flagration at Sixth nnl Chesnut streets, yester
day and this morning, to view to ruins. No.
603 and o6, tho four-story nrown-stone store,
owned and o!Ctipicd by Messrs Rockhill & Wil
son as a clothing hoiine, was hadly damaged in
the upper part, and the whole structure was
deluged with water. Tbn stock was principally
removed, and was thereby somewhat injured.

Sunday School Festivals. Tho Sun
day School ol the Tabernacle Baptist Church
held its festival on Monday eveniujr. Tho ex
ercises commenced at Bevn o'clock, when a
beautifully appropriate address was made by
Ilev. G. A. l'eltz, Pustor of the Church, after
which the pupils, nearly tiv3 hundred in num
ber, enpnped in Bineiiijr, for tho correct execu
tion of which this school hits beenso well trained
by the assistaLt superintendent, J. M. Evans,
Esq. The BChool-roorn was tastefully decoiateu
witn evereicens and appropriate inscriptions,
aud after partaking of au inviting entertainment
tho scholars separated.
The Robert Kaikcs Sunday School held their
festival yesterday, at the Mechanics' Institute,
Filth street, below Washington. The tables
Xwere bountifully supplied wiib. pound cake,
apples, and cornucopias tided with candies and
otter delicacies, in adddition to w hich ice cream
was furnished in ETcat abundance. During the
afternoon ' addresses were made by Itev. Dr.
Brainerd, Rev. Mr. Toland, and Mr. Scott. A
similar demonstration was held by the Lutheran
Sunday School, in Christian street, neur Sixth.
Operations of a Swindler. Yesterday
afternoon an individual known as James Burns,
alias George Vilon, was taken into custody
upon the charge of hivma; robbed and swindled
a number of persons 'who, through sympathy,
had endeavored to befriend him. A short time
since Mrs. llaray, of the tirm of Hardy ft, Gar
nail, dry poods dealers, met the defendant; he
told Mrs. Hardy a very touching and apparently
truthful story In reeard to his circumBtance3,
and so gained the sympathy of Mrs. Hardy that
she became responsible lor his board, and even
tually gave him a situation at six dollars a
week. In return lor tho kindness of the tirm,
he robbed them of hosiery, jewelry, chenille
sleeves, etc., and left, keeping out of the way
tor several weeks. He was also identified by
Mr. George Kevin, of the firm ol Thomas Webb
& Co., grocers, as having obtained Irom them a
lot of groceries, under the pretense that thoy
were for a lady customer on Eighth street.
Presbytery of Philadelphia. This
Presbytery, the oldest in the United States,
from which the General Assembly of the Pres
byterian Church originated, held its stated quar
terly meeting yesterday, in the West Spruce
Street Church. A petition was received for the
organization of a new church at Media. Inter
esting statements were given concerning the
prospects of the proposed church, and the im
portance of occupying this inviting Held; after
which the Rev. Dr. Breed, Rev. Messrs. Dale and
Sproull, and Mr, John Cochran were appointed
a committee to organize a church according to
the prayef of the petitioners, as soon a .JIhe way
be clear. A new church enterprise has also been
undertaken bv the Presbytery in West Philadel
phia. A valuable lot has been secured, and a
temporary building is now in progress for tho
use of the congregation until a church can be
erected.
Railroad Improvement. The Reading
Railroad Company contemplate placing four
tracks on their road, two tor passengers an! two
for fi eight. They have now three tracks over a
good portion ot the road. The company has
recently made valuable purchases of property at
Bridgeport, opposite Norristown, at Consho
hotken. PotUtown. and other way stations, with.
the intention of erecting large passenger and
freight depots at these points, very neavy pur
chases of real estate have been made in Reading,
and the erection ot very extensive shops is now
in tiroirress and in Dart com Dieted. When all
the shops are completed they will extend a full
mile in length. It will require not less than two
1 years to complete this great improvement.
Upon the line there are several tunnels, two or
three of them of an extent as to incur an im
mense amount of labor and time.
Cases at the Central Station. On
Monday the Mayor received the annual report of
Alderman Jleitier, wno hears the cases at tne
Central Station. During 1805 2012 cases were
dinpocd of, being an increase ot 70 over the
year 1804. The amount received lor iines.penal
tips and costs wan $I007'50. of which amount
$7-60 was paid over to the City Treasurer. Of
the cases disposed of; 7J8 were for vagrancy and
drunkenness; 3."(1 for larceny and attempts; 238
lor assault and battery; 118 misdemeanors;
48 false pretenses; 43 for burglary and attempts;
39 for conspiracy; 22 for riotine: 28 for receiving
ptolen goods ; ti lor murder and infanticide; 69 for
larceny ana picitmg pocgets.
The New Directory. It is very Impor
tant that we should have a correct and complete
Directory of Pnlladelphla. Indeed, it is (
more Importance, especially to business people,
than many have the faintest idea of. Tne pub
lisher should employ canvasssra in every ward
or district who are resilient thre, and who will
hence have some knowledge of the community
in which, they are appointed to operate. In
some Instances heretotore they have been
totally ignorant of the people amoug whom tnoir
duties lay, and depend mniuly upon children
and servants for their m'orniu-.on.

be as much a favorite this winter as it was lat-t.

A "Profe?sional" Committed. Georse
W. Kern was committed under the ninety day
law vesterdnv alternoon. Tho prisoner wa3 ar
rested at an early hour In the nioiulug, standing
with a group of persons at Sixth and Chesnut
ttreets, while the ore in tha', locality was raping.

Suicide. Samuel II. Suerron. aged 45
years, committed suicide yesterday at his late
residence, No. 13 Lctitla street, by taking a dose
ci laudanum.
TrrE Board of SunvK rons. The Board
of Surveyors met on Monday lor organization.
The new members nro Chnrlcs H. Closer Second
Distiict: William AUiertsoi. Scveuth District;
John II. Levering, Eurhtli District. A sever was
authorized to be constructed on Nineteenth
street, Irom Pennsylvania avenue to Green.
The rules which governed the old Board
were adopted lor the povcintnent of the new.

Mondays ol each month, as belore.
Deaths at the IIosriTAL. Henry King,
inlured by the cxolosionof a shell t the I'enu
Treaty Iron Works died at the Hospital. An In
quest will be held this oltcrnoon. John MeKenna,
injured on the 2Vfh nil. by tho explosion of a
blast in West Philadelphia, also died on Monday.
The Coroner will hold an inquest to-morrow.
John O'Kanc, injured on the 2;ld ult. by belntr
thrown from a wagon at Fourth and Coates, died
on Monday.
Brewers' Association. Tho annual
mee'ing ot the Brewers' Association of the 8ate
of Pennsylvania took place last evening, Fre
derick Collins, Esq.. In the Chair, Wilson Abbott,
Esq., Se.crctirv. The gentlemen notuing oiiico
were re-elected. During the evening a number
of toasts were drunk, and epeeches aptir print,-
to the occa'ian were made. The company sepa
rated at a lae hour.

Merryles hud a hearing yesterday at't-rnoon,
charged with receiving stolen roods. The resi
dences of fllr. Montgomery anil air. aicuoiruu,
rota buck of No. 1441 Shippen street, ha I been
entered and robbed of a large quautity of cloth
lap, and tome of the stolen property was oll'ered
in pledge by the accused. She was bound over
to answer.
Market Rents. The Commissioner ol
