From that lime t.nth.ai.d for sewial trips
Worslcy was not molested, though not altogether
unsuspected. In fact, he was told that wa'ches
were su to detect, it possible, by what routes he
came within their lines with his goods. Thcre
Hlter he left Wnshingtun at midnight, mid travel
ing hy the most iinticipiciitcd routes by night,
and h.din. in (be w.s.ds by day. he succeeded in
cludintr the vigilance of the Itelicls. Another
plan tor his detection wus then arranged.
An np liculi..n lor a safe-conduct tlirniigli the
Kcdi rnl lines was uppliod for bv l''atiny Noland, a
shurp-witu el, daiint:,und malignant she Keliel.
As Worsley had carried other women through
previously, ho could not re-fuse htr without being
inspected ; so be consented nt on.-e to do so, and
brought her to Washington, where she had manv
friends; and doubtless Mime who read these line's
will renumber her introduction of Worsleiy to
tbi in as her tried and trusty frieud. From that
time be was almost on rw helmed with Icttcis
from Vashingtoiiiiins and others to be carried to
their friends in relicidnm.
Fanny accompanied hint on his return trip,
and he si.J s it was tho most ha unions ono he
ever undertook, never onco appearing on a tra
veled road ; he kept lu hy-puths nnd on roads
made through the woods by wood-ch i.h r-, until
he struck the Middicburg pike, where thev heard
that Federal aeouts were approa 'hing Middlebiug
by the Lcesbiirg pike. He whipped his horse into a
gallop, and arrived in Middicburg a few mluutcs
ahead of the scouts. Upon their nrrival they
rrocceded to arrest many of Moscby'a men; but
r.owirg Worsley, they foolishly paoscd him und
his goods by nntouebed.
No sooner had they departed from the town
thnn one of Moseby 's officers went to Worsley, ai
he sat upon a pia.za, and calling him "a spy,"
nnd sei.ing him by the throat, told him to ptc
purc to die, charging him with prearranging the
descent of the scouts upon the-in; it was in vain
he protested his innocence; the threat was about
being carried into execution, when Fanny Nu
Lind interposed to suvo Worsley ; asserting his
entire ignorance of the ailair, and telling the
oftiner he would have to shoot Worslev tUrwugh
tier liody. Tho ollicer finally grunted a brief
respite, that she might go and see Moseby, which
she did, and so satisfied that personage of Wors
ley 's innocence, that he went and released him,
and apologized for the rough treatment of which
he had been the victim.
After that, and until the hint trip he mnde,
Worsley thought himself clear of all suspicion.
On the oecasion he referred to, however, a friend
bad informed him that heavy orders for goods
had been given him, with the intent, when ho
should return with the goods, to hang him and
confiscate his goods. Of course he did not return.
