THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPII. PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 18GG.
Waiting for the Dentist.
From Ijyridon Society.
The day was. brlcht and sunny, the weekly
Punch was funny;
J3ut Punch with all its charms for mo had no
temptation,
At the (lontWn I was waiting, heart and couratro
palpiiatint.
And I cared not lor the weather, in Mid antici
pation. Would I were a Special Header! I would beg
the prentle reader
To listen to mj plehdines for Borne mercy to my
rhyme.
About the thoushti that, teasing, tnado me hot
ind kept me freezing,
Kept me mirthful, kept me mournful, all that
dreaiy waiting time.
"Love," I thoucht, "impetuous, ecethinp, is
another state of teethimr,
Alilce we feel its torments In palace and In hut:
lint we give up proans and sighing, break) our
youthful vows of dying
For the dear beloved obicct when our wisdom
, teeth are cut.
"Jcnlouny wo feci for love's sake, 'tis exactly
like the toothache,
With its quick ppasmodic throbbing and its sud
den fits of pain:
Brave is he who hides this feelinpr, bears his
ancruiih wiihout snuealiriir.
And when thelitis over, holds his head erect
again.
"To Tain we are apprenticed, Aga is but a skil
ful dentist,
He 'stops' our cares and troubles with a bi'ter
dose of death.''
Here my similes were ended, of love und tooth
ache blended.
And delighted at their truth, I paused to tuke a
breath. ,
"What spoony moralizing!'' cries the reader,
crttieizihp,
But It kept my mind employed till I heard a sort
01 purr,
And a lootman stood beside me, grinning
covertly yet widely,
Then quoth he with a firm "Now my m:utcr's
ready, sir !"
