send Union soldiers' ballots to the army, with
plain Instructions how they ttre to be voted.
We have received within a week several letters,
Of which the two following are samples. The

Colonel ChnllrM K. Lowell.
This bravo ofllcer, one of the most gallant sol
diers of Massachusetts, was mortally wounded
last Wednesday in tho battle of Cedar creek, aud
died the next day. Colonel Lowell was a cavalry
otlitcr, und though only in service since IttGl, be
had a Cno reputation in tho regular army, in
which be was an offlccr of the fitli Cavalry. Vigi
lant, brave, capable, ho was always trusted, and
be never (might but to distinguish himself. His
death, like that of his gallant and lamontcd
brother-in-law. Colonel Koliert Gould Shaw, who
fell in the assault on Km t Wagner, is a sad loss
to the army and to tho country.
Colonel Lowell was one of a family which has
fullered painfully in this war. His brother,
James It. Lowell, Lieutenant in the 2.0th Massi
chnsetts, fell at the buttle of Malvern, aud died
in the hands of the enemy. A cousin of those
two, William Lowell l'utnatn, the only son of
his mother, was killed at Hall's ltlnlf, while
bravely cheering his men. Colonel Lowell mar
ried about a year ago a sister of the gallant and
laments d Colonel Hubert U. Shaw, who, also tho
rnly 'on of his parents, fell in tha assault on
Fort Wnguer.
Itev. Mr. Conway, writing to the Boston Com
monuralih from Hath, England, describes the
meeting of the British Association for tho Ad
vancement of Science, and says :
"Lieutenant M. K. Maury, who was present,
wandered abont like a lost spirit (he limps more
and looks balder than ever). On one occasion he
and his former friend l'rofessor William U.
Ilogers, of Hoston, who was also present met in
ono of tho sections, and Maury prepared for a
recognition; but Rogers somehow failed to see
him, though he was very near."
