THE FltENCU AT MATAMORAS.
There appears to be a good feeling between the
in banks of the Kio Grande now. We tako the
following from the editorial correspondence of
the News :
The best nntler?tandtng exlits between the
Vwry established Oovernmcnt on the other skle
aid onr authorities, and there is no reason to ap
prehend that any further trouble will occur with
ear Mexican neighbors, provided the now Gov
ernment is suftiiienily strong to enfsreo its
ailhoilty and suppress the robbing parties that
aave so long committed their dcpredutious with
impunity on both banks of the Kio Grande.
A mutual exchange of courtesies has already
taken place between General Mejia and General
Drayton and their officers. The following is a
copy of the correspondence between the com
manding officers, which shows the friendly senti
ments entertained towards the Confederate Stales
by the Imperial commander:
IIlADQUARTKRS WlMTRRlf Sm-DlBTRlnT,
Browksvillk, September 28, l;i'4. To the Captain-General,
Thomas Mejia, Commanding, &c.
General : I have the honor of tendering to you
my high consideration, and at the same time to
express my gratification nt your arrival upon the
Kio Grande, where now floats the Hug of the Em
- pire, nnder whose folds we may expect that repose
and security so long denied to us on account of
the treacherous and unjustiliable warfure waged,
ha conjunction with the Yankees, against the
Confederation, by the former Provisional Govcr
lorof Tamaulipas, General Joso Cortina.
lint for the gallantry of our forcos in repelling
this combined attack, the Empire would at this
time have had, upon the left bank of the river,
bitter enemies, instead of worm friends. To-morrow
afternoon, at 4 o'clock, I will do myself the
honor of calling upon you with my statf, hoping
by that time to find yon in some measure relieved
from the more pressing duties of your responsible
position.
Permit me, General, to reiterate the assurance
f my high consideration.
(aligned) Thomas F. Drayton,
Brigadier-General Commandiug.
TIiadua'ARTRRH in Matavoras, September 28,
IBM. Mo. 073. General : 1 have received, at
this Instant, your congratulation for my arrival
en the right shore of the Bravo, whither 1 have
time to nlant the standard of the Kmpire.
The political significance of this Uag is known
to yon, General it means peace and progress
within dit country ; cordiality and friendly rela
tions in the exterior; protection to commerce and
Industry -.respect to property ; and the raostample
(aarantees to the cituens of all countries who
come to develop, in our territory, the fruits of their
tell. Yon can, therefore, rest assured as to the
teearity which yonr fellow-citizens will enjoy
hereafter on the right bank of the river.
