?1IS At'TBOR BHHOLVF.8 TO ASSIST THE AFl'MCrF.n.
I have felt some difficult' in deciding on tin;
proper and beat course of ac'.ion. A,i one tine' 1
Uiought the editor ot the Lancet would kindly
publish n letter from me on the subject, hut
further reflection led me to doubt whether an in
ignificant individual would he noticed with nt
acme special introduction. In the Anrii number
of the Cumin U Muijazine I read with much in
tercut nn article on tbe subject dcliniti? tolera
bly well the effects, lint uirering no fnnirihlo
remedy, or even positive solution of the problem,
"What ii the cause of obesity f" I was pleased
with tbe artie'es as a whole, butobjoctod to some
portions, and bad prepared a lot:er to theeditorof
that magazine offering my experience on the sub
ject, but again it ttruck me that an unknown
Individual like myself would have but little pros
pect of notice; so I iitiully rc.-olved to publish
and circulate this pamphlet, with no other rea
son, motive, or expectation than an earnest desire
to help those who happen to be alllictcd as I was,
tor that corpulence is remediable I am woll con
vinced, and shall be delighted if I csn Induce
others to think so. The object I have in view
' 4Tf ano to enter into minute particulars, as
as gODcral observations, and to revert to by
(, iie years, in order to show that I have spared
do pains nor expense to accomplish the groat end
of stopping and curing obesity.

I have been In dock, jwrhaps, twentr times in

of the cruel and injudicious in public assembl es,

l'LUHONAL AFl'I'.AHANCK IMl'UOVLH.
My girth is reduced Mun i the waist, in tailor ;
phraseology, twcive and n quarter inches, which I
extent was hardly conceivable even by my I
friends, or by my respected medic il tnlviser,
until I put on my former clothing over what I
now wear, which was a thoroughly convincing ;
proof of the remarkable change. Thn.su import- ;
ant desiderata have been iiitiiued by tho most,
easy and comtortablo means, with but little medi
cine, and almost entirely by a system of diet that
formerly 1 should have thought dangerously :
generous. I am told by all who know me that ,
my personal appoarance is greatly improved, and j
that 1 seem to bear the stump of gold health; j
this may be a mattor of opiuiou or friendly ru- J
murk, but I t an honestly assert thitl fuel ru-
stored in health, "bodily and mentally," appear
to have more muscular power and vigor, eat and
diink with a good nppcti'e, uud sleep well. All
swnptoms of ucidity, indigestion, and heartburn
(With which I was frequently torniontod) have
vani-tied. I have left oil' using b lot-hooks, and ,
other tuch aids, which were indispensable, but !
bt ing now able to stoop with ease aud freedom,
are unnecessary. I have lost tho feeling of ore i- j
i,,)i(W 'ninfnrss, and what I think a rem irkable :
blessing mid comfort is, that I havo been able '
safely to lcuvo oil' knee bandages, which I bad 1
worn iiec,.v(ii Wy lOr 20 pad years, and given up a I
truss nlmo-t entirely ; indeed, I believe I ni ght
wholly discard it with safety, but am advised to ,
wear it ut leust occasionally for the present. '

1118 POUMF.U MHUICAL AH ISF.IIS.
Since publishing my pamphlet, I have felt con- ,
stiuined to send a copy of it to my former medical I
advlsi rs, und to ascertain their opinions on the ',
subject. 'They did not dispute or question tho
propriety of tho system, but either dined not ven- ;
lure its practice upen a man of my ago, or thought '
it too great a sacrifice of personal comfort to be j
generally advised or adopted, and I fancy neither
of tliem appeared to feel the fact of the misery of
corpulence. One eminent physician, ns 1 hefiro 1
stated, us-uied mo that increasing weight was u ,
necessary result of advancing yearB; a nother, ;
equally eminent, to whom I had been directed by
a very ftlemilv third, who bud most kindly but j
inellectuii ly i'uilcd in a remedy, added to my j
weight In ii'l'cw weeks instead of ubatiug the evil.
These facts lead mo to holievo the question Is no:
bulll' iciitly observed or even regard-id.
Tbe great charm nnd comfort of tho system Is,
that iu ellecls are palpable within a week of trial,
which creates a natural stimulus, to persevere t ir
u few weeks more, when tho laet becomes esta i
lished beyond question.
