opportunity offered, the Vnion fueling would em
phatically manifest it-clf. Ho bought some gold
before he left Richmond, paying :s? i in Con
federate money for one dollar in coin.
After Early's defeat In the valley a dollar in
gold could not be purchased for IeM than thirty
dollars In paper. He says no ono out of the
Confederacy can have a correct idea of the gene
ral effect of tho ravages of war, both as to agri
culture and trade.

Nhw York, Oetolier ol. We have received
North Carolina dates to the 27th Inst.
The late frost had mutci ially checked the yellow
fever, which Is abating. Medical authorities say
that it will not be sale for parties to rctnrn who
have not been exposed to fever until the cold
weather sets In permanently.
The reported death of Colonel Ileaton and his
son Is incorrect. Roth have recovered.
Tha number of deaths from fever will not
exceed 2000, consisting mostly of citizens and
refugees. The fever originated from a ship at
the foot of Craven street, Newborn, which was
filled np last .Tune with manure and barrels of
rotten meat.

MoNTnKAL, October 31. The Confederate
managers iu the case of the St. Albans raiders, in
the event of a decision being given by the Cana
dian Court to surrender up the raidi rs, intend
appealing to a Judicial Committee of the Privy
Council in Engl ind.
It is reported that the United .States Govern
ment has notiiicd England of their intention to
inert ae their armament on the lakes for the pur
pose of protecting tho frontiers.

Roston, October 81. The Rebel pri.c btctnnov
npe arriTed at this port to-day, having been
captured off Wilmington, N. C, on the i'ii Inst.,
by the United States steamer I'.olus.
She was previously chased for several boars on
the 20tb, and in order to escape threw most of
her cargo overboard. The cargo consisted of
machinery, coffee, dry goods, &c.
The llapt is a vessel of 000 tons and 300-horsu
power. She was built at Liverpool last year, by
Messrs. James Tingson Si Co , and made one
successful trip before being captured.

hern, who represented bitrixclf to Thomas
Potts, a dealer in iron la Second struct, beluw
Race, as tbe blacksmith of tho Oirard Avenue
Railroad Company, and on their account bought
the ii on in ipiesuon. He had, iu lac', for some
time been acting in that capacity, and Mr. Polls
knew him as Mich. Instead, however, of apply
ing the iron to the use of the company, he sold
it to defendant for $'.'00, its value being about
Kelly knew Mtilhern as the blacksmith of the
fiirard Avenue Company, and there was nothing
to show tint bo lind reason to suspect there w as
