A Systematic Swindleb. On Saturday

rapro lu a number of wholesale swindles. He
would call upon wholesale dealers, represent
himself as a member ol a firm doing business In

ars. He would pay for the goods with a draft
exceeding the amount of the b.ll, and then
would ask tor the difference In cash between the
bill of goods and the sunn which the draft
called for. 8oine of the dealers complied with

Inquire In respect to the dn.tts before the Roods
were shipped. In all instances the drafts were
discovered to be worthless. Hut the swindler
did not confine his operations to the dealers In
dry goods or clothing; he swindled confection

tried his hand at the makers o' monuments, or
dering two from different marble workeis, for a
deceased brother, who, he represented to one
ol them, had been killed in the Rebel service at

The Episcopal Hospital. This charity
has now six wards occupied by patients. The
number usually in them is about ninety. They
are received subject to the rules of the institu
tion, without regard to creed, color, or country.
In addition to medical treatment, the patients
enjoy the spiritual care of an eilicient chaplain,
and nave the ministrations ot a band of devoted
Christian women, whose services have proved
invaluable. The expenses of the institution
during the past year were $27,000. The reliable
income is 70U0, and the difference is made up
principally by contributions.

TnR IRON TBADB IS EKOLAKD.
AnEnelish lonrnal gives the following sum
mary ol the official statistics of the British iron
trade during the past year:
'The great advance In the value of iron in
18(15 forms an Important feature in our commer
cial bletory. Production has increased, the
demand for home use and exoort has been some
what active, and even a seven per cent, bank
rate has not prevented Scotch pig iron from
advancing to 65s. per ton. The production of
Iron in Scotland lat year was 1,135,0110 tons,
being sn increaso of 4000 tons as compared with
1HC4. The particulars are as follows:
Iroi action tons 1 135,000

"The stock on hand is no 600.000 tons, or
about 100,000 tons less than it was at the close
of 1864. This great deerenso indicates much
healthiness in the trade, and in a measure
accounts lor the rise lu prices during tho past
year. In Kngland the transactions in metuls
generally have been extensive. The quotations
have, consequently, steadily improved, although
the importations Irom abroad have been on
a liberal scale. Returns for the United King
dom give the annexed arrivals during the first

last year. Of railway parcels she took 39,421;
of castings, 11,897; ot hoops, 5210; aud ot
wrought, i57 tons, lieieian competition does
not, therefore, appear to have extended itself to
HuBsia. Upwards ol 25,000 tons ot wrought irou
were lorwarded to India last year, to the same
quarter nearly 100,000 tons of railway iron were
snipped. The gradual extension of the railway
system in India and Russia, and the trilling
quantities produced in tno tat'er country, must
long continue to have an important bearing upon
the trade in the united Kingdom. Home ot the
shippers of pig iron may hesitate to operate
largely at rjresent nrices: b it it is well known
that the quotations in most of the markets of
the world are above our own, and that, even
now, large pronts are realized without dlluculty."
