THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH". PIIJLADELVIIIA, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 18CG. CITY INTELLIGENCE For Additional Vity liML'ujaice ;c F ,'tti '!,. Thk Sabbath Question. AnoJiermw t lwr of the friends of the Hubbatb. was held last rvenintrin the West Arclt Street Presbyterian Church, W. A. Tenbrook, Eq., in the Chair. The ircceedinp-s were opened with prater by Kev. W. F. Eva, after which tho minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The Committee on Legislir.uro reported through their Chairman, Rev. Dr. Junkln, who made some very impressive remarks respecting the prospect of maintaining the cause through the acts of that body. , ; In alludlne to some articles which had appeared In a morning papT oi this city, he said V that treat ignorance nau boon shown by the writer ol the articles In qucftion. Base attacks ' bad been made on pre at and pood men, and tn ' quotations, much injustice had been done to the authors trom which he had quoted. Kev. J. Wheaton Smith, D. D., offered the fol lowing resolution: . Krsolved, lhat whilo no propor effort should be emitted for the Pieventlon ot the contemplated violation of the Sabbath, our attention should be stwiallr direoied to existing and groator violations oi the aay. He advocated the resolution in a few forcible remarks, and stated that there oupht to be a decided action among Christians and all moral ruen in reference to the rum shops of this city, and stafo-d that if these should bo closed we need not fear tha: Sunday papers or car running on the Sabbath would meet with encoiuauenient. Ttcinarks were also made by ilev. Dr. Johnson, Mr. Bteinmctz, and bthcrs, favoring the resolu tion, which whs passed iinauinioiiBly. A communication was received from Jay Cooke, Esq., expressing his hearty sympathy with the movement, and regretting that, owing to his repldenco being out ot town, he would ba obliged to decline serving as President. The re signation was accepted. The committee to visit the Mayor In reference to the cloying of taverns on Sunday, were vested with power to add to their number. The clerk was requested to have tho constitu tion and list of oflicers published in the papers. On motion it was resolved that when the meeting adjourn it be to meet at the cull of the Chairman and Secretary. . On motion, the Secretary and President of the meeting weie instructed to call the Board of Mannecrs toeether at such time as desired, Kev. Dr. Brainerd favored tho agit avion of tho ques tion of closing taverns on Sunday. Hi was per suaded that it hal already done good. Said he, "Let us persevere, and wc will have success." The. meeting was then closed wl'.n prayer by Rev. Dr. Smith. The Education of Methodist Minis ters. Last evening, at the Union M. K. fjhurca, a meeting was held in regard to one of the special objects by which it is proposed to com memorate the centenary anniversary of the establishment of the Methodist Church in this country Denominational Education. It will be remembered that it was proposed to raise two millions of dollars as a permanent fund to edu cute ministers ot the M. E. Church. To further this purpose was the design of this meeting. Bishop Ames addressed the meeting at length, adverting to the evident fact that the prosperity and life of a nation depend upon the diffusion ol knowledge and intelligence among the people; and adverted to the hitr.v of the past Republics ot Greece and Borne, tracing the causes of their downfall in the lack ot, virtue and education among the masses. The Centenary Anniversary particularly com mends this great duty of eel ucatine the future preachers to the hearts and sympathies of all the Church to fulfill, the declaration that to whom much was given much ehall be required. Tho colleges of the Church are great balance wheels, that keep up and equalize the circulation from age to age. The people scarcely know yet this conservatism, but in the future they shall possess its power. Bishop Simpson referred to the great numbers of the Church, it having about nine hundred and thirty thousand communicants within it. Thus, (Jod'having blessed them with such vast num bers, hus devolved upon them a more earnest and greater task than other denominations. These others had older and better endowed theo logical seminaries. This was not true in the West, wherein, in some Stu.t;s, they had more colleges and more students, but in th East the reverse was the case, trom the other Protestant denominations having been earlier on the ground and preoccupied the tield. Thus arises tho necessity ot greater exertions to enlarge the seminaries, to cultivate and gather in the fruits of the harvest. lie honored other churches for their great advancement: ho bade them Cod speed therein; but the Methodist Church must awake to the necessity of this action, or it will .lose most of the young persons from its own com munion, they being attracted otherwise by the power of educational association. For these as sociations are very strong, and the church that controls thoir education will obtain the greatest numbers. . Tne Insane at the Almshouse. On January 1, 106, there were in the institution r;2 paticntd, 202 men and 300 women, 35. in all, giving a total of 921 who were under treatment uring the year. The daily uverage of patients was l'JO men, 370 women: 674 in all. Few per sons, perhaps, have any idea that there are so many insane people in Philadelphia, yet this is only one of the several institutions of the kind. During the year there were 353 patients dis charged as louows: Women. JTotal. 