The panic among tho audience wim pw it I r a
while, and It is marvellous that no one w h
killed or seriously Injured. Indeed, there ap
pears to have ih-cd. a fixed determination on
the part of the miscreant" who performed the
coward'y acts, to burn New York, either fur
the sake of plunder or revenue. And here tli.t
que.-tion naturally aiis Are not these incen
diaries tlie Kebel agent-, of whose coming we
were warned a lew weei since by Tt1rlimoiil
newspapers? They predicted that there would
be great flits In the North this fall, and they
urged on their Government to employ men lur
th purpose of burning down New York, Bos
ton, Buffalo, Chicago, and other lariio e'uiii
North and West.
This was a fuvoritc mode by which tho Free
Slatw were to be brought to term by .Ikkk.
Davis. Many of our citizens refused toeuter
tain the thought that tho Uebel Government
for single moment would li.-ten to such a
pn position. Cut when we revert to the his
tory of last winter and sprint;, and read of the
terrible work of destruction and death cane 1
by hired Incendiaries on tho Mississippi and
Missouri rivers men who were nctna'ltf jial'l
out of the Jlebel Treasury for firin? steam
boats, and destroying the lives not only of
men, but of women and children we are
bound to conclude that Davis and his C il:
l Start not only willing, but ready to aece l.'
to any proposition which their friends in the
Horth may make, which has lor its object the
burning of our cities.
The Richmond papers claim that it would
be carrying tho war Into Africa; that it is
perfectlyjustifl-.tble; and that their Govern
ment could well atlord to creute a secret fund
for hiring persons In the North to further the
villainous design. Two millions of dollars, it
was suggested, would be sufficient to level our
principal cities In ashes, and tho Confederate
authorities were advised that this outlay would
prove a most profitable Investment.
There can be little doubt but that such a plan
has met the approval of Davis, and that New
York last night was kept In constant alarm by
bis hired minions. It behooves the authori
ties of all our cities to be on tho lookout
There is no assurance that rhilad-ilpliia, I3.il-
timore, Boston, and other places do not now
harbor the sneaking scoundrels who are paid
by the Rebellion to set our churches, our fac
torles, out stores, and our homes In flames,
rorewarned, forearmed. ThWadeAphiVs turn
may come next. Let us be prepared, and let
every suspicious character in the city have a
watch set on his whereabouts and his tu ive

with force and grace, and apH-arto advantage
in history, a'ways struck us as b'-ing verj
masculine women, and masculine women are
ns distasteful ns elfemlnate men. We cannot
help thinking that the best things they did in
their stirring times would have been better
done by the right kind of individuals of the,
other gender. In our own age and country,
Lr"V Stunk and her Imitators may talk
prettily from the Mump, but a pantalooued
politician, w'uh a bolder grasp of practical
ideas and stronger lungs to address a crowd,
Is lietter fitted for the purpose than tho most
eloquent leuinlo, with her fanciful theories and
silvery utterances. The mass of our people
laugh at the proposition to give women
ttccces to the ballot-box; and us for the public
offices, the greedy throng that scramble f ir
them would not tolerate the thought of crino
line coming between them and their hop.-s.
It women Vi ill concern thenis dves about polit

them confine their speech-making and wire
pulling to the circles of private lite. Rut in a
land renowned for (he intelligence oflts wivet,

to keep the fairer half of creation from
mingling in the mazes of politics, as it w o dd
lie to prevent them from concerning themselves
about matters of business, upon which depuu 1
their living und station in society. There we.e
always some tlircwd specimens of the female
politician at Washington, and they promise lo
increase in numbers and influence. They were
generally tho wives of prominent members of
Congress or the Administration.
Their position In the society ot the capital,
their known influence over their husbands,
anil the winning arts which accomp'isheJ
ladies alone can employ, secured for th'fin
almost unlimited success in whatever scheme
they originated or Ihvored. It Is not surprising
that the place-hunter, who finds his own efforts
to obtain the object of his search unavailing;
the statesman who want votes for the pas-
sage of a certain bill ; and the lobby member
who lnut a heavy pecuniary interest in procur-
ing a particular kind of legislation, should ;
have recourse to the potent possessors ot j
beauty and wit, whose decrees the susceptible I

