Hum va Koniii'ttv . This morning two tn-li-

Francis Quinn, were before Alderman l'atchol
upon the charge of hirrhway robbery. About
hulf-;.a;l 10 o'clock last night, a youti3 man
tiumcd Villiaui Muilin Was stopped by three
men at T'enty-si.th ttreet and 'Washinttton avo-

had in his possession. Muilin lctitatcd some
what, upon which hi vns knocked itvn, nnd his
pockrts ritlcd of a po-ket book and a watcb. Ho
then jumped up und ran oil. lie got into a pas
senger car, thus getting ahead of tlio highway
men. At Twenty-third and Lombard streets he
met Olliccrs Taylor and Boner, and tho three
went buck in search of the robbers. Tho olilcers
spied Ibem under a lamp post engaged In exa
mining the booty they had obtained from Mullln.
Tho villains, noticing that they were watched,
started oil. They were pursued, but one of thetn
succeeded In mnking his escape. Tho other two
wro arretted, and gave the names mentinnod
above. They were committed for trial. High
way robberies nro of frequent occurrence in tho
western part of the city, and ato generally in
utiljtid iu by tho tew remaining menibeis of the
m toi ious old trtng of Schuylkill Hangers, nearly
allot' whom have been humor are now in the I'eni

to be committed that the perpetrators arc not
brought to justice, as in the present cave.
Lithk.uiy So' iv.m s. It may not bo known
to the generality of tho young men of pur city
thnttlnrc has for years existed, in a fl ini-ishing
condition, a number of societies formed and
conducted entirely by yonng men, whose aim is
to cultivate their love of literature and powers
of debate. Aliout seven years ago such unions
were remarkably fjshionablc, but like other
niaiiit.s it di.sapi eared, and must of our eitiuus
supposed that all tho or-ani.ati ins died with
thiir popnlnrity. Scierul bf-ve, knwover, for,
yiuts lontitiucd to exist; u:,d there are, at the
present time, four such, in a tlourishiug eon
uiti n.
There has been iMe'y formed a new nsaociation
which bids lair to tiko its piae at the head ol all
such literary unions. Tho members of the
llun boldt Literary Union, finding that it was
ensitrto re-create than to correct the evils of
their conslitution, disbanded their society, and
ut once took steps towards the formal ion of
mother. A large number of new members have
joined, and the I'hilolatheau promises to bo a
decided institution in our ci y. It meets on
Friday evming, at No. lb!l North Tenth street,
when; its Second meeting will be held this cvoniug.
All the young men of our city would do well to
connect tin m.-cives with some Mich association.
They lire always welcome, and will, we doubt uot,
tind them both interesting and instructive.
Tun Skaumo Sfason. Our skating parks aro
now in excellent order, and doing a good busi
ness. Our city railroads carry passengers directly
to these ponds, and ono is situated at the end of
almost every railroad. The advantage ol these
ponds.- is their safety, the depth of water boiot;
tutlicient to make good skating, but not sullleient
to endanger any one if he should break through,
though tho dauber of breaking through is much
uimiLbhcd by ihe shallowness of tho water, and
consequent greater thickness of tho ice. Tho
moonlight t ights afford a hue opporiunity for iu
dulgirn the teste for this exercise. Tue parks in
operation are tho Philadelphia, at Thirty -lirst and
Wan.ui streets, and the Gray's l'Vrry.
The I-'aiumovmt Dam. Councils were asked
yesterday to make an appropriation for tho pur
pi se of m iMitig the Chief Knjinccr of Water to
make repa rs to the eastern end of the Falrraonnt
dam. An examination made a few days since
showed that the cribwork which supports the
nam had given way lor a distance of thirty-two
feit and lilf cn feet in depth, and that tho dam
ut this point was slowly settling. Tho work of
repairing the damage will bo commenced imme
diately. F.xTiNoviKiiiNo Finns nv Contuact. An
illort will bo made at the next mooting of
Councils to reorganize the Firo Department in
such n way as to reduce the expenditures of said
Lipiirment. An ordinance is now being prop ired
by direition ol the Committee of Councils, which
provides that the Mayor shall enter into a con
