The scene was on tbe south coast of Cornwall,
wbero 1 hud retired a few days before the com
mencement of the long vacation, tu seek a short
repose from the turmoil and worry of the law;
leaving behind mo the. old time-worn buildings of
Lincoln's Inn, where the, old sun-dial, with Its
quaint motto, seldom looked at, and still .sel

frail tenure by which we hold our lives ; leaving
the barristers in their gowns and wigs, hurriedly
passing from courts to consultations (or, In other

dress, and with their bundles of papers under
thi ir arms; and the ollk-e boys, with big bugs,

dently looking upon themselves as no mean part
of their respective establishment ; leaving all thisj

All that I noticed of his dress was that ho had
