its defense." A regular mail and passemtor line
has lietn ke.t up between seceasla and the West
Jnrtla islands since the wur began, and although
blockaded by a score or more gunboats, scarcely
a week has passed but two or more block.de-ruu-Bcrs
have passed in or out from that port.

hand tens of millions worth of goods have been
run in, and a proportionate value in cotton and
turpentine run out. In fact, tho Interest of the
Confecerato loan in England has been reularly
paid by the sales of cotton run out of this port
lore. A Confederate otlicer, now a prisoner in
our hands, stated not long since that bu invested
a fow thousand dollars in the Htock of a
blockade-running company, and In eighteen

In the enrly months of the Rebellion S'Unvns
ton boasted half a dozen privateers, some tw
or three steamers, and a few Improvised ssiling
craft, who for a time annoyed and captured litt.e
coasting craft as they hugged in along shore in
pasting to and from the West Indies; but the
presence of a few well-armed gunboat soon put
a Hop to these petty piracies, and these craft
were convened into blockadc-ruuners, and for a
time tbey were busily employed io running out
cotton, turpentine, and rice. Finally the fnil
UK-amors were seized by the C.mfelera e War
Deparmcnt lor the transportation of trojps and
supplies, while a few of them were tilted tor State
gunboats.

The entrance to Wilmington harbor, or rather
Cape Fear river, it guarded by throe extensive
bars, known as the Western, New inlet, and
Alain bars. To enter bv the Western b.ir chan
nel in days gone by, it was custom try, when in
four fathom of water, to bring the high and low
lights on Oak Ulaud in range, and steer N K by

HBW INLET I1AR.
The cluinnol over the New Inlet bar is to tho
northward and eastward of the western bar
entrance, and is probably at the present time the
best and most preferable place of ingress. Yet
nndtr circumstances the most favorable it is dan
gerous to attempt the crossing of either of these
bars.

therefore the heavy screw frigates, whose draught
Of water would not permit them to outer the br
bir, will be compelled to lay ouiside and deliver
their broadaidos ; three of these slops and one
screw sloop and the side-wheel sloops alone
would throw over one hundred 9-inch shells at
oue broadside, which would be the heaviest fire
yet known iu our naval history. It seems as if
these vessels a'one would be able to drive the
Rebels from their works. The distance from
Fort Fisher to where the vessels would and cn
proliably anchor, is about two and uue-eigUth
miles. It must be smooth weather to do it. if
there is any sea on tbey could not work as well

enough to make the "dust" fly.

Yard in IM jo. Sho was one ot tlio cany paruci
pants in the war; and while being unable by her

many river lights, she has been represented by
her officers and crew in a number of brilliant en
gagements. She came home early this year for
repairs, and was extensively overhauled at tho
l'oitsuiouth, N. II., Navy Yard.
