Forter,ln 1778, wrote an account of his voyage
around the world, nnd in it Ii" gave out, as the
result nf bis observation, tba" there were three
sources of light: 1. F.lc trle'ly, evolvcttiy the
friction of the ship on the wat. r. 2. Trnephos.

Various other theories, more or less true, were
started and received, but the question was so far
off a satisfactory solution in lNml.that the Society
of Favanta at Haarlem resolved to offer a prie
for the hist csf.ijr on "Tbe Cause of tho Phos
phorescence of the Sea." On this occasion, tho
dlirt rent explanations wero thoroughly gmo

TI e ho'pi.oreseence of the sea is dun to two
kindred chii-ih, one being tho light emi'te I by
certain living creatures which h ivo the lacultv
of becoming' luminous a faculty iaeidental to
the ilisel.ari.e of their vi al fiiiicions ; the other
being the lie.ht given out by the nodies sf tho
same eruitures w h 1 1 -1 undergoing tue pro ess id
deeotnpositiin. Winch of these exercises the
larger sharo in illuminatim: the ocean is vet un
certain, and the point is not, perhaps, verv ma
tot in I ; but what is more to the purpose is, that
among the former are to be found three distinct
genera, subiliv uled, in the c ise of infusoria, into
almost lidinite spi cies. Tnese three genera an)
the Acalcph.e (Mtdu'iP anil Cyanic fainllie-)
among y.nopbytts, certain mollu-ca and lulu airia. j
Ot the Aca!eplne, or Sea nettles, Mwnwiri I
uriulillam is the most remarkable. Ir is, when
fully grown, no laig. r than a pin's head, and yet
has a lustre w hich makes it almost as brilliant as
the brightest etar. It is more especially an in
habitant of the tropics, and is a great contributor
to the glory which the sea in th mo latiiudes has
over the waters of colder nones.
In 1MI, Tilisius di titiguished as many ns
twenty-eight sorts of me Justie, molliisca, and in
f a or in which were light yii lding, besides enume
rating nineteen Crustacea which had ihe same
property. But this is far from being a correct
estimate of ihe lusiroiis creatures. It is n it
known how many they are, and though more
accurate ideas can bu tormed of the iiuiimrii al
strtngth of tho two kinds first nien'loned, it
fcenis to bo no exaggeration to say that the light
giving intusoria are innumerable..
Kin enbeig managed to keep two luminous In
fusoria, taken from the Baltic, alive at Berlin for
two mouths, and he was euali ed to make very
ciosc oli-cr vatioiis upon the conditions nio-t
lavnrablu to the manifestation of their powers.
He found that when they wcro exhausted, and
eased to unit sparks, they renewed their (lash
ing on the addition of acids or of alcnhol to tho
sea-w ater in which they were living. Inthepho
locharis he discovered a cellular structure of a
v atinous diameter internally, which showed
some resemblance to the electric organ nf tho
vmnotiis and torpedo; and or It be says:
v uen tbe pnotoeliarls is irritated, in each cirrus
kindling and a gleaming of soparato sparks mav
bo observed, which gradually increase, and at
length Illuminate the whole cirrus, until tbo liv
ing Hume runs also over the back of tbe ncrcid-
ke nnnnnlcule, making It appear under a micro
scope like a burning thread of sulphur with a
greenish-yellow light. In tho Ommia hrmit-
phirrira, the numbi r and position of the sparks
correspond accurately, at tue inicnerifii oase,
with the larger cirri or organs which alternate
with them, a circumstance that merits special
attention. The manife-tutlon of this wealth of
liro Is an act of vuulity, nnd the whole develop
ment of light an organic vital process which
exhibits itself in infusorial uniiuals as a mo
metitarv spark of light, and is repeated al ter short
intervals ot rest.
Krom this Humboldt dedncci the existence of
a niaencto-eleetric and light-generating vital pro
cess in o tier classes or annuals, iisnes, insects,
molluses, and aeulepbie, vc. ; be contrasts fie
coiidi'ious necessary to the development of lumi
nosity in tbe glow worm and other insects sur
rounded by air with those accompanying the ex
hibition of lieht, by hi a animals', and considers
that the lormcr may be due to the clieiiiie.il coiu-
insition of tho luminous unlit cnused, wtuie tun
la'tei- is duo to a niaincto elec ric ugoncy. Hdw
lar these speculations may lie home out by tac s
it is not our intention to in iiilre. buftico it to
say that living creatures of inliiiiiesluially small
d im usums are, in the exercisoof their vl'al func
tions, very large contri nilors to tho beautiful
phenomenon under consideration.
But sometimes, even with high magnifying
power, it is not possible to discover auy animal
cules in the glowing water j and yet, where a
wave breaks in foam against a rock or the side of
a ship, Hushes of light become visible. This ap
pears to be due to the decomposing tihrcs of the
dead creatures, esieciany ot tuo monusca, wnicn
are dlllused in groat a'luuuauco lurougu tuo

Hut If Ills life and works were tbe outrowiti
and rcUictlon of bis iigo, hU death hai, in a sad
der sense, been a eacrillce to its peculiarities.
Living, as we all do now, at ten times the rate of
our forefathers, those who supply oar intellec
tual food mast tax themselves to meet our de
mands. We reud ten times as much, nui there
fore we must have tun times as mu.-h written
and printed for as; we pay ten times as much, and
therefore artists and HUthors are tumptod to ten
times the exertion, f or, unhappily, wo uo not
pay in proportion for the great work to whieh
tnu cure unu moor 01 a urerniio iiare in-en k'
the perfect work which will live through all time,
like the "Iliad" or the Apollo. Ilut what we are
taper for is tiie hbuliow novelty, the sharp com
ment on dttlly life, the wurk thut fatigues not the
understanding, out striken in a moment, ana may
at once be dismissed. 80 the limit lafmr et mora
docs nut pay, and, as a consequence, it is not
civen. Tertians but lor this f.ital temptation,
Leech might have adiled some enduring work of
art to the iaileries or nisc mutry. uur consola
tion is that he re ached, if not so tiluli, at least a
wider nubile. He met the popular hunger, and
supplied it with light and evanescent but healthy
food. Only in doing this ho lost his own lite, ai
so many another aitist and man of letters lias
clone ot hue yettis. 1 or It s. ems as if the creative
faculty were that which kills the fuiient. Tho
lawyer lives long, though he wnrksas bard as the
poet, for many more houri a day. Itut tho men
of imagination, such as all artists and all literary
men must be more or lets, fall soon ami fait.
Would they but npi nd some of that time which is
now spent in Inventing new character, now
scenes, new stories, new arguments, in the dull
filoelding routine of revising, recasting, and pol
shliis, their works might live beyond the year,
and many a u-ctul year would be added to their
own lives. Ilut It is fruitless to preach prudence,
or a noble ambition, when the hope of su Iduit
wealth is tbe lure. We call for so much of litera
ture and art that we cannot have It so gnod as it
miphfbe, and we pay so bghly for novelty that
we kill our authors and artists wheu their years
are still greeu. London A'ewt.
