Interesting among them, nor the lcustastonlshiog
In the result it discloses, is thut relating to Han
kow, The total valne of the trade at this rirer
line port was between seven and eight millions
Sterling namely : 0,020,317 taels in imports, and
12,741,008 taels In exports. The whole of this
must, of course, not lie attributed to foreigners,
though tticy monopolize a very large
hare. Two articles alone shirtings and opium
contribute nearly 2,OiiO,OIX) taels towards
the total of imports, in the proportion of
1,1V!0,U)0 taels the former, and 73O,UU0 taels the
litter; and if 2,300,(100 taols' worth of copper
ci b be exported, by far the larger proportion of
tun remainuvr is made op by articles of foreign
matjuracture. Cloths of various kinds figure for
100,000 taels, and long ells for St.0,000 taels;
bl-u-k pepper lor 171,1100 taels, and brocades for
100,000 taels. Those who may still regard
sharks' fins as a uiytb, and birds' nest soup as
exit-tit g only in the imagination of travelers,
may be interested to learn that no less than 4000
turns' worth of tins and 3500 t iels' worth of nes a,
were imported Into Hankow during the lat
tear. Funcy 1,20(1 sterling for birds' nests at
ont city only. Among the exports, tea of course
takes the most prominent position, rignrlng for
no leas than 7,000,000 taels, or 2,200,000 ster
lirg, and this U the only article of produce which
attracts the. eye in running down the list. The
remaining 2,0011,000 taels are all made up of com
paratively small sums, the most worthy of note
being wocd oil, which (inures for 800,000 taels,
katllowerU44,0:K) taels, and tobacco 900,000 tae s.
Among other items, "walnuts" figure fur no less
than 1 1,000 laels, and "tigers' bones" for 202 taels.
l.leren. pounus of duck feathers are valued at
twelve shillings, and twenty pounds of "human
hair'' figure lor three taels, though for what
earthly pur, o. e a Chinaman's hair, whieh is a
triile courser than a booe's, can be niudc to serve,
it is dilticull to conceive.
This large tralVlc, of course, employs a number
of ves-els, principally steamers, in carriage, and
In this point, hi d in this only, in China, American
enterpiiae outstrips Uritisb, as the number of
ships plying on the river which fly the Shirs and
Siripes nearly double thoso which can boast the
Union Jack. Altogether the steamers running
on the ang-tze paid 1,1 o.ono taels lor tonnage
dues at Hankow alone during the p ist year. The
total inward tonnage of every descrip'lon entered
at the port during that period was 1!1,1.', tons,
and of outward ships 2i)l,lri. Or this, in the.
aggregate, 103.000 was British, 270,000 American,
and 3M7 ( '.) French. Out of this hitter total
'2307 loBsweie represented by native junks sailing
unoor pn-ncu protection, leaving 11 oil tons repre
sented liy i-even small lorchos purely French.
1 am not anle to contrast these results with
those exhibited by the previous year's custom
returns, but am assnrrd that they show a con-
nuerable Increase, taken by themselves thev
are a sulllcient proof ot the large trade whi 'b is
now carried on in foreign shipping at a port which
was vmited for the first time by Lord Klgin only
six j ears ago.
A Vrlcrua Printer.
William H. Kdcs, editor and proprietor of the
Piscataquis Observer, at Dover, in this State, is
the oldest printer in Maine. A correspondent
has recently written a letter to the Ilangor ll'Aiy,
from which we condense the following items :
In 1808 Mr. lidcs worked on the Kennebec
(iautte, published at Augusta. The same year
he worked on the liangor Register; in 1822 he
worked on the Hallowcll Gazette; in 183 ou the
Advertiser, In this city, at the lime F.rastus Brooks
was th "devil." Mr. lirooks is now one of the
der oted editors of the New lork Awre.u.
In 1823 Mr. Kdes assisted in starting the first
paper in Somerset county, called the Journal, at
Norridgewoifk, aud made bis advent as editor.
