The Governor of our Commonwealth ha
Issued his annual proclamation calling upon
the people of our land to return thanks to
Almighty God for the manifold blowings
which He has vouchsafed to our nation. Some
of our cltiwns who are slightly tinctured with
melancholia can sec but Utile, to be thaukful
for, and cannot see the hand ol God guiding and
blessing the nation lie has chosen as His "pe
culiar people." From such we would U(-k a tow
momenta' attention, while we recount the
numerous kindnesses and ceaseless care with
which the Lord has strewn our path during
Uie year which will shortly close.
He his blessed our State with tho greatest
gift that Heaven vouchsafes to man perfect
health. Look at the experience of years that
art (one; look at tho devast ttioni which have
laid waste to many homos by thosu
frightful epidemics, the cholera, yellow fever,
and smallpox. But, say those who murmur
at the acts of Providence, "our land U afflicted
with war sad, unrelentlng war which carries
loved one out of every house, and fills Hol
lands of homes with mourning surpassing
that of violent disease." But is It not better, oh,
Cither and mother! to have your sons die In de
fense of the most sacred right of man, than to
see them linger away and at last fall into the
grave exhausted by some loathsome disease ?
To every one upon this earth death como b
locu or late ;
" And how can man die better th m by facing
' fei.rful odds
" For the ashes of hit fathors and tho temples of
nti uou f
i Murmur not at the dispensations of Provl
donee, for "the ways of tho Lord aro not as our
ways."
Again Is there no cause fur thanksgiving
in the abundant crops which fill our barns to
overflowing, and say to the poorest of our
land, "Eat, drink, and bo merry 1" When we
Bee Ireland groaning beneath tho dread of
starvation, when other lands ure tilled with
apprehensions of coming despair, It is a
pleasant thought, O farmer I as you scat tor
your seed, that for every handful which you
cast the cries of your Icllow-belugs in other
climes are changed into thanksgiving, and
their sadness into joy. Should wo not be
thankful that our teeming Holds enable us to
supply the wants of our army, and ease the
pain of the Blck and wounded? Ceres has
proved the truest friend to Mars. Surely for
this we ou"ht to raUe our sougs of thanks
giving.
, Again In our national affairs, have we not
Cause for Joy ? Ilava not tho pro-ipocta bright-
. ened since last we read the Governor's call for
thanksgiving ? lias not victory perched upon
our banners in every battle, both ou land and
ea? Are we not nearer to-day tho consum
mation of our hopes?
. When, says aneleut mythology, the flrst
' woman opened tho Pandora-box, out flew dis
ease, famine, pestilence, and war. She quickly
Closed the lid, but all bud escaped to desolate
,' the earth, except Hope, ntid it remained alone
forever in tho human breatL
But in tho hearts of the American people
! there remains one other quality besides hope
that is, determination. And these twin
' attributes of a great nation will lead us on to
. victory and a permanent peace. Can any ouo
say, after thinking over what mia;ht have been
our lot, after seeing with his mind's eye our
State desolated by the foot of the invader,
bains empty, and the populace crying for
bread ; defeat happening to our armies ; d-
- stroction to our nation, end disease at home,
that we are not blessed? Can any one, after
these things, hesitate lo return his thanks for
A complete preservation from ueh horrors ?
Thanksgiving Day! What fond linagiuings
h calls up I The reunion, of long-separated
friends and relatives. To the mind of child
hood, the vision o gigantic turkey looms up
before the delighted mind; and truly a turkey,
with proper siuroundings, is a causj in itself
for a special thanksgiving.
Happlnewt Is the prominent f.saturo of the
day, Joy fills every heart, and the soul of man
- sends up its tlnuiLs to its Creator.
Upon such a day, it Is proper to give to the
poor, help the needy, free the oprcsncl,
and ofier to tho Almighty our sincere thanks
fcr all the goodness Ho hat shown to the
children of men.
Di mocrncy of the r.mplro City, has written a
letter railing on tho supporters and friends of
the lamented DoL'olas, whose memory was
insulted by the action of the Chicago Conven
tion, to listen to the voice of this lead T and
follow in the path which ho would have IroJ,
were be on earth. The w holo letter is pub
lished In another column, and wo commend It
to the earnest attention of all truo War Demo
crats. Tho General Is too well known to
reed commendation from our pen, and his
voice will be listened to with attention by all.

Xot content with cheating the soldiers
around Kiehmond and Petersburg oitt ol th Or
votes, IIohatio Skymouii extends his fraud
system to the Southwest. Captain Pknnock,
commanding the Mississippi Squadron, Is as
true a patriot as walks the quarter-deck, and
he entertains a whole-souled contempt for all
traitors, whether in arms or whither they
hold high position among the free people of
the North.
Consequently, when he discovered the game
of Seymouh'b agents who hnd been sent down
to take the vote in his squadron, he. promptly
slopped It, by distributing equally tickets with
the names of the Union candidates, Lincoln
and Joiinhon, and tho Skymoch candidates,
MoClellan and Pknm.kton. SisYMouu'd
game was blocked by this flank movement.
His agents were instructed to rerrire only
the rotet of those men who desired to vote
for Mi.Cl.LLLAN the New York soldier and
freeman who had a preference for Mr. Lin
coln was to be denied the privilege of voting.
This Is the "free ballot" again, of which the
Democrats boast. This is tho "free ballot"
which in huge letters is emblazoned on Demo
cratic transparencies in Democratic profes
sions, where Democrats outrage tho commu
nity by mobbing Unbn club-houses,und prove
their devotion to frccdjin of speech, freedom
of thought, and freedom of action, by crush
ing in the skulls of men who do not choose
to adopt their mode of thinking, and who cm
not understand tho chums of GuoitoK B.
McClkllan to the Presidency.
The country will thank Captain Pi'.NXOcit
for his action lu this matter; and every mm
having a regard for honesty and the welfuro
of tho nation will indignantly repudiate a
party which so persistently endeavors to Btay
by fraud Its failing! fortunes.
