Rev. Dr. T. J. Conant delivered a discourse

Not long since, a young man in Havana a
negro slave was discovered to possess great
talent, and, in lact, to be a poet. Some of this
nninstmcted slave's poctiy is wry line. His
name is Ambrosia Eehemendiu. and he bids lair
to rival the tauious colored burd oi Matan.as,
Flacido. A subscription wag immediately
started, and the owner contributed with nearly
half the marketable value of the poet. The rest
was soon made up, and the poet is free.
Two youths in Pans were admirers of an
actress at one oi the Boulevard theatres. The
i other night, as ill luck would have it, they were
both at the theatre, and both Hung one franc's
worth ot tlowers to the oblect of their affections.
The young lady took up only one of the bouquets,
whereupon tho slighted swain called out the

General Early writes from Havana (Decem
ber 18) to a city 'journal, to deny that he is an
applicant for Executive clemency. The General
adds: ' have neither mado nor authorized
such application, and would not accept a pardon
from tho President of the United Stares if gra

Btrictioiis of any kind. I have nothing to regret
in the course pursued by me during the war,
except that my services were not of more avail

Pine creek is looking up. The "Red Well'
of the Walter Scott Company, produced within
forty-eight hours, last week, by actual measure
ment, one hundred and eight barrels. Allowing
eight barrels for shrinkage, it li safe to put it
down a filty barrel well.
