RAIlASIIO..II.
The celebrated Jewish featival of the. New
Tear, called Rahaahonah, commenced on
Friday at six o'clock In the evening. On this
occasion the disciples of the ancient Church
abfttsin from all manner of toll, and give tuctn
- i! P t tto enjoyments provided in the
bounty of this world. Feasting, social plea
sure, and rejoicing will prevail as through the
Christmas holidays of the Christian community.
The ceremonies of this festival, and those
Which follow It, are curious to the mind of all
but members of the Jewish Church. Each day
horn Is blown thirty times In every syna
gogue. This horn most be taken from the
head of a wether, and is sounded in commemo
ration of the deliverance of. Isaac from the
m orifice. .
A. week after the conclusion of tbU festival
th Jew will keep the grand annual fast d;iy
when, after eating supper, they will entirely
abstain from eaUng, drinking, snufflng, and
smoking, from six o'clock on one evening to
the same hour on the following day. During
thty grand penitential period all confess to
Hoiven their sins, in the hope of mercy. Then
follow eight days of glad rejoicing, feasting,
and social delight. The tables In every house
are: loaded with good tilings. A cottage is
erected, covered with evergreens, and adorned
with the rarest flowers of the garden and tho
field. Coming from the synagogue, the roof
Of this cottage is opened, and thanks are given
to he Almighty Huler of tho Universe for His
many bounties and mercies, and II U guardian
ship over His "chosen people."
A, week alter this beautiful festival a vcrl
tlVe "Feast of BowV the Jewish holiday
aeaaoa bt brought to a close by the observance
of the day that commemorates the descent of
the Prophet Mohks from Slnal, with the Ten
Conatnandments engraved upon tho two tables
Of stone. This anniversary is celebrated by
feHt when the bent and purest wines, cakes,
and'bther dainties are sumptuously provided.
Those holidays ami observances aro not strictly
uUtrfred to by those recognlzud as the Ile-
tonned Jews, who have changed many of the
ancient forms and ceremonies, and who, Instead
oi keeping to the ancient landmark of Israel
y.;eld something to the notions of modern days.

romances of Cobbs, Dobbs, and Hobbs exclu

contains three "powerful" tales, and Lucinda,

For a whole week the anxious reader Is
Constrained to wonder what lollowod. For
a whole week she Is left In a bewllderlnj

(hat terrible moment. For a whole weMc,
though it may ruin or snow, she is expected
to iui.'iglni'thnt the moon shines while A ns

whilo iKiillng the potatoes, kneading ths

"What hoi utandt" is to ring in hor ears.

The second story "The Avenger; or, the
I'irato of tho Lonely Isle," by Dobbs tak
Lot inda's ima;luation out upon tho stormy
deep, pictures a terrific conflict between the
rrew of the "Sarah Jan" a vessel whlc'j Is
happy in having tho lovely Henrietta Fiti
drnl'ble as a passenger and the plrato crew
of the "long, low, black, rakish-looking
schooner," and just as the distracted mtlibin
has thrown herself over the bow of the "Sar.ih
June," to escape "a fate worse than death,"
and Is seleed by the tresses In time to prevent
her falling Into tho yawning waters, com ts
down tho Inevitable curtain "To be con
tinued." And now, for the next week, Lu
clnda Is to keep up her Interest in tho story
by fancying a taautlful girl hanging over tha
ravenous sea, ber auburn hair In the rough
grasp of a pirate flend. But the troubles of
the unfortunate reader do not end here.
There Is a third romance, by Ilabbs, syled
"The ratriot of the Days that Tried Mjn's
Souls;" very trying to Luctnda's soul, also, for
when ber excited imagination gets to the " To
be continued," the herolo patriot has just
blown up bis house to save it from the Inferni
redcoats, and the' reader Is left In a heart,
rending doubt as to whether any of the legs"
arms, heads, Ac, which are seen flying
through the smoke, were the property of the
devoted son of lreedom.
Now, If we endeavor to picture to ourselves
'.he state of Luclnda's mind during the suc
ceeding week, with Reginald and Anistaslaon
tho garden wall and silken ladder, and the
deep voice calling upon them to bo so absurd
as to "stand;" Miss FlUdrabble Iu a state of
suspense, by the htilr of tho head, over tho
Teaming sea; and a horrible mass of human
limbs flying through tbe smoke some of
them, perhaps, the fragments of a cherished
hero all to bo remembered, and all most ter
ribly exciting the heart of the fair reader, we
may have a taint idea of that unwritten misery
which adlicts thousands upon thousands of
young people In this ago of woe Ineffable.
