Not finding himself able to make much headway against Grant, Lkk has resorted to a new and Ingenious dodge, to aid the Jaillrg cause of which he is the main stay. And what do our readers think It Is ? Simply tothlng more or less than tho paroling of all Union prisoners who will mpport the McClellaj and Pendleton ticket at the Coming election. Those of our brave boys who refuse to vote for the little gunboat hero lure to be retained In captivity and scut further South. This la to be their punishment for Standing by the country and Ignoring those who would humble the nation at the feet of Terr. Davis. If tbera are any who feel Inclined to doubt the truth of this attempt, on the part of Lkk, to aid his old friend VcCx.KLi.Air, let tnem read the following Statement, subscribed and sworn to by a Union soldier released on the last day of August, and sent home with the understand . ing that he would vote the Copperhead-Peace i'JSttl o rmnttfhanin, Mvnl$tnnery county, u, , "Ptnonally iippoared before me, a justice of ' "the peace In uud for said county, Franklin "Schwbnk.oI Upper Providence township, Mont " goon ry county, and State of l'onnylritnia. a " prrae of Company II, i.3th Regiment I'unn " sylvana Cavalry, who, on his solemn oatti, "aipoMih and Bay s, that on the 9th day of M'cn, 1864, be was taken prisoner near lirls " tow Station, Va., and conveyed to Belle Isle " prison, and from thence to General Hospital io. i, in nicann'nu ; mat on lue mst uav oi Aofrast, IHM, the director of said hospital waited so hira, and proposed to parole him and " to ixrmit him to return borne it he would pro- ' mi e to vote for Obohgb B. This Is only one of many instances which t nave come to our knowledge, and It ought to settle the matter conclusively In any (Ulr mind '. that the Richmond Cabinet of traitors really hope for the election of the Chicago nominees. Thev look to such a contingency as their onlv chance for success, and so far as they are able . to contribute to McClellan's support they will do It, and that with as much anxiety and earnestness as the drowning man who clutches At a straw. Let fcie voters of the free State.?, the friends & our common country, and the advocates of freedom, louder well this last dodire of the I enemy. IOI.ITICI, ETIQi eTIE. "General McClkllan is a gentleman." If yen ask a certain class of men why they in tend (o rote the Democratic ticket, this is the answer you get. If It is the truth, and we are wIMug to admit it, it ought to follow that his party is the gentlemau's party. A gentleman does not lie ; but what are we to call the state ments that Mr. Lincoi.it draws his salary In gold that the public debt Is now $4,01)0,000,000, and Is Increuslu'' tit the rate of $:,000,O0i) dayand that our recent military operations are In reality defeats, which are concealed Xrora the people by the Administration for electioneering nurposes. If these are not wil ful lies, we are no Judge of tho article. Again a pentk man does not libel aud slander any one, not even his enemy, liut what can we call the Democratic abuse of Mrs. Lincoln-, f the President, and of every uuiinber of his Cabinet, aud more particularly of every mem ber of their own party who ha i been induuol, by patriotism, to support tliu Administration? So a ceutleinau does not use abusive lan- cuaire. What are such expressions as "tynnt," ' "Wiot," 'buffoon." ad applied to the Prcalilunt of the United States by that eminently deco rous or;an of Democracy, the New York M'orW, nnd that other orciui, neither so eml Dent nor so decorous, the Philadelphia Aye? In short, there never has bceu a political cani alfrn conducted w!fh so much mlsrepre' seutation of facts, so much slander ol charac' tcr und uiotlvcs, and so much outrageous per sonal abuse, as has been employed in the pre sent contest by that party which boasts that its cundidate is a gentlemnn. OI It A 1IOY4I. MHAH.I'Ja ANi FKTItOI Kl'.n. The vast material resources of this country have long been and still remain a marvel and a mystery to the world. Yet great as they rp. it is nast doubt that humim len has not reached, and probably never will completely comprehend the boundless, Inexhaustible mineral and other like wealth of tho United States of North America and their territories. It will require thousands of years of time, and a population dense as that of China or Japan, to begin to develop the untold and burled tides ol' our magnllicent domain. We of this gem ration do not even Imagine what our pos r tetitj In a not very distant age will more than rtallaie. We have not space hero to go Into any very elaborate exposition of tho Bubject, It U not " possible In a newspaper article to enumerate fully, much less, discuss in detail, those dif ferent Items of ( natural production which go to make up the sum of those partly revealed 1 iiitl partly ttfldJacoveitd resources which, are destined hereafter to make tlUs nation the most opulent, prosperous, and powerf ul that baa evxT exlstc4 In tho tide of ttran. It la already known that our beds of coal and Iron arc of enormous extent, and not capable of eshauction for thousands of yea'S. There are moreover, other minerals and roetals hidden In the bowels of