General Bibnky was a Southerner by birth, hating been born in Alabama. Ills fathor was the celebrated Jamkb O. Tho public remember well how nobly and bravely General Buinkt bore himself in the terrible battles from the Wilderness to Foters . burg. His last meeting wUh the enemy was tin the south bank of tho James early In this ' month, when he defeated the RcbeU, and sent . them flying into Riclirnoud before the impe tuous advance of the 10thCorps, of which he but a short time previous bud been appolutud ', commander. General Bibkey's death will be heavily . Alt in the army, where he was a great favor . Ite with both officers and men. No nobler . plrit has led our heroic legions to battle in this war for the Union than David Hell, Bibbey. There will be many an eye suJ'jjed frith tears among his brave veterans when the sad word reaches them, "Bibney is dead!" Our sympathies, and those of our people, are with them and with his bereaved family ' and friends. The nation has lost iu him one Cf Its most illubtrious sons, and Freedom one . of her most trusty champions. THK KFFECT. The reduced majorities of the State eloc ' tlen are producing a wholesome result in favor of the Union cause. Instead of creating a feeling of despondency, as was expected by the enemies and feared by the friends of tho Government, they have roused the heart of the loyal masses to new and greater exertions. The -defeat of Bull Bun was the precursor of a grander uprising than followed the attack on Sumter: and the inglorious failure of HcClellan In the seven dayB' fights only piled fuel on tho altar-fires of loyalty and - patriotism. It Is, therefore, no idlo prophesy to predict that the coming electiou will be carried tor Lincoln and JonsdoN with a : trh:rlwlnd of enthusiasm. In the recent election, thousands voted the - Democratic ticket although their hopes and tympathles were all In favor of the success of ' the Union candidates. They thought that the holy cause of freedom and national unity Was secure beyond all peradventure. They IVere tco timid to take the bold step of break bag the party ties of ft lifetime, and they, therefore, either did not vote at all or voted ' as tbay always had done, i ' These men now see that there Is no other ' true and honest course than to vote for Lin coln and Johnbon. The close vote of the State election brings them face to face with the fact that there Is no longer a choice with ' aafety to the national honor. They fuel that tho ark of Democratic Institutions Is In dan ger, and that they must put forth their hand to aave IU Secret hopes and silent prayers . are no longer of avail. He that is not with ' the Government Is against it, and against it not only, but against the great cause of hu manity aud civilization and political freedom, Which has struggled in triumph against super- tltion and priestcraft and tho tyranny of throne through all the long centuries down to the piesent hour, A III'HIAI. OF II ITt'HEM We are glad to be nble to assure the loyal ; masses of our State and elsewhere, that Penn- aylvauia is being thoroughly organized for the coming election. The closeness of the : rote on tho 11th bus hotvn the necessity of . shaking off the apathy which frciuout suc cesses had inspired. ... General Cameko.v, Governor Curtin Alexaniieh McCllke, nad Wayne 'McVeigh are now in tho city, with a view , of taking couuuel together for the success of the great cause that is so close to the heart of ' every true patriot. When God denounced against our first parent the penalty of labor for tholr transgression of His law, He conferred a bono fnctlonj In the gulso of an atllirtlon. But for the nrofKity of earning our "bread by tbo fwt titol our brows," the earth would nover Imve been redeemed from It wilderness con d lion, nor the inventive and meehinieal f if illics of mankind been brought into exercise. Bclore the RelMdlion be!an, tbo Southern States produced a stajile which formed tlio principal Item In the list of our exports, and was a source ol lmmea'ie revenue and wealth, not only to tho producers, but to ths nation. This was so to such an extent that "Cotton" was said to be "King;" and the influence which it exerted in the commercial and fluin ilulecouomy of the country waa so great, tlmt tho people of tho Houlh supposed they could prefer any political prctensioni, how ever extravagant and unreasonable, without Lelng quentioued or resisted. But cotton has been dethroned. It pressed its claims too far, aud those claims were properly denied and resisted. The peoplo of tho North wore never unmindful of the pecu niary value to the nation of tho cotton culture They fully recognized its whole importance as a source of national revenue and of national commerce. But when the producers of cotton undertook to place that single clement of national prosperity above the law of the nation wben they presumed on the confes sedly great share which the cotton trade had In the general Industry, traffic, and prosperity of the country, to tho extent of dictating tho policy of the Government In all domestic and foreign affairs, the people of the North refused to longer suffer such domination. The consequence Is before us to-day. South ern cotton-planters thought they could rule tho whole country because they raised that nioct valuable staple. In order to raise It, they held slaves. Slavery was obviously a condition of Southern wealth and power; and the Soutliern slave-owners, presuming on the necessity of the cotton crop to the general comfort and aggrandizement of the nation, undertook to control the general policy and administration of the Itepnblic. Falling in that, they claimed the right to withdraw from a'pollticol partnership which they could no longer direct and manage to suit themselves, and they forthwith commenced a rebellion against the National Government, which has lasted nearly four years, and has cost the country an enormous amount of expense, both in blod and treasure. The result will be a complete overthrow of the Rebellion and the reduction of "King Cotton" to the subor dination it should always have owed and paid to the peace, ui.ity, and happiness of the whole cou ntry.
