without let or hindrance. It is estimated
that in this elt v alone three thousand fraudu-

Mr. Belmo.nt attempted to do a smart
tiling In sending over the wires to every
morning newspaper in Philadelphia, as a
special despatch, a long rigmarole purporting
to be the address of the Democratic National
Committee. It was so arranged as to bo
smuggled Into print on election morning, in
the same way that the forged proclamation
was got into the New Tork papers.by deliver
. lug it to the offices here after the responitible
editors had gone borne.
The whole scheme failed of its object, the

watching; and nuletw Utey exercise much
more discretion and reticence tiun they hare
lately practised, it may be necesary to d;U
with them as traitors In fact, though they
doubtless Cutter themMvis that they are the
hlgherit and purest soit of patriots, and are
only proving their title to that cliartctor by
their incendiary denunciations of the Fedoral
Kxecutive. Mr. Otor'is D. 1'kkktioe, and
other Journalists In Kentucky, are aiding and
abetting Bkamlettk, WicKLirrK, Gorti
kie, H id omne yentts, lu their efforts to stir
up the people of that State toop?n revolt ; and
we dare say that If a provost marshal and his

press these pestilent fomenter of sedition,
they would consider theouelve cruelly dealt
with, and call on Uie wholo country to sympa
thize with them as the amiable and heroic
martyr of civil liberty, and all that sort of
tldng.
But these gentlemen forget, or do not care
to realise, that they are citizens of a Stale
whose loyalty Is much more than question
able, and a large portion of whose people are
actually in the military service of the Rebel
lion, while another portion, who remaiu
within our lines, are sa really hostile to the
national cause as if they were opposing that
cause with arms In their bands. Kentucky
has not been, since the Rolelllonbogan, either
wholly In or wholly out of the Union.
She commenced by absurdly claiming the
right to assume the attitudo of a neutral in a
civil war, in which not to be with tho legiti
mate national authority was necessarily to be
against It ; and since that extraordinary pre
tension was disallowed, aud she was forced by
the action of the honestly and wisely loyal
part of bcr people to take a stand on one or
the other side of the conflict, she has been per
petually overrun by bands of Rebel guerillas,
who have assembled and plundered those of
hor people who have remained faithful to their
"giee, and anxious, by a free exorcise of
their privilege of suffrage, to keep Kentucky
from being carried over to the enemy.
Tbe Democrats 1b that State Insist on a
free election, and yet they could not vote at
all, except in favor of secession and rebellion,
unless the National Administration employed
its military power to protect Kentucky against
Rebel raids and conquest, and to make effect
ive the votes of the truly loyal Kentuekians,
by denying to all disaffected and disloyal per

we are. perhaps, as well endowed as any

Of all the executes which prevail anion? us
to a sufficient degree to merit the app'-llati m
ol national vices, there is, we think, none so
vulgar, inexcusable, and disgusting as the
excessive use of tobacco, which prevail)
throughout the land among young and old.
We wish that some modern Jamie would
wril e a "Counterblast to Tobacco," which might
have the happy effect of putting an end to a
habit which, for a century and three-quarters,
has boon offending the olfactories, and destroy.
Ing the mental and physical energies of the
American people. It is strange that a prac
tice, opposed as tt is to all the die tutes of
nature, health, and reason, should ever become
so universal and not less strange than
melancholy.
It is sucking the heahh and energy out of
the system of our youths, whom we see about
us stunted In growth and weak in mind, and
every way unlit and unable to perform the
active duties of life in this new world, where
bodily and Intellectual vigor Is the best capi
tal with which a boy can start in life. But
this Is not the place to discuss the physical
evils which attend tbe use of tobacco. Able
scientific pens have long since exhausted the
subject, without other avail than to prove tbe
truth of the saying, that our passions are tbe
only orators that never tail to penutvid. If
nu will contluue to impair their health,
shorten their lives, and entail misery upon
their progeny, It It their own lookout, and as
they sin so wlU they sufiVr.