the earth, yet not suspected, but which accldeut or selenitic exploration, will, In due season, bring to ll;ltt. What Idea had our colonial progenitors of the Dorado on the shores of the Pacific 7 It is only a few jenrs a;o that the goMea trea sures of Csllfornia were openel to our vision ; and since Hint period out during auJ enter prMnr; joi'le have nnt only ad led millions upon millions of auriferous wealth to the treasury of the world, but rednoinod to settle ment nud clvllizontlon a region wnicn.tnouH only a little while ago a bowling wilderness, promises to Ix'como the richeH and roost thriving section of territory on the trlobo. This, too, was North American and not con tinental ; the crop from South America being so small as to hardly enter the estlm ito. It was also a product of tho United States, as neither Mexico nor Canada contributed what Is deserving of mention as a rospeclablo frac tion. In a total silver product of $53,000,000, America yielded $40,000,000, or very nearly four-fifths. Of this tho larger share catna from South America and Mexico, the yield of the Union at that timo being very trifling. It has attained somewhat more prominonco since. The grand aggregate, $204,4:11355, ascertains our sharo to be $133,434,305, or more than half. But these facts are not large enough to measure the present. In 10 Nevada was unknown, Arizona unworked, Idaho un mapped, Colorado unexplored, Montana a wild, and Utah a wilderness. They are now organized territories, and about emerging from their chrysalis condition as sovereign States. Tho change is worked solely by their wealth. So wondrous Is it that even California contributes to their population, while the world continues to flow to California. Cut here In the East there Is a later dis covery of natural wealth, quite as marvellous and profitable as the gold dlscovorles on tho Pacific. It is only the other day, compara tively speaking, that In the northwest corner of Pennsylvania a new source of wealth was detected and uncovered, which has caused a sensation even greater than that occasioned by the first revelations of the golden sands of the Sacramento, and promises to prove of far greater utility and value to the commerce and Industry of all nations. Ihc wells of coal oil in Venango county are literally flowing forth continuous streams of precious liquid, and those who originally owned the lands or have since purchased In fee or leased them for the purpose of develop ment, have suddenly realized fortunes of almost incredible magnitude. The excite ment on the subject is unprecedented, and is increasing daily. They who have fanciod that It was a visionary nnd short-lived fever have been and are destined still to be graatly de ceived in that conceit. Investigation and experiment have shown that the doposits of oil aro not limited to any singlo district, but run probably with little Interruption in a certain line from northeast to southwest as far down as Koitucky, if not beyond that. recent discoveries in Greene county, in thin Slate, Jufctify the belief that the oil of that region ia not ouly of a quality superior to any yet found elsewhere, but that the yield will also be more abundant and lasting. Develop ments of a Blmllnr character are making in Western Virginia and in certain portions of Kentucky and Ohio; and the reasonable expec tation is that the oil business, both In produc tion and consumption, Is now but In its incep tion, and that it will go forward, from this time forth, growing and expanding In import ance and influence to an Incalculable extent. We are fully warranted In this expectation by the past developments of the trade. Up to 1803, the progress of the petroleum trade astonished everybody, but that of tha nast year has exceeded all expectation. It is evident that the wells have no bottain. What the product for tho year has been wo cannot say. It may be that, In the excitement of a highly prosperous business, no accurate ac count has been kept; but tho custom-house figures give some Indication. Petroleum Is exported to every country in the world. In 1801 wo Bhlpped 1,112,470 gallons; In 1832 it rose to 1087,701 gallons; and In lf!U3 It reached the extraordinary quantity of i48,OC0,0O0. In addition to this foreign export, the home demand la enormous. Though the whole business Is strictly a new one, yet It his already assumed shape and stability. Ships for conveying It to England are constructed oil-tight, and tho barrels emptied directly into the. hold, thus carrying it in bulk. The export hut year employed what was equal to 252,000 ships of 1U00 tons each, and wa3 worth near $15,000,000 if aetined. or $12,000,03 if crude. The export for this year Is estimated ut 40,000,000 galloiw. Such facts seem almost fabulous, and yet they are severely true and substantial. They certainly warrant all the interest yet taken in coul oil lands nnd storks, and Justify, more over, tho prediction that petroleum is destined to become greater than cotton or gold as an element In our wealth and commerce. Wk invitk intention to tho statement In our city news report of tho vigor aud cnerary with which the supporter of the Govern ment in tho Tenth Ward have gone to work.
