Something about Stamps.

may be gathered from some statistics concerning
stamps, which are furnished by a New York
correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette. The
contract for furnishing the stamps was given in
1861 to the National Bank Note Company, which
now annually supplies 220,000,000 more stamps
than in the Brat year of the contract. Duhng
the present year the Company has already fur
nished Government 400,000,000 stamps, and the
demand has lrequently exceeded a million and a
bait per diem; the largest number ever deliv
ered in one day being 6,023,895. The consump
tion of stamps of ditterent values maybe under
stood from a statement of the proportions manu
factured in the month of March, last, when there
were delivered to the Government ot

The value represented by these stamps is
$3,207,199-50. The same writer says that the
entire number of etamos supplied bv the Na-
. tional Bank Note Company up to the present
, time is one billion three hundred millions. Of
: course, to meet a demand so vast, the presses are
sometimes run constantly nlsrht and day. and
to avoid error in accounts, a daily balance of
1 tne business is struct, it is stated to the
credit ot the Company, that in iurnishing the
immense number ot tne stamps mentioned
representative of a value of $40,000,000 not a
.single loss involving censure to tne company
bus occurred. Not the least surprising lact ot
tne wnoie is that tne stamps are printed, peno-
rated, gummed, and packed (for delivery from
the Corcpany's otlice ti all the post otlices in the
tuitea btates) lor twelve cents a thousand. The
Oompuuy has promptly met all the demands
upon it at mis rate, wnen the pnc'B ot mate
rial have lrequently involved an actual loss la

The New British Parliament.
' The Financial Reform Alnuinack (in England
they will spell "almanac" with a le) gives an
analysis of the new Parliament from which we
gather the following:
, The House of Lords consists ot 433 members.
of whom 231 are classed as conservatives. 184 as
liberals, and twenty as of politics undefined. Of
peers oi tne realm wno are minors, tnere are two
-dukes, three marquises, eleven earls, and four
barous. The Irish representative peers sit for
Jife; the Scotch are elected only tor the duration
of each parliament. Three peers are ot the
blood-roval.
The House of Commons has six hundred and
thirty-eight members, but three ot them have
died since the last elections Lord Palmerston.
Colonel Watkits, and Mr. Trebume. The Libe
rals numbered three hundred and sixty-six, and
the Conservatives two hundred and ninetv-one.

Tk.e witty and versatile Kdrtiond About has Just
published in l'ans a volume on L,lie Insurance,

treats a dry, statistical subiect wuh a pleasant
play of fancy. In ono curious passage he con
cludes that lor every man whose lit'o is iusured
in r Tan re tnere ate seven thousand insured in
England; and yet there ar certain circum
stances that would render the practice of life
insurance of particular advantage to Frenchmen.
ror example, unaer tne ircu;n lawoi succes
sion the proprietor of a landed domain, a mine,
or a house ot business, if he desire that it should
survive btm, would do wisely either to be con
tent with one child in which case be runs the

else to insure his own life for an amount suffi
cient to buy out the interests ot bis other child
