Irhnps tho most Kcicutilic of tho raco of nvt
ninists formed in tho estatili-bmcnt of Mauds
lay, Field A Co., is .Joseph Whitworth, whoso
fame as a tool-maker Is known throughout tlin
world, lie has considerably Improved upon the
planiuK-nmchinc, in his "Jim Crow" machine, so
called because the cutter reverses itself and
works both ways, and in fact adapts itself to any
podtion to do its work. His name is, however,
more identified with rilled ordnance and soi.ill
aims, in the production of which he has no rir.il.
The fussion for accuracy of work which was
Instilled into him by his old master, has led him
to invent various machines for the attainment of
that end ; amors; othors, he has devtad a contri
vance by which a variation of a millionth of an
inch can be detected I
. In fact leviathan etiRinosof all kinds are turned
out by him, which work with all tho precision of
a chronometer; and tho value of tins accuracy of
practice Is not confined to his workshoi), as it ex
tends its inllucnco throughout the profession, and
Blat)li9hes a standard of excellence to which
other machine manufacturers, if they would
flourish, must nlso attiin. What a contrast doe-,
the work of tho machinists of the present day
present to thoso of a hundred years ago! At
that time, as Mr. Smiles observes, an engine of
any el.e, when onco erectod, required tho con
stant atttntlon of the engineer, w ho almost lived
beside it, in order to keep it iu working order,
inch was the friction or its parts and tho clumsi
ness of Its construction. At the present timo,
however, almost absoluto perfection of working
is obtained.
When the five thousand different pieces of thn
marine engines designed (or tho Warrior were
bronght together from;tlio dillereiit shops of tho
Messrs. l'enn, although the workmen who built
them up had never seen them before, yet such
was the mathematical accuracy of their lit, that
immedmtcly sloim was got np they began work
ing with the utmost smoothness. As a new born
child, linmi'duitely it enters the world and ex
pands its lungs, begins to slreteh its limbs, so this
gigantic engine, us soon as steam bewan to expand

With tl,e smoothness and case of a thing of life. J
it nun iu nu iiiipcssimo to estimate the gain

we had to depend npoa the old hammer ami file,

cur n.ochanical art could keep paco with tho
requirements of our rapidly increasing popu
lation; and commodities of all kinds that spring
from the skilled hand would soon reach a fabu
lous price. Now it is tho brain tlut works; the
mechanician in his study increases a thousand
fold the lingers of the seamsircss with his se.ving
mucbine, builds Meets of bo its (by tho American

would have formerly taken years, and manufac
tures rilles stock, lock, and barrel without
human tiuiters coming in contact with them
after ihu wood end iron are carried int tho
workshop. l'erhnps the Government miun
ftciory of rilles at Entield Is one of the most per

ence ; and tho hundreds of machines which go to
build up this most perfect military tool ol ihc
day have an automatic action s perfect, and
bile, cut, lile, drill, and plane with such marvel
lous intelligence, quickness, und care, that one
rannot for a moment help thinking that tlie hu

not at all np to the work demanded by tho pre
sent dge. Yet these unerring digits, which now
do our daily work, wero rot in existence sixty
years fcgo, and our ten fingers wero tho slaves

Yon must have remarked th obstinate silence
which both the English papers and tho French
ministerial journals observe on the subject of the
political relations which exist between the Cuhi
nets of London and 1'ari.s. Are we to infer from
this fact that the communications between the two
(J. vernments Bre not so frequent as they formerly
were, and that reserve lias succeeded the active
relations which were. estu. dished between the two
Cabinets uiur the faiiuiu of the Conference of
Ixiiidon i Certuiuly not; the siurble explanation
is that there no luiiK' cx tt any throaienint?
questions admitting oi uo delay ; and that, on the
other hand, as nothing hai happened to disturD
the good feelings which, without being a close,
alliance, have never ceased to exist since tho mis
sion of Lord Clarendon, it Is usclcus to speak of
a concert fur which there is ut the present mo
ment no occasion.
For some days past, however, the Itiforviews
between English and French statesmen have been
and still continue to be more frequent than before.
On Tuesday Earl Cowley transacted business
with M. Drouyu le Lhuys, and ou the same
day tho l'rince de la Tour d'Auvergne had a long
conference with the head of the Foreign Oili-e
in London. According to the most accredited
version, it is America which has formed tho sub
ject of deliberation both hero and on the other
side of the channel. Tue Lincoln election, the
speech of Mr. teward, that of Mr. Jetlerson
Duvis, the ndair of tho 1'fonda, the violent at-
tack of Mr. Webb in his letter to the llra.ilian
Minister un attack in which, though England
alone is designated, she is endeavoring to induce
France to look upon it as a menace te both coun
tries all this series of facts is of a nature to
' make tlie statesmen of England and Franco
' reflect.
1 The probability, therefore, is that the wish
both in Loudon and l'aris is to ascertain the
respective opinion of each Cabinet on peculiar
points which, under certain contingencies, might
give rise to a joint action on their part, liut
there certainly Las beeu nothing beyond this ;
, neither the question of intervention nor the
recognition of the South has, it it said, been
agitated. According, however, to what is aillnued,
Karl Kusseli at present feels greater sympathy
ior the cause of secession than was formerly the
i case. As, therefore, in France opinion has

This woman, blessed with n good share of

looks, distinct articulation, and a correct intona

The same remarks may, wuu propriety, be ap

must not be overstrained, and "explosive tones"
should be used with great c.ire. Tho action, too,
must not bo too violent or startling, as is too
olten the case with performers, especially in tho
