Wasiiinoion, November !). At a lato hour
last night President Lincoln was serenaded by a
club of Pennsylvunians, hi ailed by Captain
Thomas, of that Slate, lleiug loudly called for,
the Pri trident appeared at a window and spoko as
follows :
Friends and Fellow-Citizens : Even before I
had hi en informed by you that this compliment
was imid me by loyal citir.ens of Pennsylvania
ftier.dlyto me, 1 had interred that you were 01
that nortion of my countrymen who think that
the best interests of tho nation nro to ho sub.
6crvcd by the support of tho present administra
tion.
1 do not pretend to say that you who think so
embrace all the patriotism and loyalty of tho
country , but 1 do believe, and I trust without
personal interest, thut the wcllare of tho country
dues requite that such support und endorsement
be given.
I earnestly believe that flic consequences ot this
day's work, if it be as you at sure me, and as now
seems prohab'.o, will be to tho lasting; advantage,
if not to tho very salvation of the country.
I cannot at this hour say what inn bcn tho
result of the ilcctlon, but whatever it may be, I
have no desire to modify this opinion that all
who have labored to-day in behalf of the Union
organisation have wrought for the best interest
of their country and tho world, not only for tho
prei-cni but for all future nges.
1 am thankful to God for this 11pprov.1l of the
people, but, while deeply gratetu! for this mark
of their confidence in 1110, ll l know my neart,
my gratitude is free from any mint of personal
triumph.
I do not impugn the motives of any 0110 op
posed to me. It is no pleasure to 1110 to triumph
over uny one, but 1 give tLanks to tlio Almighty
for this evidence of the people's resolution to
mud by free government and the rights of
humanity.
