A Paris correspondent of the Cologne Gaz-itu
gives the following Interesting particulars in
regard to a well-known gentleman, who had a
large acquaintance and many friends in this
country : "One of theso days un auction will he
beld of the property of the late M. Yattemare,
which will draw, no donht, a great many collec
tors of autographs and other curiosities, to th
Hotel des Ycntcs. M. Yattemare was a remark
able person, who, some thirty or forty years ago,
furnished the press with material for numerous
ntercsting paragraphs. Many of our renders
may remember him, under the namoof Alexan
dre, performing as rentrilo'iaist in the principal
cities of Europe, and exciting the admiration not
only of the ni usees, bnt of the most distinguished
men In uit, literature, and science. Ilia cour&c
of life was a very curious one. When a
young man be entered the French army as
surgeon, and fell into a Prussian prison
Iter tlio overthrow of Napoleon, lie lived
ievarul years at Berlin, where his agreeable per
son, bis amiable, gentle ten per, and bit rare,
aos ial talents, ait railed mu.h attention, and
opined ibo doors for him to the highest circles.
His extraordinary talent fur imitating different
voices, and to accompany them with appropriate
getticalaiion, won hnu to great a reputation that
b a tiienos advised blin, and he resolved accord
ingly, to moke a living by it, particularly as a
very honorable ft cling forbade him to take ser
vice In tbo Prussian army, or to oiler his services
to Ihe Ke-toraiion. Thus be liegan bis career,
visiting all. the larger theatres in Europe, perform
ing alone all the pans in the plays which bad e
prtShly been written for biiu. Iu the same play
keucudas peasant, olUccr, fruit-seller, coach
man, etudmt, cobbler, drunkard in short, in
the most heterogeneous parts. Leaving the
stage at one moment as a postilion, be en
tend it in the next as a young, bashful
maiden. Iu I .ngland he acted Ion y different parts
in cue evening. We see snob things froiiently
now-a-days without being astonished; but at
that time the spectators thought nothing mii 'h
abort of sorcery could enable hint to change his
o stumes, and to adapt himself to another part
at Mith miraculously shoit notice. He almot lu
vaiiub'y performed in public on the stage; In a
very few im-tauees only could he be induced to
show bis skill before private circles In the 'palaces
ol princes. One ol his great admirers was Sir
Walter Scott, whom he visited at Abb itsford,
in lt24, and who addressed hiin in a clever poem.
Old Illumenbai h was a wa in friend of his.
Ooibe became fond of him, and gavo him a
giailous letter of recommendation, which is
still to be found among his papers. Princes
and prinrefses liked him, and admitted
bim freiinently to their presence. Uuo of
bis principles was to taku no monoy pre
sent; consequently he received as marks
of favor rare autographs ami drawings, which,
in Ilia comae of time, have swelled le a con
siderable collection. He was not without higher
ampliations, and liked to act s medium of inter
national exchanges in mental productions ; he
tried to bring about what railways and other in
ventions are doing now, luat every country
should know and possess all the Important pro
tluclions in bcieuce and liu r ' ire of other coun
tries. He pursued the same o iject in the L'uiied
8 atcs of America, w heto he spent many years,
njo)iug the favor of the Uttmen. For many
years pas', Yattemare has lived retired, and
quiitiy at Paris, kolely in the Intercourse with
some fih nds, tor whose beneiii be sometimes re
called tbo adventures of his life, speaking of
(iu-ibc, lieck, Alexandre von Humboldt, Schleier
niHd.er, and other liUT.ir.t notabilities, with
grateful remembrance. As i his collection, it Is
rot now what it nsed to be, 'or his good nature,
bas oftm bien abused. U could not refuse
easily, and this generous disposition was well
known by'colleciors, who lni not spare his trea
sures; yet to abundant wiie those that much is
lift woithy of attention."
The Ukoinniso of tiii. Day. In different
, nations and ages, Ilia mod of reckoning the
beginning of the day have be. a various. Accord
ing to the computation of tli j ancient Syriins,
ha by Ion tans, Persians, and the Inhabitants of
Hindustan, the day commenced at the rinin of
tke tun; with the modi ru llr uks it is the same.
The Athenians, and other ancient inhabitants of
Griece, as well as the ancient au's, begun theirs
at turner; which modo is Mill followed by the
Jews, the Austiians. tue Hull iniuus, the Silesiaus,
the Italian?, and Chinese. The ancient inhabit
ants ot luily computed tin ird iy from midnight;
hii h moilu Is now in conini jn use with us and
all other Kuropo in nations, with the almve ex
options. The Mahometans .uliuliie from one
hciiiyht to another. The am i. nt KgvptiuiH datud
frum noon to ninu, wnicii mode ia at this day,
and bus ulwuys been, followed by astronomers ;
beeatike that m&tntU uf tuitu can be ascertained
with gnaler precision than :my other.
CoLOKiNdGAS Lir.in. An ingenious English
wian was lately pamittod to try some expert
nients at ihe gas-works at M ilines, in Belgium,
the most aucceasful of whion .vas the sudden ap
