard of the grammar
schools was elevated, we might have a number
of nigh Schools instead of one, too small to
accommodate all the applicants.- Tho speaker
closed by asking the audience if they desired to
see the High School abolished? which was
answered by a unanimous "Ko."
The Salutatory A ldre3s was delivered by John
B. fetauttcr, commencing with a very fluttering
compliment to the auiiicnco, and the kindness
which the public ever extended to those strug
gling to improve their minds Ov gaining an du'
cation. Tne speaker referred to the fact that
education is the strong bulwark of a republican
iorm of troverumcnt, and urged a greater atteu
tiontothe educational wants of tho yojth of
the nation.
The Scientific Address was made by Benjamin
F. Houseman, who treated of the connection
between science and nature; drawing illutra"
tions from every-day lite, and showing that every
nse had progressed only by developing natural
forces. Mr. Houseman made -a most ' excellent
address, and received bis due meed of applause.
Mifflin D. Nece delivered a historical address.
His tncnie was the importance of the study of
the past, and the effects which bygone events
exercise npon the present. Ho made a resume
of important epochs, and argued thtt no event
of past time was witbout a controlling influence
upon the generations that followed. The close
of his address was devoted to our national annals,
and contained many eloquent passages.
The next address was delivered by Samuel C.
Coale, Jr., his subject being "Time, and its In
fluence on Man" delineating tho progress which
the race had made in the successive ages of tho
world, and arguing a greater attention to the
mental culture of the community. The speech
gave evidence of deep study aud thought, and
was warmly received.
Frank H. Welsh delivered a most excellent
address upon the subject of Popular Heading.
Ho referred to the low standard of the literature
which is furnished to the public at tho present
day, especially those that are lonnd dn the
shelves of circulating libraries and on book
stands. The seutiments of the speech wore
' greatly appreciated by the audience, who testl
lied their estimation by repeated bursts of
applause.
Ernest A. Farrington delivered the honorary
address, taking for his subject the "Value of
Life, and the vast responsibilities which are
attached to it." The effort was an exceedingly
fine one, not only in regard to its composition,
but on account ot the fine manner In which it
was delivered.
The degrees were then conferred by Edward
Shippen, Esq., President of the Board of Jschoo1
Controllers.
Alter a flnvyoledictory. by Robert Williams,
the vast audience dispersed to their homes,
satisfied that the Hiph School had not this year
proved a failure.
