The history of all past political contorts

Let not the battle which Is to be fought on the
morrow add another such example to the long
roll of political failures. We have a sure con
rlction that the righteousness of our cause
and the Integrity of our candidates will give
ns victory. The Democrats are working ; let
IU not be Idle. They will spare no exertions
to gain success. Eveiy yote within their reach
Will be polled, every fraud which is possible

Ingenuity can Invent be publicly circulated.
Let not the glorious victory almost within oar
grasp be lost by the suplnencss of the sup
porters of the cause of Union and Liberty.
Let every loyal man not only poll his own
Tote, but take with hint friends who will serve
the double purpose of swearing to his rlht of
suffrage, and of exercUing themselves the
dearest privilege secured to freemen.
By all you hold most sacred, we call upon
you not to Call to do your duty to your coun

Dot let them falter for an Instant In the path
dictated by duty as well as honor.
Let as bring out the whole strength of the
Union party. The Keystone State Is not cer

she will keep her escutcheon unsullied, but
the future is shrouded In Impenetrable nighU
Suppose that by six majority the Stato Is lost

To ascertain what that will Is, the elections
must be froe, and conducted according to

It may happen that some informality, or

The question of fact must properly be referred

N aten to ancuae the other side with unfair
ness and the like. Hut accusation In these
esses Is most often rested on no belter basis
than the feeling of disappointment and dis
content which succeeds failure at the bid-lot-box.
I!ut public Justice Is not -atistlcd with such
1ooh and groundless Imputation of dishon
esty, whether niiide against individual v.ncrsor
a whole political party. W hrn an election Is
held, and the Issue of it U regularly aseer
tnlned snd proclniincd, It is to bo premmnd
to have been a legal, free, and fair election,
miless the eontrnry Is made evident In a duo
and Inwful manner. If that should bj don ",
then the election Is pronounced void by the
authorities having the rlpht to ps,4 upon th
question. It Is not, hide -d, always pov llile
to ihow conclusively In a court of law that
flic elective franrhl.se has been wrongfully
Interlcred with or fraudulently exercised.
Hut the law ran take no account of such disa
bilities or accidents. It deals and can d 'd
only with facts made apparent In some formal
and nulheutlc wsy.
If, then, an election goes ngainst any Indi
vidual or party, neither has any right to treat
it as a nullity only because it Is suspected that
the successful candidate or party employed
Improper means of any kind to bring about
the result. Such a privilege, If allowed, would
soon pot an end to all elections, since it would
be useless to bold an election of which tho
result would not be binding nq a minority
Ix-jond their unlimited and Irrespon
sIMe discretion. Nor Is there any ex
tremity which, In a state of civil
society, would , Justify the violent and
Irregular revolt of a minority, or an apparent
minority, of voters arrainst the decision of tho
ballot-box. And jet when wo hear persons
talking about having "a free election or a free
light,'' there Is no understanding what they
mean, except on the hypothesis that they may
set uny election aside which they choose to
charge as not having been free, and that they
may bo the sole and final judges of the truth
or falsehood of their allegation.
All such language Is very silly, as well as
mischievous, unless those who use it Intend In
udvanee to abide the result of an election
provided they carry it, or to begin a revolu
tion if they do not. If tint were thidr pur
pose, then they would be altogether unworthy
or tho right of suffrage, which they would
enjoy themselves, while ready to deny Its
practical und legitimate remits to others.
