In the upring of IS 19, while vinitin? a friouj in

not loo tlattcriiiftly, as a successful lawyer, smart
tot nnscriipnlnus, rcudy to take up the worst
ease, and noied lor always carrying his clients
through.
On entering the parlor, I was surprised to
find Id the charming and cracelul lady who re
ceivednsthe dramatic friend and confidant oi
"Jane Sl.orc," whose talent had bo impressed mo
at the Dormnce Street Theatre, who, fascina'ed
by the stage, and conscious uf dramatic p )Aor,
hnd obtained an enragement at one of the
Boston theatres, and who wa, for aiiout two
J'ars, earnestly devoted to her profession, when
Mr. Brr.ianiin Butler proffered his heart and
hand ana won her back to domestic life. I
toiDd that she still loved the art, and prevailed
on her to read me some of her favorite pis
sages in Kbakcspeure. r he read, I remoin'ier,
the prison scene in ittMiirt fur Metuure, with a
passionate pathos which made me half regret
that the smart Lowell lawyer bad won her
away from Melpomene and all her tragic glooms
:pl;ndors,
LaUrlnthe evening Mr. Butler came In from
bis office, ahd talked politics with mv friend the
Webster Whig. The political problems of that
day were far other than what they now are, though
their solution involved, more or less directly, all
the mighty interests of the eventful present. A
"Black Republican" at heart then, as now, I conld
not bnt feel that rale, half-and-half, pro-slavery
Republicanism of my friend, the Webster Whig, 1
had little weight before the more consistent logic
and downright Democracy of the Lowell lawyer.
As I listened to his terse and trenchant talk, I
did not ouite to much wonder that the young
actress had preferred him to Melpomene ; yet how
little could I then have fore.-ecn ihe Importaii'
and decisive part which that indomitable will,
that downright logic, were destined to play in the
greatest eontest for liberty ami law that ever con
voked a nation ! How little could I have foreseen
that the "smart Lowell lawyer" would becotnj
the terror of the slave power," the protector of con
trabands, and "the reformer of refractory cities,"
