ITS ARRIVAL AT DEPOTS AND
WAY STATIONS.
In times of war and great political excitement,
we of the eity are too apt to depreeUto the advan
tage" bestowed npi-n ho.-n.mity by the ds ly
newspapers, aivl to imagine that the bom-tits
arising irom their perusal are tcuip irary in the r
nature.
Look at tho crowds dally conf recvo t in front
of rur otliee on the occasion of our, at tiine,
hourly i sues. Smoking hot from the prc.s, th--y
an- raucht tip, their .-.intents eaij- rly dovo ire l,
and, " I'wist '.like, there comes an incessant
dt innnd for ''more." And thus one in iy he
tempted to imagine that with the re.ulln,; the r
tcichliiK" are foiotlen, and that before night sc s
in thin ate noihini; more than iii-ire wisto paper.
MTuitcver truth there may bo iu th s m it er, so
far as the city is concerned, in 1'eninylv ini i,
New Jersey, and other Scutes ivher.j Tun l'i:n:
ohai'ii is Largely circulated, the easels tar dif
ferent. A week or ten days since, asono of the repor'ers
of this paper journcve 1 far iiuo Ihe tooir t lino.is
reimis ul tscliuy ikill coiinty, this IH-t.wis
trorKly iinpreP.cd upon him. Al mg tho lino of
Ihe Heading riiiiroad the rta'est ex. -'lenient
existed, and nt all the way minions and pirc it
depots eiowdsof people, almost riotous in ai
pearaiiec, besi.-tti'd iho newsiiovs and h.wgig.)
ear in quest ot Tnn Tki.kokai'ii. While some
were supplied nt these points, lars-e bundles of
newspapers were immediately eonveyod t the
iiews-.tands of these towns and Tillages, and
there their distribution took place.
Something of the ecit, tnont, although on a
smaller scale, exhihiied iu our press room and at
our counters while the paper is going to press,
also occurs nt the p ilnts alluded to. Tho pa ht
depot may be a little brick structure, located in
i lie centre ot the town, or a dilapidated liumo
shanty adjoining the line of the railroad.
No presiding dri'y ot the press-room of our
citv papers, who, between luruxiiiig th. papers
through the windows of the room to the boys,
stumping, whis'ling, ami hatlodng outride, and
oecusioiinlly administering a sharp blur with a
rattan to some tellow more obstreperous than the
rest, ever reigned more, despoti -.ally th in thso
umo town and village newspaper sellers, who,
by -the-by, freriienily occupy tlie position of post
master al the same lime.
As in the city Ihe, 'regular carriers" have tho
preference In being supplied. The-e "regulars"
in the country are those who, in one-seat w.u'ous
or mi hom-hack, convey the papers, on the arrival
of the trains, to those little villages ihat are some
miles removed from the railway station. Their
bundles aie made up for theiii.and otf they start.
Then eomos the delivery of the Tiik Tc.i.r.
oiiapii to the crowds congrcgitol outside the
hui.tling. Not a hit less vchoiucnt are they in
their deniiitids tliero than at our counter in this
cey, that onu should be served lirst over another.
Th. ie is almost the same amount of gruuililing,
the samu seiies of short contentious, nud the
mine extent of scowling and Uisconleut As in
Philadelphia, muny of them would lie lienor con
tented tj go to bed supperlesaiban to miss receiv
ing the utternoon p.. per. Soma of them have
walked or ridden miles to ob'aiu their paper;
und during these war times, so accustomed
huro they been to receive it that Im a'isence
awakens a feeling almost akin to thai of a
departed friend.
If Tin: Tiii.ioiiAru should have been delayed
until the departure of the train; if Hie press
should have broken down, or an accident taken
place on the railroad I (.riicious! what a act of
wot-begone looking peoplo they are! How long
the waik or drive home, uud how sleepless the
night may bo passed by them! Our army may
ml have been driven iuto the Potomac, and like
l'hnmoh's huns, swallowed up by the lnigbtv
eh incut! Or else, Pennsylvania may og tin have
bein inrmlcd, and llarrisiiurg and Ptiitud -lplii i
Inflames! In tact, there is no end to this horri
ble nightmare, occasioned by thu failure of tho
paper to come to hand.
ilut it is to the newspaper as nn educator that
we might make special roferencc. Tnis grc.it book
of the poople sei mingly exerti a more p cent
liilln. nce, be it for good or evil, in iUj country
than in the city. In our towns mi l vi'lag-s (ha
daily papers are not alone roa I, hut .ih.!h-I.
Along our great highways of farms, rivers, and
ciimtl and in tlie mountainous regi ins, the
ncwpair, beside- satisfying the v nyi'i djnia-id
lor news, also Insti nets the masses. Tne truths,
therein unnounccd by the great writers whine
lives are devoted to the humanitarian effort of
muling iho people wiser, are reproduced ii the
minds of their readers; uud thus tbo gr.iudjit
results tuc accomplished.
It is especially plcu-ant for the editor and
reporter to look from without tho sphere of his
in. nn dime daily rocuiion, and glance along thu
mountains and valleys of ear good old Statu, and
tn ink of what joy and comfort the workings of
lus lirain daily tiring t.i thu unlilo people of this
Commonwealth. Not a victory, bo it of war or
politics, he records but he knows that there are
thousands ol ioval hearts who re-echo the grate
ful uinen that was S)niken in his heart when he
gave those words mi immortality ot printers' ink.
And it is doubly grateful to the editors, reporters,
and attaches of Tub Ti:li:uuai'ii to feel that in
Ibis great work of reiorin.itlon they have acted
no humble part.
In Scliuyikill and other counties last week we