It we could lye certain that our female poli

are, cliale the moat generous s.iirif. It is tho
servant's place, in many cases, to make them
grow small by dorcc and beautifully leS.s,
until they reach the vanishing point. The
household-world Is full of lil lie I roubles, which
the good servant, atitidp-ilimr, can avoid. Of
Course, much depends u;on the uiittriMs, lint
extensive as is her realm, she cannot be ex-
pec ted to confine bers-lf exclusively to its less
attractive requirements. A wife the bus
band's helpmate should be something mor(.
UiHli a mere hou tekeeper. There U a world
of mind, as well as n world of matter, to which
she should attend.
Connubial happiness is not conditional Unu
having the front dr-steps Immaculate, and the
handles of bath tub pipes in the highest stato
ofpolMi. A woman is not a better wife, for
having a scrubbing brush In her hand from
morn to night. Mhe does not make a bettor
companion for her husband because tlin chief
duly of Iter life Is to anoint the bricks in the
back garden with vermilion v.iruih, or to
keep the kitchen oil cloth as polished as th'i
parlor mirror. It is the duty of tho mistress
to understand how everything Is to be done
mid to do a fair share In the transaction of It.
In the few cases where her position removes
her from taking an active part, in the manage
ment of the house, home is never ma le Ims
happy because she understands how noma
comlorts are to be secured, and tho annoy
ance of Ignorance remedied. Comfort Is
the essence of happiness. It Is a'lo'.li r n un
for what home should mean, an 1 she is tlu
best wife who thoroughly empl ys lis prin
ciples. Kvery household has Its skeleton; and If we
aro to believe the asserveratlons of house
keepers, the family skeleton at pre:it is tin
servant. Across the water c.im 'j t io satin
cry. For tliu past year or two several of the
principal London journals and mag i.in -s have
yielded no small space to the consideration of
the servant question. Tu our suffering-, wo
nro not a'ono. Culinary crimes tire not con
fined to American kitchens. My Lard tiii.t
and my Lady that have probably experienced
as much alllictio.i in this respect as any
Ameiic.an aristocrat, und even Fkancatk.m.i,
perhaps, has lamented the necessity of agih?
and impudent auxiliaries, who, next to hiimelf,
are chief cooks and bol tie-washers.
To solve the problem, Iho trite theory must
bt adopted of faults on both sides. Does not
the mistress sometimes forget that slis is the
absolute centre of the household, whe.ice all
happiness must radiate? Is the conviction
ulways present w ith her that, charming m she
may be In the drawing-room or the assembly,
she was made for higher, though she may
count them meaner things? Does sho ever
apply the moral of CiiAtti.orrK Riiontk'u
dropping the ardor of composition to peel
jotatoes, with'alteution especially directed to
their "eyes?" Is she thoroughly convinced
that cleun carpets, dustless furniture, regular
meuls, general neatness, all adorned with the
light of her own countenance, contribute Tery,
very much to the comfort of a home ? In the
conceptions she has of that ideal servant which
shall some day exist, does she remember that
the model upon which that per ect pattern is
to be constructed must be found in herself?
The requirements oi utuy are symmetrical.
They all dove-tail. It is true of the brilliant
woman of society no less than of the daily
drudge whoso wholo worm is comprised in tue
limits of the threshold, that her llrst uuty is
to her husband, children, home.
It Is only by educating girls to housaker'p
ing that the ideal servant can hope to be
'realized. When that event takes place tho
epoch of domestie millennium then nutter
will always be brought upon the table hard In
summer and geutly yielding In winter.
Potatoes will have an Inevitable riounness ol
flavor, und lamb-chops will lorget what It U
to be muttony. Castors will ever be clean,
and table cloths ceuse to bo linen S.iharas,
i hold, and not the terror, und the mistress
: shall be the hind genius by whom the gltul
change has been wrought.
