Philadelphia is not an ancient city, but i!
has endured long enough to witness the ex
tinction ol a whole species among its Inhabit
ants. Wu do not pretend to recollect so far
back as a friend of ours, who distinctly re
members, many years before ho was born, how
a watchman, poking the house, cried, ''Past
twelve o'clock, and Cohnwai.i.h is taken;"
but we do vividly recall the race of wat.-hmen
to whom this individual belonged, and wo
know flirt they disappear.. d.
It, docs not require, the years of one wvU
advanced In life, to recall the uppcurar.ci) of
thone nocturnal wanderers, who, in mullled
tones, snng out " ten o'clock and a star-light
night," or " three o'clock and a cloudy rn ; n
Ing." On a cold winter's night, there was
something exquisitely pleasant iu bearing those
drowsy voicss borne on the culm nir, and tlcn
in turning over and snuggling up in tho
coverlids as the sounds grew fainter ami
fainter in the distance, where- they were
informing other people of tho tluii of ulglit
and the state of tho weather. We suppose
that this feeling ol satisfaction may be
accounted for upon the principle which asserts
that the perception of eomfort is afforded by
contrast with some one elue's misery. But
we think that the enjoyment of comfort can
be accounted for moro charitably and philo
sophically, by ascribing it. to involuntary con
trast with some condi ionof discomfort pre
viously experienced in our own prouer persons.
The watchman's voico iu Itself was not re
markable for its quality, so that the pleasure
derived from hearing it, could not have ben
