The State of Gponrlrt, In the nitianwlitli;, ap
pearl to have lost both faith and heu-t In thi
Rebellion ; and If report from that quarter Is to
be believed, her authorities and people are
anxious to get out of the scrape as speedily
M 'possible. Her proposition, however, ti
yieeda from the sece.ler.-i, and set up for her
self as an independent commonwealth. In
imply preposterous, since it request 1 the
National Qovernmunt to concede to one St-tta
right which It denies to several collectively.
The only posHlble way In which Georgia can ex
tricate herself from her complicity In the
ttetielllon is to lay down her arms uncondi
tionally, and petition to be readmitted iuto
the Volon. There is no middle course for her
to pursue, and the sooner she makes up her
mind to that, the sooner she will escape a
worse late than she bas yet sullercd.
The coils of an inevitable doom are al.o
Hut closing around Richmond. .Siikhiiian'.i
victorious army has pushed the routed and
flying force of Eari.t almost to the very
rate of tho ltobel capital, and Grant is
driviog, right and loft, over all impediments
sad opposition, smack np to the very inner
most defenses of that devoted citadel. Every
tour's news is now pregnant with motnuntous
Ridings ;jind the public hope, standing a-tlptoe
"Tor the crowning triumph of the war, expucts
who every successive aospatcu to learn that
the central stronghold of treanou has f.tllon
before the power and persistence of our arms,
and that Jefferson Davir and his Cabinet
re seeking precipitate escape from the Just
retribution due their enormous crimes.
With Richmond taken, the "Old Dominion"
will relieved from the horrible suffering and
desolation to which It has so long boen sub
feeted. as the main theatre of a strife which
was . initiated on her soil by men who ware
traitors alike to her peace and integrity, and
the peace and unity of tho nation. Woll may
her sorely alllitted people rejoice at their de
liverance. As Virginia, the mother of states
men and patriots, should have been the last
State In the Union to depart from the Federal
(bid, so should site bo the first of her "erring
sisters'' to come voluntarily back to it. .She
bad little to gam and very much to ln.- by
her participation In the Rebellion, and tho.no
who seduced bcr from her allegiance have
made ber pay dearly for her apostasy.
The war, however, may go on even after
Richmond falls. We must not flatter our
selves with the idea that the life of the llcbcl
cause is bound up in the fule of that city, and
that' the conquest of one is the conquest of
the other. But we will make no mlMaUtj in
stuming that the loss of the Confederate
capital will prove, naorully and physically, a
dial blow to the insurgents ; and th' while
hey may, in very desperation, make further
resistance to the decisive discomfiture that
must ultimately overtake them, their subse
quent efforts will be but the weak and con
rulxlve struggles of malignant pride, which
will, while it may, postpone doom which It
knows and feels is inevitable. Ileiu-e, in
rejoicing over victories won and Impending,
let us not relax our efforts, but press on with
ever-tnereafcing vigor and resolution to the
glorious consummation that awaits the na
tional cause.

momentous secret Is wrapped up in the much

that It Is only by the vigorous arm, guioeu oy

the yellow harvest of the plain gathered for

ftThere are abundant evidences In the present
state of afl'uirs in both hemispheres, tnat a
grand crisis in the history of mankind rapidly
approaches. The great commerclaljuatlons,
who have carried civilization to the highest

marvellous science and energy who have
eat their trading vessels to nearly every

come into collision with those semi-barbarous
people who have hitherto excluded theiuwerves
