TUB WAISTCOATS.
IIito is one odd item of old clothes that has a
singular history. There are still a ccrtuin class
in the community addicted to the use of silk

found among the well-to-do tradesmen of coun

After adorning the responsible corporation of
some provincial grocer until he is thoroughly

of this inscrutable law of revolutions in dros.i,
from the Middle Ages down to our own time.
AViiting and preaching ni;aint fashion have in
all tunc not only been perfectly oscles, but
made the wearer more determined to pt-r-evere
in it, however unseemly, ridiculous, or even dan
gerous to wear. Some days ago thico of the

such nn nttcnipt will be repeated in Hyde Par:,
for the simple reason that 110 lady would dream
of making such experiments in public. Men's
costume is naturally less exaggerated in form
than the dresses of the lair sex. It is al-o slower
in its Becular development. Hats, for lns-ancc,
ulthough from time to time slightly modified in
type, keep during a century the same general
form.
The eighteenth century was condemnod to the
ridiculous three-cornered hat; tho nineteenth is
doomed to the still uglier chimney-pot. General
Foy, writing 011 military costume, considered it
an immense boon for tho soldier the superseding
of the breeches by the trousers. He held that tho

As it is, we may fairly expect that the prevailing
fashion of enormously distended dresses is to
prevail during the rest of the century, in ajii'c of
ull its perils and Irs ugliness. Our grandmother
hud the doors of their houses raised and enlarged

Ksw Am.oys op Pit.vkii. M. religot, the
chtmist of the French Mint, has been making
experiments to ascertain how the lntrodcctiun of
zinc, or the complete substitution of zinc for the
copper in the new French coinage w hich was to
consist of 8:i. parts silver und loi parts copper
would affect the alloy; and he has discovered
that alloy of the legal standard, in which pan or
tho whole of the-coppcr was replaced by zinc, are
remarkably mullcuble, and when rolled are per
fectly homogeneous. They are of a beautiful
white color; but the binary alloy of silver ami
zinc is somewhat yellowish. The" fusibility of the
nine alloys is greater than the copper; they aro
very sonorous and elastic, mid if made brittle by
hiimmering, tho malleability is restored by heat
ing. The study of the atomic alloys showed that
equal equivalents of silver and .inc, or two equiva
lents of silver to one of zinc, gave mulloublo
alloys, while the compounds of one equivalent of
silver nnd two equivalents of zinc, and also of
two equivalents of nilver and three equivalents of
ilnc, are too brittle to be rolled, besides tho
recommendation of being cheaimr, the zinc alloy
blackens loss readily with sulphuretted hydrogen
than tho copper compound. An ulloy of 800 of
silver and 200 of zlno will keep Its whiteness in a
soltitiou of polv sulphide, which will rapidly
hlsckeu the legal alloy of copper and silver.