He soon sold out, exchanging the chair for the
case.
Twenty-six years since he stand the first Pis
cataquis county sheet, nnder the name of the
lltrald, merging it into the farmer, and now
known as the tihserrrr.
For the past forty years he has scarcely been
" away from bis case," save for meals or neces
sity rest ; now sets nonpareil without spectacles;
edits, composes, "works the paper oil," and is
bale aud hearty for his age; keepeth time by a
watch, an heirloom nearly one hundred and ten
years old, and is in possession of a " stick" used
by bis pratidtathcr, Benjamin Edes, a fellow
workman of KiankHn He is a typo of the fourth,

TIIKMH Hlta Of IVOItt,
No one has yrt stopped In to claim the r "ward
of $lo, (H O u.lered by a responsible parson In this
city for the discovery of an artificial su'istltiitc
fur ivory, posi -ing nil the Important properties
of that beutititiil piodncl ol rnluro. The Ameri
can Inventlvo genius is for onco balked. Only
two patents have ever bten Issued in this
country for the production of artlnVlul ivory,
and hoi tin i nt them bus made its way to pnbllc
recognition. The same is true of a'l the foreign
patents for the same purpose. The diitlculty
Is not in rccombinlng the well known elo
menta which enter Into the composition
of Ivory, I'ttt In putting thorn together with
the tenacity of coherence belonging to the tusk
as it grew from the elephant's head, and In pro
dueii.g tho HUlity of density and weight in all
fnirts of the composition which Is so necessary to
lilliard-balls, and other articles made of ivory.
No amount of hydraulic pressure can impart the
solidity and toughness derived from the natural
cellular growth. I bis is the dilllcultv to be over
come. When it is surmounted, the elephants
can have a holhlsy. 17 mil thru, they mint bo
slaughtered at the rata of ,50,000 a year to keep
the world In billiard .balls.
Home day they will become extinct, and known
only in the picture books and museums, like the
meirntiierium, the ichthyosaurus, and olhnr pro
digies of the antediluvian world. The Yankee
Invention will bo spurred on by necessity, and
l et haps prove itself cipial to the occasion of sun
plying a fabricated ivory. Klephams, however,
are not the only source of ivory, although tha
obi' f one. Inferior qualities can be obtained
Iroiu the tee'h and tusks of the walrus, and the
norwhal, and the mnsjeating teeth of the sper
maceti wbulc. Hones and rusks of extinct spe
cies of mastodons and elephant are picked up
on the banks ot rivers in Northern .Siberia, where
the intense and constant cold keeps them from
decay. Atuhat period of the world's history
the animals which bore about those tusks lived,
and how it happens that they nourished up there
where the elephants of the present day would
free .c. or die Irom starvation, ure among tho
most curious questions yet propounded and un
answered. It is a fact well authenticated, and
known probably to many of our readers, that a
line specimen of the primeval elephant, in propria
pirsema, llesh, bones and all, was thawed out of
one of the grout icebergs or mountains of the
Northern sea. The skeUton was preserved en
tire, and is now in the imperial museum at St.
Petersburg; thcMlesb had been wholly or partly
ente n by wolves at the time of the discovery.
Home of tho fossil tusks, droppod thousands of
years ago, ure over 10 (nut long and weigh 180
pounds, and uro of line grain und sound texture
throughout. They furnish a large portion of the
ivory supply for Ku-sia and Northern F.uropc.
Vegetable ivoiy answers well for small articles
like t ar ornaments, bosom pins and sleeve but
tons. The supply of tins is abundant. It is the
hardened secretion of a milky tin id in the fruit of
a species of the palm, common in South America.
It is more li:ib!e to chip and tarnish than uuimal
Ivory, but, in other respects, closely resembles it.
The fruit of the Dom palm, In the K ist, furnishes
also a vegetable ivory which is used extensively
in making beads, rosaries, und other articles.