93 174 21 . 61 u 16 60 112 Discharged cured.. Dine barred improv ed . . . . Dif charged unimproved. . In his report Dr. Butler urges that the build ing now occupied by the insane poor of Phila delphia be devoted to the purposes of a Home of Correction, and that new 'mildings, better adapted to ttio curative treatment of the pa tients, be erected on a farm farther removed than the p'esent location liom the city. He thinks that there are meu enough among tho patients to work a farm of lut v acres, and that with proper facilities a lartre part of the labor of the Institution of all kind-, cmu be perlormed by tho patients, both male and female. Admikisteijinq Raw-uide. Testerday on Chcsnut street, above Eighth, a fashiona bly dressed young woman wes seen to approach a tall man wearing a military cap, and as soon as tbo got within strikiug distance to apply a cowhide to his shoulders. A IIardsomb Fresknt, A centluman connected with the Engineer';! Department of the Philadelphia Navy Yard for softie three years punt, and having just resigned, was the re cipient of a handsome testimonial tn the shape of a signet ring, irom a number of his lrirnds. with whom he had been officially connected, as a token ot their esteem and Iriendship. Our readers are indebted to this gentleman tor seve ral humorous productions eniai.atlng from his pen, under the nom de plume of "Pookuis," and will Join with us in wishing him God speed in his new sphere. " Anxious to Testify. Mr. A. C. Schncll, of Warren. Pa., writes to Alderman Hurlev, ol this city, that he is a victim of tho bogus Geue ral McCook, and desires information when tho trial ot the rascal will take place, that he may appear as a witness. The letter does not Rtate the amount he has been swindled out of. I MATTERS OVER THE RIVER. Prospective Improvements. The com ing spring will open with brilliant prospecs lor Camden. , There are a namber of improvements projected, including several business structure-', and heavy contracts tre already made for the erection of dwellings in various parts ot the city and suburbs. A company ol capitalists has been loruaed with the view of supplying ihe increasing demand for houses. It is said they will put up about one hundred this year, and will add from year to year to meet the require ments of our growing city. Mr. Garrison will alto build a row of hou-.es on his grounds in North Ward; and several of our citizens, in each of the Wards, will add to the number. Tn.s spirit of enterprise will extend over tho citv line, and inluFe new life into Knighnton; and on the east s:dc of Brace road, over the city line, James llcnrj, Esq., ha just completed a splondid resi dence near the Newton school house, In which vicinity several houses were built lasd, year, atid moie are contracted lor. Altogether, the build ing prospects Of Camden are very encouraging for the coming year. Enlarging the City Bounds. The pro priety of enlarging ,the city bounds, by embrac ing all the suburbs within the corporate limits ol Cnmden, 1s freely discussed and waiinly advo cated by a number ot our citizens. Several pro pontons in regard to the line have b;:en ma le, and there seems to be more diversity of opinion upon this question than upon the necessity of' cousolidstion. One line advocated is to take in all west of the Mount Ephniim load, making a continuous line to John M. Kaisrhn's propertv, even with the "Line Ditch." and continue to the bridge over the Bame. Others desire to strife a straight line trom Cooper's Creek Bridge south, and continue south until all of Centretulle and Stockton is embraced in the city limits. W'c believe our rural neighbors are by no means dcBirous ot the association. Needs Repairing. The. Camden County Court House is in a bad condition in niauy re spects, and needs immediate repairing. One of these delects is the bad arrangement of the Hues, which admit the loul odors trom tho sinks and prison cells into the Court Room, rilling the apartment with noxious vapors, which interfere materially with the transaction of business. These delects should be at once remedied, lor they make it unhealthy lor the .judges, and all who have business to transact during the ses sions of court. i Chicken Stealing. There scorns to be a gang of thieves prowling about the suburbs of ol Camden, whose special aims and business seem to be in stealing chickens, geese, turkeys, etc. A short time t ime feiuce one man lost about wentv-flve turkeys, which he mver recovered. Very little mercy in shown to these depredators when caught ami convicted, un oiouaay one ol them took a voyage to Trenton, under the care and guidance ol the Sheriff, where he has been assigned to special duty for a year in tho State penitentiary.