From elephants to rats is quite a.jump. But to
the mind of an ivory dealer, the mention of the
one generally suggests the other; for the rut plays
an important part in the ivory trade. In ware
houses where tbe tusks are stowed away, this
little rodent gnaws into them just enough to dis
close the quality of the ivory, which otherwise
might lie concealed from the purchaser. How
this happens Is stated in an interesting article on
"Rats," in Mr. Bueklund's "Curiosities of Natural
History," irom which we extract ns follows:
There is a curious but little known fact, which
well illostrates the ravages which tho rats can
inflict on a bard substance with their little sharp
teeth. Many of the elephants tusks imported
into London for the use of the various workers in
ivory are observed to have their surfaces grooved
into small furrows of unequal depths, us though
cut out by a very sharp. edged instrument.
Surely no man would have taken the trouble to
do this, for what would be the prolit of his labor ?
The rats, however, have found out there is some
thing worth working for, or else, clever fellows,
they would not have used their chisel-like teeth
with such cirect. They have discovered which
tusks oontuin the most gelatine or animal glue a
sweet and delicious morsel for their dainty
palates; and, having gnawed away us much us
sullea their purpo-e, nave ictt ine rest tor ttic
ivorr-cutter; he, for his part, is neither unable
nor unwilling to profit by the fact marked out by
the rats teeth ; lor ivory which contains gelatine
is particularly valuable ror many purposes.
It is a curious tact, as narrated to me by Mr.
Jacques, the ivory-turner ot liutton Oarden, that
the rats gnaw the Airican ivory, moro especially
that which Is called green ivory, on account of
its amber tinted, transparent color. Indian ivory
they will not, and do not touch ; there is not
enough gelatine in it to make it worth theirwhilo
to be at the irnubio or gnawing, tven ot the
Afiican Ivorv they touch only the tip and lower
extremity, and why f because it is the purest, and
densest, and softest part oi mo tusit.
N ben this aruoeon rats nrst appeared in llent-
ley's Miscellany, I stated thut the ivory-turner
booses tbe rat-gnawu ivory to make his billiard-
balls ; and this statement was copied by the jn ir
trrlu ltrrii xr. but I have, since ascertained that I
was linstaiieii in uic met. i consume .nr. j iucs
upon the subject, and he tells mo that billiard
balls are mede only of Fast Indian ivory, that
which the rats never touch, and not of African
ivory, which tbey always do touch. IheAiricm
ivorv contains more moisture and gelatine than
the other kind; and this occasions the ivory to
shrink iudiying, and consequently the ball, when
turned, to get out of the round; it is, however,
very vuluuble to muke other articles, not billiard-
balls. Mr. Juques tens me mat toe trado nave
always given the alligators the credit of gnawing
the ivory, which is simply impossible, lor when
and where could they have the opportunity of
getting at the tuks r And even if they had been
gnawing, or rather champing at it tor an alliga
tor is not a rodent, or gnawing annual the marks
on the ivory would have been very dltferent to
those mude by the ruts. Mr. Juques confirms the
fact, thut where the gnawing has taken place,
the ivory has been "very transparent und of the
finest quality."
The rats are useful in an Indirect war to the
purchaser of ivory from another causo. Jfot only
is the fact of tbe rat's judgment in choosing g Kid
ivory, by making a meal of it, acknowledged aud
acted upon by the turner who wishes to get a
good bit of ivory, but the mark of his tejth will
show to the eye what the sub-tanee of tho ivory,
otherwise concealed under the external crust of
the tusk, is like whether good, bud, or indilfcr
ent. Many a turner will give the merchant a
higher sum fora tusk, If previous to the bargain
he will saw oil' the tip, that be may see moro of
the quality of the ivory, whether the tnsk is
sound throughout. Now if tho rat has beeu
gnawing, the turner dot's not make this request,
because in the grooves eaten by the rut he can
ne plainly what the fubvance under the external
coat I
t is.-.
